Sony: PS3 Controller Redesign NOT to be unveiled in January

According to Japanese gaming-mag Famitsu, a Sony exec. has denied rumors that a redesigned PS3 controller would be unveiled at this January’s CES in Las Vegas. With all the praise being heaped on the 360’s new wireless wonder, the enduring popularity of the good-old DualShock, and the harsh reception the “boomerang” controller has received from all levels of the gaming world, its notable that they would stick to it. Here at Joystiq we like a challenge, so we’ll say it: since no one has experienced the controller hands-on, perhaps Sony knows what they’re doing.

Sorry if this is old info.

All that says is they are not unveiling it in January...

So, all they really said is no new controller at CES? Well alright then.

*grasps onto glimmer of hope*

Their big PS3 show is in February so if they have redesigned it (as I think Harrison has hinted) its not going to be shown till then.

what do you mean?

It's a slight jump from denying a CES unveiling to saying that the design shown to date is the final one.

I'd like a direct quote from that Sony exec though, not Joystiq's filtering. Not cause it seems unbelievable, but too many inaccurate reports fly around based on nothing (and they're often PS3-related!).

Gamespot posed basically the same question to Sony, and were told it was purely speculation - which could constitute a denial in some people's books, and indeed Gamespot concluded the rumour was hence bogus - but that doesn't mean very much.

Not like the Dual Shock was ever a masterpiece of design and comfort. Who knows, maybe those longer handles will stop my palms from hurting.

I'm with Joystiq on only one thing, and that's no one has played it so I won't judge it. It's the same exact shape as the Alpine PSX controller, which got great reviews. So here's hoping. Looks doofy as hell, though.

I don't think the controller looks bad. But then again, I fucking hate the DS2 and it's itty bitty nubs it calls handles.

Then again, when everyone said Sony needed some big news to derail the 360 launch... not sure this was it.

IF this is true, then Microsoft thanks you, Sony. Then again, so do I.. I really do want to see MS come out on top this generation, even though I'm still getting my PS3 on launch day.

One thing I do want to point out to everyone - fanboy or not.. all it is going to take are a few missteps on EITHER company's part, and its going to be near impossible to recover. Sorry, Nintendo fans, but I am pretty much counting you guys out of the 'big boys battle' this time - nothing personal. I'll still pick on a Rev, too - but mostly for the nostalgia of the old stuff.

This doesn't mean anything other than no new controller will be shown *at CES*

I hope they still plan to show something. Although maybe now it'll still be the same mockup units?

Although they should have final devkits by then (CES).

It's officially the best controller for next gen consoles now.

No, it's not official. But ok.

It's starting to look more and more like that though. Whoever thought MS would take best next gen controller ftw.

Fuck that! I want a new DUKE for 360, bitches!

Wait till you see the Revolution "classic" controller. ;)

Phil Harrison said at TGS that there would be 'interesting additions' to the PS3 controller. It was aired at G4. Conflicting reports. (though, maybe he, the Sony japan exec, just meant the overall design would stay the same)

Wouldn't it be cool if nintendo designed its classic shell exactly like the 360 controller. With the remote sticking out just like a big middle finger, a big middle finger to ms :lol

After playing around with one the other night, I disagree. The handles angle too far inward to feel natural in the hand. You kind of have to hold it with your elbow out, and that just sucks. Oh and triggers. Fuck triggers.

If I wanted a trigger, I'd buy a cowboy hat.

Sony will probably copy the Revolution controller's features, recognizing its position relative to motion sensors and stuff. Nintendo told everyone its design too early. Maybe Nintendo wants Sony to copy its controller's features so that games can be ported easily.

That would be wise.

The revolution controller is retarded. If Sony copies the design then I will become a Xbox360 gamer.
