It's classical music, so not many people will be familiar with it, but Robert Schumann's song "Mondnacht" (Moonlight) is my favorite. It has this haunting harmonic progression which creates a peaceful mood unlike anything else I've ever heard.

Just a small town girl, livin' in a lonely world
She took the midnight train goin' anywhere
Just a city boy, born and raised in south Detroit
He took the midnight train goin' anywhere

A singer in a smokey room
A smell of wine and cheap perfume
For a smile they can share the night
It goes on and on and on and on

Strangers waiting, up and down the boulevard
Their shadows searching in the night
Streetlight people, living just to find emotion
Hiding, somewhere in the night

Working hard to get my fill,
everybody wants a thrill
Payin' anything to roll the dice,
just one more time
Some will win, some will lose
Some were born to sing the blues
Oh, the movie never ends
It goes on and on and on and on

Don't stop believin'
Hold on to the feelin'
Streetlight people

No longer boycotting the Wolfenstein franchise
Led Zeppelin - "Stairway to Heaven"

My cousin loved Zeppelin, and we played this song while burying him after he committed suicide. I can't hear it without thinking of that day.

"Its yet to be determined
but the air is thick; and my hope is feeling warm
Im missing home, and Im glad youre not a part of this
Theres parts of me that will be missed

And the Phone is always dead to me
So I can't tell you the temperature is dropping
and it feels like...

Its colder than it aught to be in March
And I still got a day or two ahead of me, til Ill be heading home to you
Into your arms again
And the people here are asking after you
It doesnt make it easier, It doesnt make it easier
To be away
Id like to haul a plane
And see you in the morning
and when the day is fresh...im coming home again.....
"

The Beach Boys - God Only Knows

I just relate to it too closely not to feel something.

There's really nothing else. Or if there is, I've forgotten them.

Forever Autumn - Moody Blues

That's the most beautiful song. It doesn't make me well up, but if I'd lost someone at some point I'd probably be crying for days after hearing it.

I just looked it up in the New Grove... Yes, that's Schubert. It was written in 1823, about the same time as the Unfinished Symphony.

I love that song as well, some Beach Boys tunes are great depending on my mood.

On a side note, Green Grass of Tunnel by Mum is a fantastic song also, I was just listening to it.

See You Soon - Coldplay

These songs don't make me cry, no song does, but they do make me a bit emotional.

Just dropping in to say I agree with about half of Star Power's list, and I appreciate the Suede appreciation earlier in the thread. I need to listen to Dog Man Star again soon...

There are several Eels songs worth mentioning, but the one that usually gets me is "Climbing Up To The Moon.'

The only other new song I'd add to the list is "Passion" by Peter Gabriel. I'm far from religious (yeah, I know, shocking), but that whole soundtrack is incredibly moving. Even if you're not a believer, hearing the moment of Christ's crucifixion and calling out to heaven transformed into music is nerve-rattling.

The Intermezzo from the Cavalleria Rusticana, Confutatis from Mozart's Requiem, many pieces from Handel's Messiah, the Sull' Aria from Le Nozze di Figaro (if it's done right), Adagio in G minor for strings and organ by Tomaso Albinoni come to mind immediately.

The only one I can think of is Space Oddity by David Bowie.

Doesn't make me cry, though, it just comes closer than anything else I can think of.

It's been mentioned before, but for me, it's U2's One. What a great song. The song has made even more impact on me due to some personal circumstances as well.
