Something Old, Something New

What game characteristics from previous systems would you like to see implemented in today's games? What defining characteristics of classic games are 'lost' in today's games? Is it a good or bad evolution?

Bring back the simple one button controls, the simple beeps and boops, the 2 tone color pallet, game over screens and no save points. Bring back the simpler times.

pfff...whatever.

Simpler controls
Gameplay relying more on reflexes than trial and error
Better storylines
Less pandering to the mass market
More soul

When you press "start" the game starts.

a chalenging game that is just fun to play, doesn't need a big storyline, or the best graphics. Justa cool game, with nice music. the type of game where you turn it off in frustration cause you just died in the same spot for the 10th time, swear that you'll never play again, but be back on in 5 minutes.

Yeah. But that's the problem with having 17 buttons, i guess.

At least 75% of the posts so far describe Mr Driller Drill Land and Kururin Squash (GC imports) perfectly, and I'd be willing to bet that most of you haven't played either of them. Take the plunge!

I don't play those games with the funny names. Sorry.

Games were pretty soulless back in the day too. Or did we miss the days when you could trip over a video tennis/Mario/Dragon Quest/Street Fighter clone easily?

I have played and own Drill Land, and I must say it is the best game I have ever imported. It's a shame that they didn't build on Drill Land with Spirits, but Drill Land still stands as my favorite driller title. I have been playing it for hours, and I see no end. I am very interested in Kururin Squash, and will be importing that the second I have some more money.
I would have to agree with DJ when he says "Less pandering to the mass market" It has become so ridiculous. I want to go back to the good old days where figuring out how to pull off the Shoryuken was the pinnacle of gaming. Today, everything is handed to you on a silver platter. Sure there are harder games, but a lot of them miss that indescribable "old school" difficulty. This is why I love Gradius V so much. It makes me feel like I have gone back to the very early ninties, and I am sitting in the corner arcade, just blasting things to hell.

You just essentially described the arcade crash. I remember back when Donkey Kong was released, and there were about 5 other games that were exactly the same. Lack of innovation, and flooding killed the arcade.

Games built around a gameplay concept instead of a character/story concept. Stories use to be some silly attempt to explain the odd stuff going on in the game. Now we have games built around stories, and the eventual gameplay thrown in is pretty standard/generic stuff. If you want originality then you have to get out of the current philosophy of games. Katamari Damacy lends itself to the old philosophy.

Sound/Music tests. And for the music, bleeps and bloops are still okay folks. Not everything needs to be dramtically orchestrated or filled with license music.

Abstract characters/worlds you could use your imagination with. Realism can be harmful to the connection between player and character.
