This is a great release, well worth the money. One of the greatest alt. rock/indie albums you will ever hear. Want something new, gaffers? Give this a listen.

All of the tracks are remastered:

Top: Dirty Boots, original
Bottom: Dirty Boots, remastered

Plus everything sounds better. The beginning of Cindarella's Big Score sounds a lot better... there's a lot of things in Disappearer that I didn't notice before. Everything sounds much more clear and open.
In addition to this, there's a bunch of demos that are kind of interesting to hear, especially if you are already familiar with the album.

It came out on the 13th so I'm sure some other SY fans may have it.
In either case, Goo is Goo. A great album that deserves some recognition.
Check it out if you haven't.

When it first came out I thought Goo was pretty lousy, but it's grown on me quite well in the years since. But a remastered edition? I dunno.

I wish they wouldn't pump the volume so much, though. I have a perfectly good volume knob on my stereo, and it looks like they clip the loud portions a bit in the middle. Not that I could tell, I just hate the louder=better attitude with so many modern discs.

I noticed that with the remaster of Iggy Pop's Raw Power. Couldn't say I was all that impressed. Still, nice to see Sonic Youth getting the retrospective treatment -- I'm a big fan of the Slanted and Enchanted and London Calling re-issues.

This was definitely given the louder treatment, but not the BLARING LOUD, clipping treatment.
Plus it's not like overflowing with sound.

You want that?

Kaiser Chief's "I Predict a Riot"
Even the beginning where it's not even that loud is made as loud as possible :lol

It seems to be an acceptable volume to still have dynamic and all of that... it's not like the latest Rush CD, or Zwan, or Chili Peppers stuff that has clipping all over the place.

i can't stand the london calling remaster. sounds worse than the old cd. though maybe i'm just overfamiliar with the old cd and dislike the new one cos it's new. i'd be interested in a comparison to the vinyl.

The remastered Remain in Light that's coming out later this year will be the remaster to end all remasters. Gawd, I can't wait. :D

Diablos-- good to hear it isn't full of clipping.

I just put on Goo (old version, ripped to my iPod) inspired by this thread. It's been ages since I listened to it, I forgot how good it was. I noticed the remaster at my comics shop (where the clearks have excellent musical taste) last night but forgot about it again until this thread.

A remastered Daydream Nation would be really nice too.

It's already been announced. 2007, I'd wager.

Much like I do with Dirty, I'm going to keep both versions on my iPod. I prefer the unremastered version of Dirty, and I like Goo's distinctive production. I really can't wait to see what they do with DN.

Goddamn right. The whole benefit of CDs was the wide dynamic range they could support. Modern mastering techniques seem to only use 30% of it. It's been getting worse since the end of the century.

One of my favorite Sonic Youth albums. I've been wanting to pick Goo up again since it was stolen from me a few years ago. I guess it's a good thing I waited so long if this is a nice remaster.

Thanks a million for the info.

For some reason Goo always reminds me of the taste of Crystal Pepsi because I was drinking a lot of it when I first got it :D

Disappearer was an awesome song, and it would be nice to hear it in more detail but aside from that it's probably not worth springing more money on.

I've just started ripping in preparation of an mp3 player. What do you use?
CDex 1.60++
http://www.rarewares.org/files/others/cdex_160b1_cs1.exe
This uses the LAME 3.97 Alpha 1 encoder, which is not final.
So after installing CDex, what you need to do is download the LAME 3.96.1 DLL from here: http://www.rarewares.org/dancer/dancer.php?f=2

Unzip lame_enc.dll into the main directory of CDex. When it asks you to overwrite press yes.

After that, configure the encoder (by going to options > settings), select the encoder tab, select LAME (should say version 1.32, engine 3.96). Next to "quality" there will be a dropdown... select --alt-preset-standard.

2007?? So that's what Billy Corgan was talking about over 10 years ago... the Daydream Nation remastered edition!! ;)

But seriously, that's a long time. Why not just release the three of them at the same time, or at least, much closer together, dammit. Dirty came out a couple of years ago... the remastered edition that is.

I don't know what else you'd be expecting for Daydream Nation. Same type of remastering, and of course some demos/b-sides/whatever. Unless you know something I don't.

I'll admit, most of Kim Gordon's stuff is... weird. But regardless I love Sonic Youth and what they have accomplished. Yeah, they have lots of messed up, hard to listen to songs, but they're so out of the ordinary. There's not one other band like them and I doubt there ever will be. Nobody can COPY Sonic Youth. There's an attitude and approach that goes along with the music that you can't just rip off. It's really kind of scary. I would love to see them live someday.

I'll never forget this REM concert I went to back in the day when Sonic Youth was opening for them. A bunch of people in the audience just came for REM, a lot of them younger folks who had no idea what Sonic Youth was. They were probably expecting something quieter :D

They got OWNED. Sonic Youth took the stage, and instantly went into full volume full noise thrash mode. The look of horror on those peoples' faces was priceless as they covered their ears in a sad attempt to avoid the audio bludgeoning they were about to be destroyed with. I just laughed and laughed; behold the glory of Sonic Youth! You can't handle the truth!

Good lord that sounds amazing.

Dirty reissue was 2003. Sonic Nurse was 2004. Goo reissue was 2005. New album next year. Daydream Nation reissue the year after that.

Aside from the remasterin', I expect DN to include the long out of print (and awesome) Master Dik 12". There aren't many studio bootlegs from the DN days. I'm interested to see what's in the vaults.

I wish they'd do a reissue of Washing Machine. There're a shitload of unreleased studio cuts and demos for that albums, along with the original cut, which has never been available. The label screwed with that record a lot before release.

Washing Machine is kind of meh. Of course The Diamond Sea is one of the band's best tracks... top 5 I'd say (ironic is it not)? But most of that album is very "meh" to me.

Songs like "Little Trouble Girl" are just overdone in Kim's weird emotional expression. I respect Kim Gordon as a female indie rocker girl, but you've gotta admit... as much as I try to "get" some of her rambling most of her songs are just really really strange. :D

New Sonic album next year, can't wait! Why not release it and the Daydream Nation remastered edition? Must be the label or a money issue.
