UNHRC said:
People fleeing the recent incident claimed that the town came under an indiscriminate attack by the South Sudan armed forces. Refugees report witnessing their loved ones shot dead at a close range, with many arrested or slaughtered, including children. Families fled in different directions; the elderly and disabled who could not run were shot dead. Many people are still hiding in the bush trying to find their way to Uganda, while homes and properties were looted and burned. Main roads out of the town are reportedly blocked by armed groups.

Hundreds of civilians were killed and thousands fled to Uganda, adding to the million+ refugees who've already left South Sudan.

Al Jazeera said:
Michael Makuei, South Sudan government spokesman, confirmed its forces had attacked Pajok.

"As you know Pajok has been in the hands of the rebels so what happened was government forces went there and fighting ensued and so the civilian population that has been staying with the rebels had to run away," he said.

"I don't know the figure [of those who might have been killed or injured] but in any fighting there must be casualties."

God damn. Stop killing people.

Salva Kiir's not going to make friends (that he needs to actually build a functioning country) like this.

That's horrific, and to come from the government.

Not a whiff of regime change though. Odd that.

The sad truth is that Sudan has been a shithole of violence for 20 years, but they have nothing of value to plunder so no one will send in their army to restore peace

I'm honestly superseded South Sudan went to shit as quickly as it did. The president and ex deputy need to get over their shit and work together. Fucking seriously, you guys are killing your country. Not that they care, it's just a power game to them.

Anyhow, they both deserve to be in jail for the atrocities they commited but that's not going to happen either.

It was "indiscriminate" only in sense of gender and age. It was fully discriminate against the people there on ethnic and religious grounds.

I'm so confused. I thought South Sudan gained independence due to the atrocities done to the people their by the government in Khartoum. But they are now after independence killing each other?

And the world continues to ignore African problems.

It's not just Africa they ignore, as the victims of genocide in Myanmar can attest to.

Not everyone in South Sudan was anti-Sudanese, they just hated Bashir/Khartoum. The Sudan People's Liberation Army has always been up to no good.

This is absolutely awful, but I'm more admittedly more or less ignorant on the subject. Any informative reading material that gives a solid grasp on this conflict?

Their leaders cause famine and ethnic conflict in order to profit from oil resources.
Country is fertile.

Heard about this on the news, also new rules of engagement from the American side too, less approval from higher ups needed for strikes

Not an update but NPR had a thing on this: NPR: A Quarter Of South Sudan's Population On The Run From Brutal Civil War

Government soldiers looting aid warehouses. I had no idea this was going on. Amazing. As with other posters in this thread I'm surprised a country that cleaved itself in half over ethnic conflict is again in turmoil because of ethnic conflict. Makes me question the opinions I've had about Iraq and Syria.

Also:
Humanitarian aid agencies, you say, are making a difference. They have kept millions of South Sudanese alive over the past three years. But there is criticism that these refugee settlements and these camps - these protection camps are taking the place of political action. And it's that political solution that will be the key to resolving this war.

Do international aid programs in war-torn regions exacerbate conflicts by minimizing the instability caused by political chaos?

If by politics they mean invading, overthrowing governments and taking power for an indefinite amount of time... Then sure.

Somehow I don't see that happening, nor even if it did working out too well either.
