SOMA |OT| I Have No Mouth but I Will Scream, on The Dark Descent into A Machine

Really liked it. Atmosphere was amazing, sound effects were incredible and they absolutely nailed the visuals as well. I felt like the game itself went on about a third longer than it should have (10-12 hours would have been perfect instead of near enough 20 hours), and it got a bit tiring fighting against the droids at times (even though they were really unsettling), but the stealth gameplay was excellent, the setting of Sevastopol was superb and it has just the right amount of depth.

Probably considered it an 8/10 after finishing, and in all honesty the only thing I'd change would be trimming some of the fat.

I'm playing that at the moment, and really enjoying it. Certainly one of my best surprises of the year so far, and feels like a better attempt at the Quantic Dream style of game than any QD game has managed so far!

oh nice. agree on all points here. A:I was way too long, but it had a lot of atmosphere. game could get pretty tense even whem the droids did get old. sweet. someone i can talk about scary games now.

UD is pretty great. it was like a good rollercoaster for me. and the first game mu wife asks if we can keep playing. we had like 3 hr sessions w the game. just really well done and fun.

soma so far is more interesting than good. the premise is very abundant which is great... the game itself.. hmm... needs better art direction imo. VA are growing on me.. and the gameplay i wish was more cinematic. still. interesting to keep going. ill post some more aboit my xp w the game later w some screens.

still pretty upset the game doesn't natively do downsampling.

also some minor slow downs here and there for no reason and some textures that take for ever to load in.

not a very well optimized game so far =/

edit: lol. game just crashed. hmmm....

edit:2... crash on the same place :(

crash happens after
train crashes, and i got up the ladder. use the tool to open the door.. hatch closes
and the game crashes. ugh

Can I get a quick answer from you guys whether the good reviews are deserved? I want to get it but I'm not sure whether to wait or not.

Stopping for a while, going to get some dinner. Thanks to all of you who tuned into the stream, making it officially my most watched stream ever. The thirst is very real for this. I gave been at it for nearly six hours today.

In a few hours, I will do some more, I suspect I might be quite near the end.
Right now I am bearing down on theta station.

Still a long way to go!

This quick saving or loading is pretty damn obnoxious on the PS4, takes me out of the moment every time it happens and freezes the game pretty bad.

Ugh this motherfucker in the
sunken ship
is so irritating.... Can I actually
avoid him or does he just magically patrol inches away from where I am? I brute forced my way through but I am having a really hard time avoiding these goddamn monsters and it doens't help that the screen goes insane when you look at them....

Sure some of the reviews I watched compared it to Ethan and Rapture though.

Nyehhhh. It sounds like there will be little action and no fast gameplay, but that doesnt make it like those games. The reviewers were referring to it's approach to the narrative and scenes.

Ethan carter > walk around. Solve puzzles by walking around.

Rapture > walk around. Occasionally tilt controller.

SOMA > walk around. Hide from things that can kill you. Pick up items. Use items to solve puzzles. Interact with the game world to solve puzzles.

That's only going by trailers and it's all pretty obvious.

I've never played a walking sim before, but this game is 95% walking so far and only have 3 trophies to go, so I guess I'm almost finished.
The 5% of cat and mouse gameplay is the worst part of the game

It's 29.99 and there is a plus discount as well.

Not saying it's not worth it, and I know my comment really wasn't adding anything to the conversation. I just can't drop that kind of money on something I have no ability to resell, especially after getting burned a few times, especially if it's a one and done type of experience.

I'm hoping for a demo.

Thomas Grip confirmed in June that SOMA will not have a demo. The E3 gameplay teaser from this year is the closest thing we are going to get as far as a demo is concerned.

Spoilers circa 4 hours:

It's exactly like I suspected!
He's a robot, but that isn't THE twist.... anyone paying attention should have known all along. The rabbit hole goes deeper.....

Supposedly will show up sometime in the next 6 hours.

OK, thanks. That's kind of odd, but at least it's a timeframe. I was looking last night and just now on my lunch break, but I was going crazy because I couldn't seem to find it. Should be able to download it after work and play for a few hours then tonight.

Played for another hour or so. Still very early, but the story has really, really, really sinked hooks on me! Need to take a small break to digest.

Spoilers up to little after the 2nd progress related trophy drops:
I did not see the post apocalyptic stuff coming. I did start to wonder just long it had been when I saw how much the sea urchins and whatnot had conquered parts of the facility, but the comet? Came as a full surprise. Wonder if it brought something with it..?

This is great!

10 minutes in and I'm already creeped out that the main character lives in the same city and has the same birthday as me.

I'm a few hours in and really enjoying it.

The atmosphere and sound design is so damn good.

2 hours with it, it's definitely creepy but pretty simple. Definitely seems more interested in its story than scaring me, so hopefully the story holds up.

A few people here were mentioning loading times and frame rate issues on PS4...some things I imagine wouldn't be an issue on PC (hopefully)

Loading times aren't an issue at all on PC. As for frame rate it's 60fps on my system (i7-4770/gtx 980) at 1080p with every setting on max, except at times when I assume it's loading new parts of the level. Then it gets quite stuttery, but stabilizes after some seconds.

Downloading from NA PSN.

This'll be interesting. I have never even seen gameplay of the game.

Here's what I know and ALL I know:

- Amnesia devs
- Some variant of run and hide horror game
- I saw the live action teaser a long time ago and was intrigued

That's it! Hopefully I'll get a chance to play late tonight.

Yea.. i am coming to this game with very little knowledge, and its awesome in that respect. No idea, makes it even creepier.

2 hours in. I see what Frictional meant when they were talking about the pacing. It has definitely been more creepy and unsettling than "shit in your pants" scary so far. The story is very compelling. Sound design and atmosphere is fantastic

Fix for stuttering on PC (Nvidia):

-Enable adaptive v-sync and triple buffering via control panel
-Disable threaded optimization via control panel
-Turn OFF the in-game AA and set refresh rate to the same as your monitor.

There will still be slight hiccups when loading a level but you should no longer get the "turn around quickly and plummet to 15 FPS" thing happening.

Worked for me and a few others on Steam, the game is far more enjoyable without the sudden drops.
