Sources: Congress investigating another possible Sessions-Kislyak meeting

Hmm, how much does Trump even actually care about Sessions I wonder? Honestly, kind of surprised he hasn't tossed him to the curb at this point (unless he has some weird longtime friendship thing like with Flynn), but I guess he must have some birdies in his ear telling him how terrible that would look. Really wish he would get the boot though. Couldn't happen to a nicer guy.

They're all the Russians' picks, not Trumps.

Has GAF reached saturation point with these stories? We got a multi-page thread with people genuinely arguing that blackface isn't racist, but another thread on the devious white supremacist attorney general's being a Russian pawn has yet to break a page. The Comey firing thread and every thread that week moved at breakneck speed.

We already knew about the Mayflower Hotel, just no confirmation that they met. So knowing that congress and the FBI are investigating is cool, but not really earth shattering news.

Douchebag. Yes, me.
I have a feeling that the conclusion of this investigation is going to be that the Russians had zero compromising info on Trump. They realized that if you just constantly applaud him and make him feel like he's part of the big shot international politics important guy club he'll do literally anything for you.

Given all the rumors about Russian mob ties to Trump's businesses in the '80s and '90s, I'd have to think that Russia has SOMETHING on him. Of course, after the Access Hollywood tape, they might not have anything that would actually damage him politically...

The FBI and Congress are examining a campaign event last spring during which Donald Trump, Jeff Sessions and Jared Kushner were in a small gathering with Russian ambassador to the U.S. Sergey Kislyak and other diplomats at Washington's Mayflower Hotel, multiple U.S. officials told NBC News.

Five current and former U.S. officials said they are aware of classified intelligence suggesting there was some sort of private encounter between Trump and his aides and the Russian envoy, despite a heated denial from Sessions, who has already come under fire for failing to disclose two separate contacts with Kislyak. Kushner also denied through a spokesman that he met privately with Kislyak that day.

The Mayflower Hotel story's been known for a while now, but was downplayed earlier because of how ridiculous it seemed.

I guarantee you that at some point, Trump is going to flat out attempt to say that there was nothing wrong with collusion, then the IC will crucify him.

I'm sure he'll try to spin it like the Russia had the interests of the US at heart and Putin just wanted to help out the US which was being run into the ground.

Every time I come across his name, I hear that dark whine during chilling, tense moments from True Detective's first season.

There's a part of me that wonders if this might be one of their end-game scenarios. They probably know Trump is stupid enough to potentially incriminate himself and accidentally admit he colluded with Russia.

What you didn't notice though is that he put the word colluded in quotes.

"What's wrong with meeting with the Russians? We want good relations, not bad. 'Collusion' means 'working together'. It's a beautiful thing really. Putin is a great guy. The U.S. isn't so innocent - Just so you understand - we worked together on mutually beneficial things. Not bad things. Good things."

This is almost literally a plot point in Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy and I would like to not live in a spy novel anymore please.

Did Trump and friends basically think they could get into the Whitehouse and brush all their dodgy connections under the carpet and not be accountable?

It's amazing that they would even risk it. They must be certain prison never happens for them or they are idiots.

He's basically said that almost verbatim several times already.

And the GOP backs him up on it.

That's literally what they've done their whole lives. It's how they get to positions of power they have.

Yep. It should also be kept in mind that it's still not shown they won't get away with it. Their reputations will be ruined for what they obviously did even if congress doesn't hold them accountable though.

The most surprising thing is that there's actually some kind of push back at the Federal level of government against. And the most depressing but not surprising thing is that it's not coming from the political party that's currently in power, and that the people who are getting most trampled by this are the ones that still tenaciously support that party.

When we get the inevitable "All the President's Men" style movie from this, it should be called "The Mayflower Conspiracy". We can even bring back Hoffman to play Bernstein again.

It needs to have an ahistorical line about "The Russians came over on the Mayflower, just like the Pilgrims... how can you get more American than that?"

We have to feel SO lucky they're all fucking idiots. Imagine if any of them were competent.

I don't think that was Sessions being an idiot. Remember, that broke not long after the Flynn stuff, which was the main reason he was fired. I think he did it to save face instead of outright resigning. May regret now, but I don't think it was a stupid move at that time

I can only think that the pressure is going to increase on Sessions. They already have him under oath denying the meeting and knowledge of anyone else associated with Trump having met with the Russians. If the reporting is accurate that he was in a private meeting with Kushner and Trump and the Russian ambassador he will be truly boned. I'm willing to bet they already have evidence and they just want him to deny specifically. He can't plead the 5th.
