Sonic Riders video

Looks suprisingly fun! The graphics engine looks rather similar to that of F-Zero GX as well (almost as if it is, in fact, using it).

Uh, are there any corners in this game? It looked like a drag race or something. :lol

The course look way too linear, they should have ripped off some course design ideas from SSX.

I seem to lately have developed a distaste for Japanese games. I dont know if its the Jpop or what. Many of the new upcoming and ones I have played recently seem way too simplistic and played out. I once was a huge fan of Japanese games when I was younger but now I am having a hardtime thinking of any Japanese game that I am looking forward to.

This Sonic Riders video looks awefully bland when I know a few years ago I would have been wowed. Maturing tastes I guess.

I'm sure someone out there cares

Changing tastes, perhaps. 'Maturing tastes' implies that Japanese games are something inherently childish that people grow out of as they get older, which I'd have to disagree with. :)

Looks pointless and uninspired to me. Why put them on hover boards and have tricks? I'd rather see them try new stuff with foot racing, a la Sonic R, but good this time. You know, a platformer-racer where you can jump, use springs, avoid spikes, spin dash, all that Sonic-y stuff. If Sonic is fast, why is he riding a board in a race, anyway? And the futuristic style seems like a generic F-Zero GX. I don't like it at all.

That does look like SSX meets GX, but yeah.. a little bland. Hopefully it just turns out fun and has the same ammount of replay GX did..

Looked pretty lame, the courses appear to be very bland.
Also, giving sonic a hoverboard to go fast is like giving mario a pogostick to jump.

Well said!

Remember that one DC game that came out near launch? Those guys on the hoverboard and it was a racing game too? Forgot the name...it was from Acclaim or Activision...I think.

Anyways...it's hard to be a Sonic fan nowadays...

Well, it's almost like snowboarding. You can't expect snowboarders to handle sharp turns and stuff. That doesn't stop games of that genre from being fun though.

And although it looks like F-Zero GX, I'm sure it doesn't play like it for exactly the above reason. F-Zero GX's beauty is in its control, which is amazingly responsive and many times includes sharp corners and the like.

Sonic has been on surf boards before in his regular games, so that's not so bad to me. I do kind of wish they'd make a true platformer racer though. The 3D Sonics have only had a few good "speedway" tracks and almost everyone loves them...why not base a game entirely around that and eliminate all the "slow" platforming to turn it into a racer.

This still looks cool in an F-Zero sorta way though

I think Sonic Riders looks fun. Well it can't be any worse than Sonic R.

Trickstyle kicked ass. I played the hell out of that game.. Japan lvl 5 is embedded in my memory forever. I hope Sonic Riders is somewhat similar to it.

TrickStyle!

Compare the voice acting of the Japanese video to the English one, the tone of voice for the new character isn't even close.

Yeah, TS was very fun (a Criterion game too!)

The DC version had some SERIOUS framerate problems, though, but I still enjoyed it.

Yeah OK, you ride on a board at high speeds, like in SSX...but I think it will be more F-Zero than SSX....since I doubt there will be many tricks you can perform...more focus on racing.

Have you ever played a Sonic game? There is at least 1 extreme boarding level in like 90% of the Sonic games ever made. The only retarded thing is that there hasn't been a Sonic snowboarding game yet.

Looks like they either took the art assets from Sonic Heroes and stuck them in the F-Zero engine (good), or they borrowed stuff from F-Zero and put it in the Sonic Heroes engine (bad).

I hope it's the former.

This game has a Steep Slope Sliders vibe to it!

SSS was an awesome game with a great sountrack that emphaised the extreme tracks but also the mellowness when riding at sunset. You could race on almost pitch black courses if the time was right - it was all controlled by the Saturn's internal clock.

I enjoyed Sonic R on Gems Collection (unlocked everything).

This looks....

...*sigh* fun

I only remember the annoying snowboarding level from Sonic 3, and it makes sense for a snow level. Snow isn't something you run through. This is a racing game, a Sonic one, entirely on hoverboards. The only thing about it that relates to the Sonic licence is the speed, and they're not even running. Is Sonic Team now making cash-ins? 'Cause there seems to be no desire for quality left.

Speed must always equal running?

And that bit in the Ice Cap Zone is, like, 15 seconds long, and you don't even have to do anything. How can you be annoyed by it?
