LOS ANGELES, June 30 - On Wednesday, Steven Spielberg's apocalyptic thriller "War of the Worlds" invaded movie theaters worldwide. But the director had already moved on. That night in Malta, Mr. Spielberg quietly began filming the most politically charged project he has yet attempted: the tale of a secret Mossad hit squad ordered to assassinate Palestinian terrorists after the massacre of Israeli athletes at the 1972 Olympics in Munich.

Mr. Spielberg has taken risks before: he said he feared being seen as trivializing the Holocaust when he directed "Schindler's List" in 1993, at a time when he was best known for blockbuster fantasies like "E.T.: The Extra-Terrestrial" and "Raiders of the Lost Ark." And with "Saving Private Ryan," he gambled successfully on audiences' tolerance for prolonged and bloody combat scenes.

But with the as-yet-untitled Munich film, already scheduled for Oscar-season release by Universal Pictures on Dec. 23, Mr. Spielberg is tackling material delicate enough that he and his advisers are concerned about adverse effects on matters as weighty as the Israeli-Palestinian peace process if his project is mishandled - or misconstrued in the public mind.

With the movie being filmed and release this year, it leaves plenty of time for Indy 4.

You're out your fucking mind. The time for Indy 4 has come and gone. Harrison Ford is two steps away from dying. He looks worse than Sean Connery now. Seriously.

Regarding the grown up Indiana Jones, people wanted to know when the man in the hat was coming back. "As a matter of fact, I just received the new script two days ago. I have yet to read it," he said. "I'd like to be able to read it this weekend. I'll be talking to Steven on Monday, and then we'll figure out what we're going to do. So, it's definitely in the works."

I don't see this movie happening this year.

Spielberg has done this in the past before. Both Jurassic Park and Schindler's List were released in 1993. Big effects movie in the summer, followed by the smaller no effects movie in the fall/winter. Jurassic Park was released on June 11 1993 followed by Schindler's List on November 30 1993.

This year War of the Worlds was released on June 29th and the untitled Munich movie is slated for December 23rd.

It also only took 3 months to film Schindler's List and with this Munich movie obviously not being a big effects movie they could easily get it done in time for the December release.

I'm not saying Spielberg can't shoot Indy or that Harrison Ford won't, I'm saying they shouldn't.

It's like asking for another Star Wars prequel.

The December 23rd date was set months ago... and Willco, Spielberg isn't Lucas, and never will be. Still, I'm not that optimistic that Indy 4 will actually happen. Spielberg and Kennedy keep talking about how they'll do it "depending on the script..." And isn't that what's been said for the past few years now?

Agreed. So many series crapped on by a late sequel (or three).

Yeah, this date was set a while ago, and I'm pretty sure filming is all set to begin in a couple weeks.

However, Spielberg's Abraham Lincoln biopic with Liam Neeson is set to film in January, so Indy IV wouldn't be started until next summer at the earliest. Also, an interview with Kathleen Kennedy from a couple days ago implied that the film getting off the ground was still dependent on getting the script right, and that the new revision wasn't due for another two months.

I'm still hoping that the whole thing falls apart. The trilogy is great as is, and I don't see much good coming out of a fourth at this point, especially when it apparently gives Indy some younger sidekick that could potentially replace him if they chose to go that route. I'd rather see Spielberg work on original films.

WHO DEY!?
I was going to comment on how batshit insane Spielberg is. He started filming yesterday and it is being released in December? That is a crazy turnaround. I actually reread the line in the article to make sure I understood it correctly.

What does that have to do with anything? Spielberg is a talented guy, but I don't want an Indiana Jones film that showcases the title character in a mummified form for the sake of money or appeasing delusional fans.

Minority Report and Catch Me If You Can was also released in the same year.

Furthermore, A.I., Minority Report, and Catch Me If You Can all came out within an 18-month span (summer '01, summer '02, winter '02).

The entirety of War of the Worlds was done in 7 months. Spielberg is an absolute beast.

You know I was thinking what kinda crazy crap Harrison Ford could pull on the set and the press junket for Indy4 that would top the grief Tom Cruise gave Spielberg for War of the Worlds and I can't come up with anything. Curise is the tops man!

Speaking frankly, Ford should just quit the press circuit seeing how dull an interview he has become. He seemed pretty bored during his last round of talkshows and that 'Inside the Actor's Studio' wasn't much fun. There isn't much passion left in the old man....

Yup and he shot all of the heave effects scenes first so ILM would have time to finish them before the release date and the move had a TON of effect shots.

Yeah, I remember thinking back when they started filming in November that they could never make the June 29th release date. Spielberg really is unbelievable.
