Looks like Sony will be releasing 3 new SXRD (3-chip LCOS) TVs this fall:

http://www.heraldstandard.com/site/news.cfm?newsid=14626972&BRD=2280&PAG=461&dept_id=480247&rfi=6

Sony will begin producing its new proprietary SXRD (Silicon X-tal Reflective Display) televisions this fall.

"In layman's terms, this is a pure high-definition television, which gives more lines of resolution vertically and horizontally across the screen. It triples the number of pixels and provides much better contrast. The picture actually has some depth and almost looks three-dimensional,'' he said.

Sony is producing SXRDs in Japan for the eastern market, and the New Stanton plant will be the only Sony factory in North America manufacturing the sets, Koff said.

"I'm not sure of the screen sizes, but believe there will be a 50-, 60- and possibly a 70-inch version that we will be making here,'' he said.

"We are already building five new production lines for the SXRDs. In fact, we started that yesterday (Tuesday). There are new jigs and things like that we need to install for the manufacturing process, but the manufacturing process will not be vastly different from making the LCD (liquid crystal display) televisions we have now.''

I believe these TVs will be non-Qualia XBRs

Just found out some details on the 50 and 60 inch TVs:

KDS-R50A10 $3,999.99 Nov. 05 Oct 05/M HDTV monitor (3-chip SXRD/1920x1080 RGB panels ), qualia006 pure red, high contrast ratio, film like reproduction, WEGA Engine HD (DRC MultiFunction V2), S-Master, HDMI, Audio Optical Out (Tos Link), PC Input (D-Sub 15 pin), MS Viewer, New Edge Design, WEGA GATE User Interface

KDS-R60A10 $4,999.99 Oct. 05 Oct 05/M HDTV monitor(3-chip SXRD/1920x1080 RGB panels ), qualia006 pure red, high contrast ratio, film like reproduction, WEGA Engine HD (DRC MultiFunction V2), S-Master, Dual-HDMI, Audio Optical Out (Tos Link), PC Input (D-Sub 15 pin), MS Viewer, New Edge Design, WEGA GATE User Interface

It looks like these are not XBR tvs after all...

Just to compare, my 70-inch Sony Qualia 006 has an $13,000 MSRP and these new SXRDs have the 3rd generation SXRD chip (5000:1 contrast ratio vs. 2000:1 in my 006)

dammit we had news posted here a few weeks ago of new Tech for cheap HDTVs for $800 coming next year

why would I need to buy a $4,000 tv :(

It really seems like the Japanese are falling behind the Koreans in consumer electronics, namely things like displays and cellphones.

That's the manufacturing cost ($800), the actual cost to the consumer would certainly be higher.

More info:

These TVs will use 3 .61" SXRD chips with a 90% aperature ratio, 5000:1 contrast ratio and some other improvements over previous SXRD chips...

They will also accept a digital 1080p video signal via HDMI....

These are obviously geared toward the introduction of Blu-ray and the PlayStation 3 next spring....

The manufacturing cost mentioned a week or so ago was $400...

Actual MSRP would be more than that, of course, though not as expensive as these Sonys...

Just to be clear, these Sony TVs are Rear-projection Liquid Crystal on Silicon display....it is a reflective microdisplay like DLP and LCD but not really.....IMO, LCOS is the best of all the reflective microdisplay tech which is why I bought an SXRD TV recently :)

Getting back to the the $400 tech, that number is for manufacturing Motorola's Carbon Nanotube-based Field Emission Display.....they are the next generation flat panel tech and are further out from introduction...

Lots of companies are working on FEDs (Samsung, Sony, Fujitsu, Motorola, Hitachi, Pioneer and others) but are a less proven technology than LCOS and others..

Intel's Cayley LCOS panels have been scrapped, unfortunately....

Damn and it sounded so promising

It still *is* very promising.....but it will not arrive in October 2005 :)

Toshiba/Canon will be the first out of the gate with Field Emission Display products...

Toshiba's FED is called SED (Surface-conduction Electron-emitter Display) which, although not
Carbon Nanotube-based, will be arriving in stores in 2006 (the SED manufacturing facility will be completed in August of this year and pilot production begins in October)

SEDs have amazing performance but, with no inital competition from other FEDs, will be premium priced at first.....in fact, Toshiba will probably follow the Sony Qualia pricing model somewhat:Sony had/has a 1-year lead with 1080p tech (LCOS/SXRD) and people who wanted that 1year advantage (like me, for example) had to pay $$$$ for it...

Now we are about one year later and Sony will now have lots of competitors (DLP, D-ILA,Brillian) about to introduce 1080p products....and now we have these new/improved SXRDs with more down-to-earth MSRPs..

IMO, we will see expensive FEDs from Toshiba in 2006 followed by a mad dash by Motrola/Samsung/Pioneer/Fujitsu and others offering their own Carbon Nanotube FED products in 2007....once this happens prices will plummet (for the Toshiba NEDs too) since there will be so many CNT TV providers vying for customers at the same time....

This is how I see it...

Ya - 13 grand for a TV sounds terrifying to me. I am bristling at the thought of paying anywhere near two thousand....

I never pay full MSRP for any of my stuff...

In fact, if I can't get at least 25% off MSRP I won't spend a penny (and I have spent lots of pennys)

And my gear PALES in comparison to Katsura's setup (he works for EA Europe, I believe)

He has some Accuphase and Bel Canto DSD gear that makes me want to vomit.....

IIRC, someone mentioned he has Wilson Watt Puppys too....which alone costs as much as my entire setup...

He needs to die :D

Well, I guess I can live with my Samsung HLP5085W (Capt. Kirk) DLP.

That is a very attractive price for the 50" SXRD.

How different is that from your Qualia 006 KLee.

Do you know of anywhere in Houston that carries the Qualia. I just want to see the damn thing and drool.

Congrats on the purchase. Maybe the best non projector on the market.

How is it compared to the Marantz projector you have by the way. :)

I love this shit. The wallet hates it though. :(

:D

When watching D-theater video on the the 006, the picture quality is sublime

On paper, these new SXRDs are even better than my 006, but, in truth, I doubt the color reproduction will be the same since I doubt they will use a Xenon bulb like my Qualia :)

It is, literally, like looking out of a (very clean) window....my precious :D

The Marantz VP12-S1 is a different experience entirely.....it is in a light controlled room and the images are HUGE (120 inch diagonal Stewart Grayhawk screen)....I play games on that badboy :)

The Panny TH50PX50 is used as a PC monitor.....I am viewing this post on it right now...(use it as a TV too)

I will try to find out about any Qualia/Blu-ray demos in your area :)

Right nobody pays MSRP and thanks for giving me something to shoot for, but unless you have a crisp HDTV signal won't everything look like shit IE magnifying all the artifacts and edge enhancements on a DVD or the aliasing/blurrie in a game.

I intentionally got the shittiest DLP projector because of this. I mean untill they can match the capabilities of your tv, aren't you just watching a lot of inferior crap.

edit: shit my bad I didn't see D-theatre. But won't games look like shit unless they 720p
