The thread title really doesn't work, since Son of the Mask is the "son" of a hugely profitable movie.
The Mask only cost $18 million, even though it was a Best Visual Effects nominee, alongside True Lies and Forrest Gump. (Really only possible because it was made before Ace Ventura opened. Actors' salaries are THE reason movies have gotten so expensive.)
It pulled in $344 million at the box-office, over 19X its budget. :O Didn't do too shabby on video, either.
