Sony lays out its CES '06 plans

yep, i think this will be the biggest showing of playstation 3 so far. :D

NEW YORK — For the first time in a decade Sony will be on the main exhibit floor of International CES, with what it claims is the “largest booth at the show,” which will encompass all of the company's divisions.

Mike Fasulo, chief marketing officer, said the objective of the 25,000-square-foot booth is “not only to collaborate across all of our divisions, but to show how consumer electronics is transforming consumer entertainment in the future.”

This, plus the Jan. 5 opening keynote at 8:30 a.m. at the Las Vegas Hilton Theater by Sony chairman/CEO Sir Howard Stringer, makes it the biggest presence the company has had at the show in recent memory.

Fasulo noted that at the entrance of Sony's mammoth booth will be a 220-seat theater which will show short videos of Sony entertainment and technologies in 4K technology and 5.1 Dolby Surround.

The booth itself will feature what Fasulo called several “pillars” which involve all aspects of HDTV, from broadcasting and professional equipment, to branded HDTVs and Blu ray, to other consumer products. PlayStation will also have a featured place at the new CES booth, as well as what Sony calls “e-Entertainment,” the newest developments in cellular phones, Walkman, Vaio PCs and LocationFree TV, among others.

Sony's “Backstage Theater” will also provide tech seminars, exclusive HD programs, Sony recording guests and what Fasulo called, “other special surprises.”

And the mammoth booth will feature a “digital lighthouse that will be a beacon for signaling all attendees towards it,” Fasulo said. It will also feature a broadcast center, but as he put it, “more on that later.”

It will be dedicated to all Sony electronics products.
So how big the PS3 part of the show will be is yet to be verified.

If you think that PS3 won't be the showcase of Sony's booth, I have some beautiful waterfront property to sell you. :) The majority of real estate there, to be sure.

I still doubt about the playable presence......just an other PS3 theater would be boring, unless with completely new trailers and more games.

Final hardware should be available for this show, be it in dev kit or final end-user form..

I think they'll show new stuff on the games front - be it new games, or new media from already announced games, + basically show off all its features, the interface, the bluray playback, the connectivity options, the dual display options etc. Show how it'll fit into the home. I hope so anyway.

I'm inclined to agree with you - with a 2006 release, CES is the ideal opportunity to ramp up the release of information. Any damage that can be adminstered to the 360's image post-Christmas also has to factor in. That said, I doubt we'll see any floor-ready playable titles until closer to E3.

Aye. I'd expect the CES show to be more PS3 "The Home Entertainment Machine" - an all-encompassing focus - as opposed to PS3 "The Games Player", specifically. I'm not too familiar with what CES is like, but I'd imagine that might fit better with the type of tradeshow it is too.

Unless PS3 is delayed in Japan, though, I'd expect a first playable presence at that Feb show they're planning.

If we don't see playable games at CES or GDC so much for that Spring launch, then again I never had much confidence in it anyways.

yeah. Sony are going for it with home entertainment servers and UPnP wifi stuff. With a large booth, they could have some kind of 'future home' setup going.

Sorry to bump an old thread, but it's been announced to day that Blu-ray launch plans will also be laid out at CES:

Perhaps more significantly/coincidentally, Spring 2006 is mooted. CES might be very big indeed for Sony - hopefully this means a greater chance of more PS3 announcements too.

"At CES, you're likely to hear some announcements from a number of companies as to when you'll see our products on the market," Parsons told a group of analysts, industry members and reporters gathered at the product demonstration at News Corp.'s (NWS.N: Quote, Profile, Research) 20th Century Fox lot.

I wonder if one of those products will be PS3..

Flights to Las Vegas booked - CHECK
No news still on what will actually be on stand - CHECK
Totally crap hotel due to late reservation - CHECK!!!!

C'mon Sony, we need playable demos. Or rather, the people attending need them so I can get my impressions. I-8 and Warhawk ftw.

MO-TOR-STORM! Or a new Heavenly Sword trailer (or playable demo...)

I don't expect playable games at CES (maybe in February at that PS show they were planning), but if they do, that would be pretty kick-ass.

This stuff is still fun, too -- once games roll around, we won't have time to enjoy graphic demos and interactive showcases (and I'm not being ironic - sure, I want to play Heavenly Sword, but I'd love to see that realtime EyeToy face morpher in person as well.)

I don't believe that playable games will be there either. At least, not on the show floor. Playable might happen at a Sony event, like the PSP unveiling. Doubtful, but it could happen. Once the show happens, I imagine it'll all be theaters and hardware displays.

Why do you say Spring 2006 is mooted? Not doubting, just wondering your rationale.

I do agree with one thing, if we get major PS3 news, it will be release schedule in relation to the Blu-Ray stuff and the EXTRA functionality of the console rather than the games, this is CES after all, I'd expect that kind of focus on the myriad of things you can do with the console aside from gaming to coincide with the whole tone of the show.

From the link:

The Blu-ray DVD group said on Tuesday it still planned to roll out a high-definition disc format in spring 2006, though members of the consortium led by Sony Corp. (6758.T: Quote, Profile, Research) said they would unveil specific launch plans at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in January.

"We're sticking with the spring time frame," said Andy Parsons, a spokesman for Blu-ray, at a demonstration of the new high-capacity DVD format.

I want to learn more about the PS3 features. Operating System (XMB hopefully), online features (hopefully the web-browser will be there from day one) and so on.

Damn BluRay on my new HDTV makes me tingly down in the ginglies. The HDMI port is just waiting to be penetrated.

But please, NO MORE SPIDERMAN 2!

Wow PS3 may still be a go in the spring? MS isn't going to get much of a head start.

Eagerly awaiting launch date and a price point. :D

I don't know if people should expect too much ps3 stuff given the focus of the show and the fact that if there were going to be alot of new stuff then sony would say so or miss a golden oppurtunity to thwart holiday 360 sales with a just wait approach.

Nothing is going to stop X360 from selling out this Xmas, especially given the supply situation. There's no reason for Sony to say anything now. It'd only hurt their own sales too. If anything they're better to wait for X360 to quiet down, and talk alone to many many many many other people who won't have got a X360 over Xmas (be they interested in it or not) - and early next year is a good time to start doing that I think.

I wanta see controllable playable games! No touched up screens, no hidden wires, the system up front and center. Then we'll see what it can do, until then don't bother Sony! Time to put up or shut up no more smoke and mirrors!

Why not? Microsoft unveiled the Xbox at CES 2001 and then other Xbox products at subsequent CESes. Given that the focus of consoles like the Xbox360 and PS3 is expanding into areas beyond gaming as media hubs/extenders, I'd say the focus of the show is appropriate for a PS3 showing.

What probably won't be declared at CES, assuming the PS3 does show, is firm launch details or pricing, which is probably about the only thing that might have had a chance of "thwarting" the Xbox 360 launch in any way. Besides, MS is doing a good job on their own with these shortages of thwarting the launch. ;)

That all depends on the progress of the software. Games can look alittle wonky in the middle of the development stage. It's not a good idea to go from what they showed at E3 and TGS to something that's mediocre due to early development plus how much of a delay in development do you want to create by having teams stop what they are doing to produce something playable just for a consumer electronics show. Hopefully we see entertainment hub stuff since it is CES.

I see you're making an argument as to why there may be no CES playables and the like, and I'm not really countering that - just addressing the point about why Sony isn't saying anything now (be it CES related or whatever).

At that CES nothing was playable though. If you going to show yourself for the 3rd time it would seem to me that you would want to show something that's playable. I don't know if devs are that far in terms of playable software. We'll see.

It certainly would be a nice surprise. I'll be there, got my hotel and plane ticket a couple of weeks ago. Are you going?

Warhawk because people have been asking for Sony to bring the series back all generation and now it is. I-8 because of who its made by.

No, I wish :D I'll be prepping for exams then!

I want MotorStorm. Can't wait to see how that one looks now.

Well, they were both real time and looking very promissing in a really early state. The end products are going to be awesome. Both being made by excellent developers, one game a new take on a long lost classic, the other a totally new ip.

Not to mention, it's very likely that both will be launch games.

I've heard the name warhawk but never played the game. What system did it debut on?

Launch game for the PSOne. Was a ton of fun and the big 3D enviroments(at that time) blew everyone away. Not to mention the real-life cheesy as hell cutscenes. :D

So what? The original Xbox and the PS3 aren't on the exact same development/deployment timelines. MS had announced the Xbox at GDC 2000 but didn't officially unveil the machine until CES 2001. I don't recall them making any significant noise about Xbox at E3 2000 in between those two events. Still, they showed interactive demos of Malice and Oddworld didn't they.

Point is, the "focus" of CES is hardly the issue here as you originally suggested.
