Sony doubles Apr - Jun sales in 2008

A PS3 price cut is very likely if the momentum is kept up. They can just make up the potential profit by volume.

Then again, we are seeing the $399 core coming out soon, but that's not a real price cut (more like SKU shuffling).

$299 this Christmas, believe.

Hardware: Using old-method data, PS2's first quarter, where it was available in Japan for a month. PS1's shipment that quarter: 1.1 million. PS2's shipment that quarter: 1.41 million.

Software: PS2's sixth quarter, ending September 2001. PS1's shipments that quarter: 19 million. PS2's shipments that quarter: 22.7 million.

Thanks for the data. So the ps3 is doing similar in America instead of Japan?

I think the most likely scenario will be some discount or Blu-Ray coupon type deal for any remaining 40Gb PS3 units still around.

Less likely would be continuing to produce the MGS4 80Gb PS3s .. or start a new bundle in the fall ... with LBP or something.

For reals? Informed guess or belief?? Actually, you don't have to answer. Conjecture is the scourge of forums! ;-)

Cos, y'know, $299 would = around £150...

Sorry, I'll stop being stupid. We all know what $299 would equal. It'd equal lots more units shifting. I should be an analyst.

$299? Not happening :)

Who knows, maybe, just maybe, if they're profitable during next quarter too then they could afford to cut the price by 50$ in late October or November. That wouldn't hurt profitability considering that Sony was profitable during the October-December period last year too with a fresh 200$ price cut, actually most of the losses were recorded during the first half of the fiscal year.
But at the same time production has to be scheduled according to forecasts so who knows.

$299?! Man some of you are cheap, this thing is a bluray play, has wifi, and is super reliable and you want it for $299?! $400 is a solid price for this machine. Come on man!

Remember the profitability is from the gaming division (I think?) so that's hardware and software. Of course with more installed hardware they can only shift more software unless the world goes crazy.

I'm sure someone's already pointed this out.

Being that I am a noob at this, is it safe to say there is a possibility the PS3 can catch up to the X360 soon, in regards to WW sales?

Over what period? The life of the console/this generation? If you are saying that it is unlikely that the PS3 itself will never turn a profit then = :lol

There is a very good chance that neither HD system will turn a profit when measured over the length of their entire lifespan, from R&D through to retirement.

Don't blame me he didn't even list it as playing games. :D

I thought he was trying to make fun of BC in the present SKUs since it is "missing".

There is no question that if the PS3 continues to outsell the Xbox 360 , or even ties it month per month in the US, it will close the gap and eventually surpass it worldwide thanks to Japan where the Xbox 360 is non existent and Europe where the PS3 has already caught up to the Xbox 360 even with its 1 year and 3 months head start.

My guess is that if the current trend stays the same, the PS3 may catch up to the Xbox 360 by the end of 2010 at the latest.

However, the sooner Sony gets its shit together in Japan like it did with the PSP, the shorter the time it will take to surpass the Xbox 360. It all depends of how well Sony takes advantage of the release of Final Fantasy 13. A $299 redesign PS3 slim bundled with FF13 that has backward compatibility ( via software or hardware) would do wonders for the PS3 sales in Japan. Of course, this assuming FF13 launches in Japan Q4 2009.

I;d never assume FFXIII to be launching in '09 in any region given that the guys making it said they are only now ready to begin production after just finishing the story.

As for PS3 vs 360, it'll be interesting after this month is over to see what sort of trends we see in US sales from here on out between the 2 machines. Last month's Metal Gear bump for pS3 and this month's inevitable bump from the 20gig 360 phase-out sale have kinda skewed things for a 2 month block, making it hard to tell if in a "normal" month the two consoles are still chasing each other at an almost identical sales rate or if either is set to gain some distance in monthly unit sales going into the big season.

Wishful thinking. To get it down to that magical PS2 launch price (lol)
I'd love it just to stop hearing the comments of "The PS3 is so expensive!"

We'll probably have a better feel after the DKSigma event this weekend, along with all the corresponding interviews and media coverage.

Everybody? Microsoft's EDD posted a 188M$ loss in the quarter that just ended.
http://biz.yahoo.com/prnews/080717/aqth524.html?.v=16

They also just posted nearly a half a billion profit for the division the last fiscal year. Sony on the other hand was a loss of about 1 billion. The $50 million is a very good thing, but even they say they are not sure if they can turn around the ~3 billion loss they have sunk into the division in the last two years. Hopefully they can turn it around for good.

On the question of price drop I do not think one is going to happen this year. A holiday pack-in is more probable imo.

If you like going back in time, you'd know that just one quarter prior to that profitable fiscal year, they slipped another billion dollars of loss into a quarter that was already beyond saving to begin with, as we all know to cover for "future expenses" related to the RRoD and the warranty extension. IOW a billion dollar cost incurred at least in part by consoles sold later, during that nominally profitable fiscal year.

Now, after three quarters in the black, Microsoft's ability to turn a profit in EDD has again somehow vanished. Connect the dots.

I'm well aware of the year before nothing to connect. RRoD at a billion cost them big time and that money was put aside for good reason. 1 quarter really says nothing about the rest of the fiscal year for either of these companies.

i honestly doubt we'll see 299 this yr or next. i predict 349 next holiday season, even if MS drops the 60gb to 299. 349 80gb ps3 is still a better value than a 299 60gb 360 when we factor in blu-ray,20 gb more storage, free online, etc. also the ps3 cant undercut the price of standalone blu ray players out on the market by too much, you have to factor that in also.

i think we wont see a 299 ps3 until 2010.

Hold on! I can't connect the dots. What are you trying to say?

oops! :lol

They have enough money anyway. What did GAF say when it was revealed that MS lost money last quarter in the games division?

Probably pointed to the other number where MS made $426 million over the past 12 months, conveniently avoiding RROD charges.

Anyway
Sony (Game):
http://www.sony.net/SonyInfo/IR/financial/fr/index.html
15 mths to 6/08: Loss $2,159 mil
12 mths to 6/08: Loss $1,922 mil
3 mths to 6/08: Profit $51 mil
3 mths to 3/08: Loss $1,245 mil
3 mths to 12/07: Profit $113 mil
3 mths to 9/07: Loss $841 mil

3 mths to 6/07: Loss $237 mil

Microsoft (EDD):
http://www.microsoft.com/msft/earnings/default.mspx
15 mths to 6/08: Loss $800 mil
12 mths to 6/08: Profit $423 mil
3 mths to 6/08: Loss $188 mil
3 mths to 3/08: Profit $89 mil
3 mths to 12/07: Profit $357 mil
3 mths to 9/07: Profit $165 mil

3 mths to 6/07: Loss $1,223 mil

Something something perspective. Both makers are losing $, one more than the other (depending which period you use anyway)

I shouldn't use Nintendo's figures, right? ;p

If you're trying to compare sales over the same period in the lifecycle it would be:

PS3: 14.41
360: 11m

Where exactly did you come up with these figures? Just curios because 14.41 would be the very exact thing they shipped during that time frame and considering they haven't sold everything they shipped during that time I would love to know where you pulled that number from as well as the 11 million for that matter. Is this some kind of estimate someone has put together for WW figures because you can't use sales as shipped during that time frame, right.

Since PS3 launch

PS3 14.38 Million
360 14.40 Million

The shipment numbers during the time frame really tell it all. What you have left is the full year before the PS3 launched essentially.
