Sonic Heroes: Worth $20?

I love Sonic games, so naturally I will want to get the latest one. I didn't wanna pay $50, but $20 seems reasonable. Is it as bad as everyone says, or did Sonic Heroes fall victim to "bedroom critics" as Trent Reznor says?

I'm not sure who says its a bad game, but its definitely worth 20 bucks.

It's the best of the 3D Sonics, unless you think you'll miss the exploration elements of the last two.

I liked SA 1 and 2, and the videos I've seen of Heroes seems to be more of the same, albiet with the extra character switching options. What makes it so much worse that the SA series? Is it the level design? Frame rate issues?

Thanks. And I won't miss exploration aspects of the past two, Sonic is a game strictly meant to be fun.

This is what I want to know.

Awesome trailer here

Nah, level design is adequate, frame-rate is good.

I think a lot of people have issues with the difficulty. Many times if you're not careful, you might end up falling into a pit and dying. Also, switching between the different characters adds a very slight strategy element to the game, that many long-time Sonic gamers may not be accustomed to. Usually a sign will appear that tells you which character to switch to, so it's not hard to figure out.

Heroes is basically more of the same. If you enjoyed the Sonic and Shadow segments of Sonic Adventure 2, then you'll probably enjoy this.

I bought it at launch and liked it. Generally, if you liked the Sonic parts of SA2 and the entirety of Sonic 3 and Knuckles you'll like it, since that's what 95% of the game is like (sans character switching, which takes all of ten seconds to get used to.) People report that there are massive bugs in the game but I played through the whole damn thing without clipping through the stage or getting hit by invisible enemies or what have you so I have doubts to their validity

Sweet, when is it coming out?
Thanks for the advice so far, seems like more people like it than I originally thought.

Shadow is coming out at the end of the year (no specifics given.) I've been reading other forums now that all of the "OMG A GUN SEGA SUX" crap has subsided a bit, and there are reports that the guns are optional weapons and Shadow fights like he does in Heroes, except he has extra powers now

Wasn't the PS2 version notably worse in execution than the GCN or Xbox incarnations? I've heard it mumbled that Renderware doesn't run all that hot on a PS2, occasionaly.

Sonic Heroes is worth about $0.20.

I loved both Sonic Adventure games, and Sonic Heroes is just a horribly, horribly done 3D Sonic. Everything about it is forgettable, and it isn't nearly as fun to play.

Sonic Heroes is to the 3D Sonic games as Sonic 3D Blast is to the Genesis Sonic games.

I only own the Cube version (which has no Japanese voices if that sort of thing bugs you), but I've seen pics where the PS2 version is noticably worse in visual quality than the other two versions (noted with water quality and jaggies and etc.) The Xbox version is probably the best total package

If you liked the Sonic Adventure games then definately pick up Sonic Heroes for $20.
It's probably worth it just for the pinball stage and the classic forest themed platforming stage. It felt like they were trying to take the series back to its roots. Imo, it was a tad simplistic compared to, say, Ratchet and Clank. And, it didn't have the scale of the first Sonic Adventure. However, truth be told, most of the stage designs were markedly evolved from prior 3d Sonics.
In fact I'd say the stage designs were quite the highlight. Rather, it was the simplistic action and at times tiresome character switching that maybe brings it down, that and the rather sub par "boss" fights. I personally didn't mind the camera; it's still of the auto recenter by pressing shoulder button variety, which innately confuses some people.
I did think, though, that for all its Sonic style and flair it lacked a little polish in the graphics dept.
Get either the xbox or Cube version.

Trust me-don't ask gaming opinions on this board. There are agendas everywhere. Just play it yourself and you'll be better off.

ALWAYS be on the watch. ALWAYS. They can get you at any time!

DO NOT BUY THE PS2 VERSION!

I played throught he GC version and loved it. Other that the story, the rest is great, and the haters just suck at it :P

But after playing the PS2 demo I felt like throwing up. Framerate is a piece of shit, and makes the whole game almost unplayable.

This guy speaks the truth. If you enjoy Sonic then it will be worth it but everyone else should probably stay away.

I think it feels more like a Sonic game than either of the Sonic Adventures. That said, it's borderline bad. The camera's pretty masochistic. It also loses points for featuring all 300 lame Sonic characters that nobody cares about. I remember the level design being kind of bland, too.

Skip it. Wait for Shadow.

Voting no. Sonic is dead.
The hedgehog responsible in the slaying is still on the loose. He is armed and dangerous... and cool.

Exactly my problem. I have other games I'd rather play, even though I've been dying to play it. I'd probably be better off renting it, just like the starter of this thread.

I think its definitely worth a playthru once, not with all the teams, but just once. You probably won't go back to it once its over. Its an important piece of Sonic's history, actually reminded me more of what Sega tried to do with Sonic Crackers / Knuckles Chaotix. So yah, I'd pick it up for $20, finish it, then use it as a trade in when there's a bonus deal going on.

"Sonic Crackers" :lol :lol :lol

If stages were influenced by previous Sonic games, you can bet I'll be buying this.

You are like a king of smartass remarks (and I mean this in a good, non-offensive way). :D

I noticed Sonic Heroes is included in a Best Buy 2 for $25 deal this week. I've played the GC and PC demos of the game and it feels and looks like a 3D version of the Genesis Sonic games. I'm sure it has it's fair share of negative qualities, but whatever. I like being able to play as a bunch of different characters, too. At least with SH they all play nearly alike.

Haha, looks like we can still edit posts, even if we can't make new posts.

I loved Sonic when you only played as Sonic - Too many supporting characters drowns out these new 3D Sonic games.

in Sonic Adventure 2, I clocked more hours of Treasure Hunting gameplay then actual Sonic/Shadow gameplay

and we know that Sonic fans really want more Sonic gameplay and less "Treasure Hunting" poop

as for Sonic Heroes, the rush rush action is fun, but the constraints of switching between characters forces apon you the unwelcomed characters...

I want the next Sonic game to be only Sonic,,, no supporting playable characters :P

Clocking more time in the hunting stages than any other in SA2 is impossible since you're Sonic/Shadow for at least 10 levels, which is more than any other character.

Plus Sonic fans pretty much got what they wanted with Heroes, since most of the game is running/platforming, just like the old ones (unless you want to count the Chaotix's "find X amount of things placed right in front of your face" stages as kowtowing to those who liked hunting, which is a stretch.) Besides, the only game in the series proper where you're Sonic only is the first one (and the second one if you choose to, but it makes the game harder), so you might as well play that one only if you think that Sega's going to throw away a part of the gameplay that has been a staple of the series

yes. as i say whenever the topic comes up, it's the best 3d sonic game by some distance. i can understand people who dislike all the 3d sonic games, or dislike sonic generally. but i can't imagine why anyone would prefer the sonic adventure games. some of its vocal detractors are just noisily disaffected sega fans, whose personal psychodramas are exactly as relevant as matt casamasssasamasama's. and then some of them are just dedicated followers of consensus. "bedroom critics" sounds the right note. but nine inch nails still suck.

i can't manage that much contempt for the new shadow game -- maybe because i was beaten to it by people i don't like agreeing with -- but a "dark" sonic game is so fundamentally wrong. half the point of sonic is bright colors.

Thanks for the suggestions, everyone. I'll be picking it up soon... and no, it won't be the PS2 version. :D I downloaded the PC demo. The game is fun, but Sonic with a Keyboard/Mouse really really blows.
