Minn. Trooper Writes 205 Mph Ticket

WABASHA, Minn. - With a State Patrol airplane overhead, a motorcyclist hit the throttle and possibly set the informal record for the fastest speeding ticket in Minnesota history: 205 mph.

On Saturday afternoon, State Patrol pilot Al Loney was flying near Wabasha, in southeastern Minnesota on the Wisconsin border, watching two motorcyclists racing along U.S. Highway 61.

When one of the riders shot forward, Loney was ready with his stopwatch. He clicked it once when the motorcycle reached a white marker on the road and again a quarter-mile later. The watch read 4.39 seconds, which Loney calculated to be 205 mph.

"I was in total disbelief," Loney told the St. Paul Pioneer Press for Tuesday's editions. "I had to double-check my watch because in 27 years I'd never seen anything move that fast."

Several law enforcement sources told the newspaper that, although no official records are kept, it was probably the fastest ticket ever written in the state.

After about three-quarters of a mile, the biker slowed to about 100 mph and let the other cycle catch up. By then Loney had radioed ahead to another state trooper, who pulled the two over soon afterward.

The State Patrol officer arrested the faster rider, 20-year-old Stillwater resident Samuel Armstrong Tilley, for reckless driving, driving without a motorcycle license — and driving 140 miles per hour over the posted speed limit of 65 mph.

A search of speeding tickets written by state troopers, who patrol most of the state's highways, between 1990 and February 2004 shows the next fastest ticket was for 150 mph in 1994 in Lake of the Woods County.

Tilley did not return calls from the newspaper to his home Monday. A working number for him could not immediately be found by The Associated Press on Tuesday.

Only a handful of exotic sports cars can reach 200 mph, but many high-performance motorcycles can top 175 mph. With minor modifications, they can hit 200 mph. Tilley was riding a Honda 1000, Loney said.

Kathy Swanson of the state Office of Traffic Safety said unless Tilley was wearing the kind of protective gear professional motorcycle racers wear, he was courting death at 200 mph.

"I'm not entirely sure what would happen if you crashed at 200 miles per hour," Swanson said. "But it wouldn't be pretty, that's for sure."

That's pretty bad ass. Anyone ever see the in-car video of a Ferrari F40 flooring it on a highway? Not sure what speeds that car reached, but I imagine it was over 180mph. He got ticketed after a cop got a hold of the video after it was distributed. :lol

On a related note, there's another legendary video involving a Ferrari 275 GTB called Rendezvous, showing a guy flooring it through the streets of Paris for ten minutes while the camera is mounted on the nose. It's one of the most incredible things I've ever seen. I grabbed it off Kazaa about a year ago, and it's worth the download.

what's that movie coming out about the attempt to cross the US in less than a day?

I don't know. I'm pretty sure I know what would happen if you crashed a MOTORCYCLE at 200 mph.

I think it would be pretty, like a Pollack painting.

You guys got me looking for this Rendezvous video and it's hard to find. I found a link to it from the BBC here , but I can't get the video to work. I'm about to go to the living room to try and get it up on the PC. :D The audio is working and it sounds like he's WOT most of the way. Damn, must be something to see. :D And there was that video from a while back of that dude doing like 160-180 on a highway. He used to post on ITV's F1 forums and said his speedo was inaccurate at the high end, but he was still flying. He power-wheelied from like 60-120mph. :lol Bikes fucking rule! :D PEACE.

Rendezvous is simply unbelieveable. There are two types of people those that have seen it and those who haven't.

:lol It really is true though...if you have even the slightest interest in exotic cars, racing, skilled driving or just sheer speed, it's something you just have to see. There are several moments where if he broke even a half second later, he would've killed himself or someone else. It's one of the stupidest, most reckless things I've ever witnessed...and yet I marveled at the beauty of such a magical drive when it's over.

BTW, the drive was done at dusk, so there were relatively few cars on the road, enabling him to reach ridiculous speeds (plus the dusk sky makes it look that much cooler). I actually saw a DVD for this on sale (there's apparantely several of varying quality) at the auto show, but they were charging 30 bucks which was a bit too rich for my blood at the time. Might get it next time around though...would love to see it full screen.

Here's a link to a small teaser.

Heh, makes me wonder if this is where OutRun got it's inspiration from. :lol

Anyone have the link to that bike-freeway clip where he blows out a pursuing smoky? Reckless, dangerous, bad yadda yadda but holy shit was it tight. I had it on my comp but I must have deleted it.

Haha, I did find stark_winslow.wmv and manugamewinner.wmv, which are always worth another look, as is that clip are of Zlatan's goal against NAC. And the motegibattle.wmv (supercars in Japan go at on the track, Lambo's eventually overpower everyone) is great.

Damn, GAF needs to set up a DC hub or something so we can all swap those cool little clips. I'd love to have those hilarious Home Shopping bloopers (ladder guy = rofl, but samurai sword demonstrater = ROFL), or that awesome one of the local newscaster who got startled doing that zookeeper interview. :D

Oh for pure speed I'm sure there are plenty of vids that beat it, but the ridiculous level of danger is what makes this video. The number of close calls in the movie is insane...and he comes so close in a couple of spots, you wonder if it wasn't all setup. Yet that obviously wasn't the case.

Having said all that, I'll have to grab this Getaway video sometime.
