Sonic CD Developer Diary, game comes out Dec 14th for $5/400MSP

Probably going to pick this up I overloaded on points from a half off sale (got 9800) after getting free ones from that post on gaf to lol.

No OT for this being put together at the last minute? Seems like a fair few are getting it, so would be worth it.

Yeah is there an OT thread that I can't find, or is this thread pretty much it?

Anyways Sonic CD at 60fps, will be the best Sonic CD. The slowdown on the Sega CD version really annoyed me when I recently replayed it.

No OT (yet? Is anyone making one?) considering the release date was just announced today! :lol

5 DOLLARS

WHAT THE FUCK

I AM FLIPPING OUT

WHO IS IN CHARGE OF THIS RELEASE AT SEGA AND WHERE THE FUCK HAS HE BEEN THE PAST FEW YEARS

Probably for the best. It doesn't seem like anyone's working on an OT, or at least, they haven't expressed interest in one even when the question was raised previously. I would've done it but my skills in GIMP are pretty bad...

this will be my faster BUY ever.

as for SegaCD games, I'd also love to see:

Ecco The Dolphin
Hook
Lunar The Silver Star
Earthworm Jim

brought to LIVE as well. the SegaCD versions of those 3 games offered musical scores wonderfully superior to their SNES/Genesis cousins.

It seems like we've been making Sonic OT names a lot lately, lol.

Sonic CD (Retro Engine) |OT| Yo dawg, SEGA Heard You Like Sonic
|OT| Sonic Generations wasn't enough
|OT| The Original Sonic Time Traveling Adventure

Again, people are going to come up with joke titles anyway.

I can whip one up tomorrow morning if no one else is working on it right now.

Yes please. A rerelease of this quality deserves one. Kinda a personal request, but could you put together a decent Sonic CD banner too?

EDIT: Whoa anyone see the free EU Stardust Speedway PSN theme?

Anyone have the file for it?

Sonic CD (Retro Engine) |OT| Taxman did the CD without a C&D
Yes! Looks like I'll be getting this on XBLA, iOS, Android and maybe PC. Damn, at that price, how could you not double/triple/quadruple dip? Man, if Taxman and Sega remade Sonic 3 & Knuckles using the Retro Engine....

Sonic CD's redeeming qualities include its music (Japan/PAL...US version is bitchmade) and the fact that it's 2D. The vertical-ish level design is horrid and makes me think the devs just randomly placed pre-assembled pieces until they kinda/ sorta had something that was "playable". There's no logic to it. For years I was told how brilliant this game was...and then I played it myself. The praise it gets is unwarranted. It's by no means terrible, but it ain't amazing. It' alright.

*runs...*

you mean you have stages in which you actually have to routinely stop and platform? oh the humanity.

As someone who grew up with Nintendo consoles and hasn't really played any Sonic games, is this a game that requires a decent D-Pad? Is the analog stick a viable option? Trying to decide which console version to purchase.

No, I totally love holding right to win :P

But seriously, what made things even worse was the art interfered with functionality. The BG constantly blends in with the foreground. I can't tell what I'm supposed to be jumping on and where to go.

Change of pace is good. Slow, methodical platforming is fine, but as long as where I'm supposed to go has some thought behind it, and doesn't look like someone got drunk while using a level editing program.

I still got GEMS they should of port that with the other 2 games Sonic CD is fun but really short (20-30 minutes)

Nah, the version in Gems Collection is based on the awful PC version, where as this is basically a re-do of the entire engine from scratch, with some very nice extras. Plus choice between the two OSTs! You didn't have that in GEMS! ^_-

there's usually always some trick in the level architecture by the past/future signs that lets you maintain the speed to go back/forward in time. considering the amount of signposts, id say that the level design is a little bit better than "random". the levels are more vertical so you don't just rush through getting bad futures

ok so what the hell is a Retro Engine

It's basically a fanmade engine designed around reverse engineering the original mechanics and physics of the Sonic games as accurately as possible. It's a total recreation of the original Genesis/CD Sonic engines, all combined together, with modern portability and functionality.

So for example, Sonic CD isn't by nature a widescreen game. If you emulated a Sega CD copy of the game, you would be limited by the original game's programming for the most part, so there's no way to display it with true 16:9. You'd either have to stretch, crop, or border the existing image. Recreated in this engine, you'll see a true 16:9 view of the game as you play it. It also becomes much easier to add features like swappable soundtracks, playable Tails (it's already in the code in the engine, he's already set up to handle the levels just like he would in something like Sonic 2 or Sonic 3), the Sonic 2-style Spin Dash, etc.

I just realized we're going to see Mini-Tails when that laser hits him.

Sonic CD (Retro Engine) lOTl Where We're Going, We Don't Need Backbone
I vote for this one, Backbone's emulation work was easily the lowlight of Generations. It's amazing all these years later they still can't get Sonic 1 right.
