For the re-release of Sonic CD (which isn't just a quick port and has new features) SEGA released a developer diary of the game with the art director, Kazuyuki Hoshino showing a sketchbook with concept art of the game: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JEZkrXaBkl0

Also, Major Nelson has confirmed that the game will be out on XBLA tommorow for 400 points: http://majornelson.com/2011/12/13/coming-soon-to-the-xbox-live-marketplace-dec-13/

Press release:
SEGA Europe Ltd. and SEGA of America, Inc. today announced that fan favourite Sonic CD will be released on multiple platforms from tomorrow. Relive the story of the 1993 original, which sees Dr. Eggman again, attempting to take control of time by stealing the Time Stones from Little Planet. Sonic must speed through levels and travel through time whilst fending off Eggman’s robots to recover the Time Stones and save the smitten young hedgehog, Amy Rose.

The revamped version Sonic CD will include the original Japanese and US soundtracks as requested by the fans, and, for the first time, the ability to play the game as Sonic’s best friend Tails, unlockable by clearing the game for the first time. Sonic CD also features the first appearance of Metal Sonic, one of Sonic’s most enduring nemesis.

“Sonic’s 20th Anniversary has been a banner year for him – as well as for everyone at SEGA,” said Haruki Satomi, Senior Vice President of Digital Business at SEGA of America. “Gamers around the world are rediscovering their love of Sonic through his adventures, new and old. Whether you’re a long-time hedgehog aficionado looking to enjoy a favourite moment from Sonic’s past, or a brand-new player who wants to join in on the fun, there’s no better place to start than with one of Sonic’s most celebrated games, Sonic CD.”

Sonic CD will be available tomorrow from Xbox LIVE Arcade for the Xbox 360, priced at 400 Microsoft Points, the PlayStation Network in Europe for $5.00/£3.59/€4.49 /AUD$6.25 and iPhone, iPod touch, iPad for $4.99/AUD$5.49/Euro $3.99/UK £2.99. Sonic CD will be released on the PlayStation Network in America on 20th December and for Android and Windows Phone 7 devices in the New Year. Electronic Theatre will keep you updated with all the latest details on Sonic CD.

Very cool developer diary video. I'd love to see more of these Sega (and less of Iizuka!) I am downloading Sonic CD first thing tomorrow.

This isn't emulated so it wouldn't mean anything for new Sega CD games. If anything, they'd put it on Wiiware. But they won't.
Doesn't mean that can't just put the pure Sega CD version up. I want my Shining Force CD dammit. And the good versions of Lunar.

They already ruled out VC/WW due to size constraints.
TG16 CD games are on VC. Sonic CD won't be any larger than those.

Whoa, with all the work going into it I was hoping it wouldn't be a 1200 point title, but 400 is awesome. Never played through Sonic CD either, so I'm getting this minute 1.

Looks like they fixed the water effects at least; were there any other major issues that people were complaining about before I blindly double dip on this? :lol

i'd imagine the new engine also eliminates the slowdown that plagues the original.

It does, which is especially great for the special stages. It also has both soundtracks and the new version is made by someone from the Sonic community.

Wow, totally thought they were going to charge 800 points seeing as how much more work went into this than the other XBLA ports. Day one for sure.

Man, I thought seeing the date was a result of being half-asleep, but that's a damn fine price there.

Enjoy the game, Europe; I'll enjoy it when it's out in a week in NA, I guess? Who's making the OT, or is there even going to be an OT?

I'm pleasantly surprised by the cheap price, I think I have enough leftover money from previous PSN purchases, ahhh nothing beats buying a download game with months old leftovers!
