NEW YORK -- CBS News has learned about a potential terror threat for the day before the election.

Sources told CBS News senior investigative producer Pat Milton that U.S. intelligence has alerted joint terrorism task forces that al Qaeda could be planning attacks in three states for Monday.

It is believed New York, Texas and Virginia are all possible targets, though no specific locations are mentioned.

This seems like a weird thing for the US intelligence to announce. Why would they announce it and in such a vague fashion if at all?

For one, keeps everyone on their toes. Could be a good or bad thing.

Secondly, might dissuade the attackers.

What's better? Not saying anything and it happening? Or providing some information in hopes of preventing an attack? In this case knowing is better than not knowing.

They think killing people will get Trump elected? Please this is the very reason to not elect Trump and his fear monger party.

The world really doesn't know how are system works.

A good chunk of people have already voted. Hell predictions are by Sunday 70 percent of likely voters in Florida will have done it by Sunday.

I guess they're thinking this might dissuade the attackers? If they know they're being expected and that their plan might fail because of it, they'd be wise to reconsider!

I don't even believe stuff like this anymore. Could just be lies from the FBI to help Trump. Way to compromise your reputation for years to help someone that was going to lose anyway, fuckers.

First post should have been:

"This time AMD has gone too far"

Shameful failure on the part of this nerd forum.

If the enemies know that we know an attack might happen they just "might" not go through with it...

The FBI's got dirt on someone in the NSA and wanted them to scare Democrats away from the polls, because nothing else seems to be working

why would they not do it on Election Day? Seems like that would create more chaos.

Because some people might not hear about it until after they voted.

Their objective is to make sure people switch to vote for Trump so giving them a day's time is what they'll choose to do.

Hopefully nothing happens, since the media already knows the possibility of it and the states, maybe they know a bit more.

Hopefully the same thing that occurred in Garland last year will occur again. They get taken out before they can even start.Though alive would be great for intel info, but seems extremely hard to get that done.

Though all this might just be rumors within the terrorism world, which would be best case scenario.

I thought Watson was helping us out.

I hope that whatever is being planned can be thwarted. This world should be a peaceful place but it is very far from it. We could rise above our hate, greed, differences one day.

yet if someone were to leak this they would be seen as a traitor and spy deserving of jailtime for putting lives at risk. but CBS News is a mainstream publication so it's all ok!

This poster pulses with an appeal so broad the typical restraints of our societies fall by the wayside.
Well we know it's not happening if the word is out.
I can't think of a single time that one of these "possible terrorist attack planned" reports came out and then something actually happened – in the US, at least. I mean, that's a good thing, but just saying.

Worse thing is we have an FBI that might not be that enthused to look out for it

Are you seriously suggesting the FBI is gonna let Al Qaeda do some bombings so Trump gets elected? Are you for real?

(And that's also assuming such events would sway big enough masses, btw)

I would hope not, but I don't even know anymore

Er... I'm not really particularly knowledgeable on how homeland security works in the US (or elsewhere tbh) but isn't this the sort of stuff you DON'T announce to the world before you deal with it?

What is this, like a weather forecast or something?

"We are Expecting mild storm of shrapnel and bullets, at least a few inches. Dress warmly"

It's not an official announcement, sounds more like a leak (which would also account for the vagueness).

Was it wise to have this information leaked to the press?

Assuming the plot is true....now that this information has been leaked, surely the perpetrators in question could just alter their plans to focus on different locations? Or just initiate the attacks earlier then intended?

First, it would be terrible for the loss of life alone. That can't be understated.

But you can just see one or both of the nominees using this to try to rile up the citizens for war support. And I have a hunch which one would do that most effectively.
