People are terrible, especially on twitter.

Our 'American kids' are up there winning the spelling bee, you racist hicks.

As for why the racist hicks' kids aren't winning, I suspect they spend too little time teaching their kids to spell and too much teaching their kids to Jesus.

Yes, everyone taught about Jesus, even the non-white ones cannot spell and are hicks. Clearly.

Yeah, looking at it now I feel like it was a very stupid thing to do when I could have just wrote it normally. I guess I just got too annoyed at the racists and found it amusing that their perfect "American" kids were being beaten by who they see as foreigners/immigrants. Still, I get what you mean and I apologize for it.

Leaving the comment up though, because I won't try to hide my fuck-up or cover it up and pretend it never happened.

Oh my god, you're like some sort of defense lawyer for racists. Discrimination due to skin color or ethnicity is still racism. Something like this happens and you complain about the word "racist" being thrown around, and yet so little concern is expressed for those who are effected by the exclusionary (racist) attitudes?

And, just so you're aware, I have it on good authority that black people are quite capable of being racist.

You might want to read more than just the first few words then.

Racism doesn't require prejudice based solely on colorism. And yes, minorities can be racist--especially when internalizing supremacist-borne ideas of dubious nativism--even within their own groups.

It's a very strange thing. The first time I heard a Mexican coworker of mine get angry at a Mexican customer, and call him a wab/wetback behind his back, I just kinda stood there like "This is a term other people have probably used to try to hurt you, why would you use the same word..."

Like a black guy calling another black guy a nigger. I just...what?

Ok, I read through the tweets and some of them are extremely racist, but part of it just feels like combination of ignorance and shame. They feel like they were beaten at their own game. In fact, I see some of them criticizing and parenting more than anything.

There were actually 2 or 3 non american kids yesterday iirc. It's an international event. There was a young man from Jamaica for example. However, the people complaining are talking about kids that are american. They came from various states. As for the white kids? They spelled their words wrong.

They had a segment where an espn person went around DC and asked people to spell "misspell". There was a kid with a thick southern accent and a shirt that said MURRICA and as soon as she started talking to him, I knew it was going to be good. I still don't get the American obsession with spelling bees though. Spelling strikes me as a pretty bad indication of intelligence/ genius or skill. It only exists because of the crazy orthography that the English language developed after years of change and interaction with other languages. It's not an indication of intelligence, but it is an indication of skill. The kids don't know the words they're spelling, they know how to spell them based on language roots and definition.
