‘Tomb Raider’ Live-Action Series to Begin Filming in 2026, Sophie Turner Confirmed as Lara Croft

The "Tomb Raider" live-action series at Amazon Prime Video is getting ready to shoot.

As previously reported, Phoebe Waller-Bridge will serve as creator, writer, and executive producer on the series. But now, Chad Hodge has boarded the show as executive producer and co-showrunner alongside Waller-Bridge. Jonathan van Tulleken will serve as director and executive producer.

"I'm so excited to announce the formidable Sophie Turner as our Lara alongside this phenomenal creative team," Waller-Bridge said. "It's not very often you get to make a show of this scale with a character you grew up loving. Everyone on board is wildly passionate about Lara and are all as outrageous, brave, and hilarious as she is. Get your artifacts out… Croft is coming…"

"I am thrilled beyond measure, to be playing Lara Croft," Turner added. "She's such an iconic character, who means so much to so many – and I am giving everything I've got. They're massive shoes to fill, following in the steps of Angelina and Alicia with their powerhouse performances, but with Phoebe at the helm, we (and Lara) are all in very safe hands. I can't wait for you all to see what we have cooking."

As a Core Design and LAU trilogy Tomb Raider fan I don't really care about the story in these games. The appeal for me is the exploration, puzzles, and Lara looking sexy. I can maybe sit through a movie like the Angelina Jolie one but a whole series? This could star a big booba lead and be directed by the reanimated corpse of David Lynch and I'd still pass on it.

I think those folks are being scored by a very different metric that what we see and think. It's not so much about how 'good' the project is, but can it actually get finished, on time, on budget, with an acceptable level of view engagement and ESG score? PWB was probably tapped for all this stuff YEARS ago when her star was a lot brighter.

Chad Hodge has produced a number of shows that are at least tangentially in the same wheel house as a Lara Croft show, though he is almost 5 years from his last project, so maybe not so fresh (or called back now that his skin color isn't a detriment?). Jonathan van Tulleken is the bigger news, IMHO, as he was involved with Shogun, Misfits, and a bunch of stuff that at least gives me some hope for this project.

Still, that first trailer is gonna make or break it.

The core plot could be her journey seeking out specific male opponents in abandoned tombs, lecturing them about their obnoxious mansplaining and finally making them apologize for being a man.
