Spelunky |OT| With Fate Guiding My Every Move

Had to switch this off as I have to go out. But yeah most definitely purchased.

It's very devious which I love. And I've just come across how they stop people wasting time on stages.

Chilling indeed...

Anyone else having problems with the game saving? It keeps throwing error messages out every time I finish a level. It also keeps telling me that I can't unlock achievements, which is odd... Great game asides from these issues.

This game is awesome.

It's nice when your expectations fall in line with how the finished product actually turns out. For me, the same thing happened with Fez and Trial: Evo, as well.

It's been a good year. : )

I have played for 3 hours now, I had the same problem as you guys of just dying at 1-1 to 1-3 all the time. But at about 2 hours in it clicked and now I can get up to world 3 every 10 or so runs. You just need to learn how all the enemies work and it gets way easier, also using rocks to disable traps and kill enemies from a distance is key in my experience. So far I am really loving this game, reminds me a lot of the Binding of Isaac, which is a very good thing. I can see myself easily sinking 100+ hours into this.

got to 1-4 on my 3rd attempt...

on my 2nd try game randomly gave me the jetpack in a crate, and bad things happened :lol

Ugh, SPIDERS. ;_;

Also, I need to stop accidentally whipping my damsels/dudes/dogs in distress.

Also, I need to stop accidentally jumping on spikes.

Hmm, this could end up being a long list.

This game is wicked hard.

Si the climbing gloves make the rope pointless...is there a wiki that tells me what everything else does?

I love throwing items. They love throwing themselves back at me, and causing unexpected death.

That is all.

.... Heh, that demo could go on FOREVER! Considering the infinite random stages, it's almost like you STILL can get a free game if you don't want to unlock the characters, see the future stages, or actually accomplish anything! XD There's also not many "Buy full game!" notifications at all, so it's a pretty relaxed experience.

Anywho, Spelunky is win, love the graphical polish to everything here, you can tell this game was made with a lot of love. With all the flash-like emotionless characters that can pop up when making HD 2D, it's nice to see someone transfer the same care of a pixel sprite into a hand-drawn one, always. Other than the pixels themselves, nothing seems to have been lost in the translation; if anything, the added details actually flesh out the characters.

Selectable Damsels (Including the, err, Mansel?) is a nice touch. I like the variety of unlockable characters, too! A game that understands gamers aren't all white men! LoL.

I know some people have described this game as simple, but compared to the likes of Meatboy, Braid, 'splosion Man, N+, Fez... I love having a character that, can, y'know, actually DO things. The variety of items really helps make this game for me. It shares that little bit in common with a beat-em-up. Picking up items, seeing what they do, and then messing with your own ways to make use of them, is half the fun! And something those other games miss out on, which always makes me feel much less interested in playing, personally.

Audio and Visual presentation just seems to be top notch all around. A very solid product, that's worth more than the asking price, I'd say. Online Consol marketplaces let us get some great games for some dirt cheap prices this gen...

Si the climbing gloves make the rope pointless...is there a wiki that tells me what everything else does?

The glove won't allow you to grab onto anything that's out of your jump range, the ropes will allow you to climb to them. So they both serve some unique purposes.

As far as a Wiki... dunno, but the in-game encyclopedia is a great resource. Also, there's lot of new items in this XBLA version, so I doubt there is a complete list anywhere yet. Wouldn't personally want one yet anywho... "discovery" really helps ease the pain of consta-deaths, y'know?

I'm really hating the ghost right now :p. I suppose there is really is no way to defeat the ghost, right? I just try and run to the exit as fast as possible.

9/10 NeoGAFfers don't understand statistics. The other 3/10 don't care.
I think I just found a secret level, but I don't want to spoil it as It scared the hell out of me when it happened.

I managed to get to 3-4, then fell into a endless pit :(

Goddamn. If you thought Dark Souls or Super Meat Boy was fucking with the player, Spelunky takes this approach to a whole new level.

What I hate is that sometimes you don't even see the obstacles on the screen yet, but they're firing at you. There's nothing more annoying that just jumping onto a platform and getting shot by an arrow when that little arrow-shooting statue wasn't even on-screen yet.

The ghost shows up if you spend more than 2:30 seconds on a level. And he's totally invincible. You eventually just have to get the hell out of there.

The music is godlike in its subtle Seinfeld-esque jazziness, I don't know a better way to describe the funky but subtle sax noises coming out of this game.

I died like 20 times in the tutorial level LOL, trying to get all the gold like the one next to spikes...

This is the only questionnable design decision for me. I understand why the ghost is there, but I love exploring and the ghost in an exploration-killer.

It would make it too easy.

Also, try taking a picture of the ghost when you have the camera.
Pretty funny.

Oh my god, I was trying to put my finger on what the music reminded me of. Seinfeld is exactly what I was trying to think.

Incredible game, incredible music.

EDIT: if anyone wants to add me for leaderboards sake BobRichards91 is my GT.

Been playing since I woke up. On my first run, almost got through the jungle. After that, my brother was interested so I let him join me. Co-op works pretty well so long as your mindful of your fellow adventurers.

People who've played the PC freeware game will have no trouble jumping right back in.

Addendum:
If the ghost passes over a gem, it upgrades it to a much more valuable version. At least in the PC version, I assume this trick still works. Abuse it at your own risk.

Aside from the parachute, how the hell do you drop down without losing health? Can you throw a rope up on an angle?

The few times I've reached level 3-4, I've noticed it always has the "feels like the 4th of July" event for some reason.
The alien mothership one.

Is this today only ?

Random madness.

Have 1 heart all the way up to 1-4. I hear a shop keep and his kissing booth girl argue and they kill each other. I pick up the shotgun feeling that I may make it to the jungle. I saw to myself, but out loud, "First thing I see s'gone get blasted". I take one step and a giant spider falls on me from the ceiling, killing me instantly.

Curious to know how characters are unlocked. You just randomly find them? Or you get them through achievements? Hmm.

You can always jump and fire a rope above you, too. I do that to get to hard to reach places when I don't have a jet pack.

In the original, you can crawl over an edge and hang off the side and throw a rope above you.

Exactly what I was looking for. Thanks!

Some of the situations I've gotten myself into in this game have had me in stitches. I bought a mystery box from the storekeeper and it ended up being a camera. Naturally, I thought it'd be nice to get a snap of my new friend to show everybody once I made it topside again. Hilarity ensues when the shopkeeper pulls a Justin Bieber on me and starts beating the crap out of me. Not a fan of the paparazzi obviously!

I've found a bunch of them in levels. I suspect that they'll just appear randomly, probably only in specific zones per character.

Fun game, bought it today and the wife and I have been playing all morning. Very hard. We made it to 1-3 and that was it. She loves throwing rocks for some reason. I wish there was more explanation on the game though in the game itself.

Im so tired of this, its like this in every single XBLA thread. I thought port begging was bannable. It takes so much away from the conversation when you have 5 or 6 people on every page saying "No PSN/Steam no buy."

I just dont get the logic of bitching about 360 having no exclusives, and then bitching when it has an exclusive you want, even if it may be limited to a year exclusive. Im guessing its gonna be the same for Deadlight and Dust.

End rant/

Par for the course in *every* XBLA game thread. It will never change.

Like what? The whole challenge and the fun is in learning stuff for yourself, really.

I died 200 times before I realised that you could
walk through spikes
, and it was the discovery that made all those times I'd died messing up on them worth it.

I did something similar, my brother and I found the camera in a shop and I bought it to see what it did. Shopkeep instantly shot me and my brother ran away screaming.

Made it up to 3-2 on my best run. This version is amazingly polished -- the music and visuals are great, and I love all the little touches, like the non-aggressive creatures in the caves.

So far it doesn't seem to be a huge departure from the original, but that's not a bad thing. The one thing I miss is the ability to pull out a bomb/rope without using it, so you could use it to spring traps and such. It made the control scheme a little more complex, but it could come in handy at times.

Goddamn the ghost. I wanted to explore the levels but apparently that's not what this game is, it's more find shit and then get out as quickly as possible. I just played 1-1 and found the damsel/pug right when the ghost appeared...and the pug was right at the edge of the screen so I had to book it all the way to the other end carrying the bug, drop down, then book it UNDER the ghost and made it to the exit.

Then in 1-2 the ghost appeared while I was in a shop and cornered me and I went kablooie. Aw.

This is going to be a really fun game, though, I can tell.

I hate the new Xbox interface. It's absurd that a game like this can come out with no mention (still an ad for Minecraft though) and be buried deep in menus. Super lame.
