Why are so many people here against choice :/

It's really weird. It doesn't have to be one or the other.
Cause that choice gives clear advantage to one over the other. Especially in a competitive online multiplayer game that's not a good thing . Allowing gyro to be turned off is already cutting it close as gyro aiming has the clear advantage. Also The game pad has all the same functionality as the pro controller and the some. So I don't see the problem.

I don't mind using the Gamepad but if there was a choice I would pick the Wii U Pro Controller in a heartbeat. Not only is that controller probably in the top 5 of best gaming controllers, the Gamepad causes my hand to cramp up after a long time...

The battery life of the Pro Controller is stuff of legend, too. The Gamepad on the other hand needs to be charged too often.

I'm not sure you understand him. He wants a choice, ala Smash giving the player multiple choices as far as controllers go. That is the problem. He recognizes that Splatoon only works with the Gamepad but would like to use the Pro controller.

I think people need to give Gyro controls more than an hour, seriously. The aim on stick only is terrible because it doesn't have auto aim, which is a crutch you're probably all too familiar with. Gyro control totally removes the need for it.
That's why i find it funny when some people in this thread complained about tumbsticks only feeling "off". As far as i noticed there's no auto aim to help with the imprecision of using thumbsticks to aim. And lest's hope it stays that way.

Regarding aiming, going by what the manual says it seems that motion controls will stay tilt only.

In one hand options are good but in the other they had a vision of what they wanted to accomplish and to accommodate other controller options they would have to re-work a large part of their game which will cost them time and money, things that a game that everyone here is saying that is going to bomb hard can't afford.

Yeah...

I'll gladly take the "disadvantage" then. I'm already consistently in the top 1 or 2 spots on the gamepad. I guarantee I'd almost always be in the top spot with a pro controller.

This choice affects those you're playing with.
The slower aiming of those using control sticks could put your team in an advantageous or disadvantageous position.

Unless we can choose to not be grouped with those that do don't.

That's in truf war.

The only way for you to find out if you can remain competitive withoputh motion aiming is when the full game is available and then some extra time after that when all the modes are unlocked. And of course watching the stats where precision aiming matter the most.

What i would like is an smal icon that indicates what controller setup everyone is using, you know to keep things "honest".

Look above. People should be lucky to be grouped with me. I'm sure part of this is a lot of Wii U owners aren't used to playing shooters.

Uh. Ok. Sure.

Although I could live without being called a nigger by a seven year old white kid that I will never meet face to face, I would love to have voice chat available with friends only at least.

basically this, it gets tiring having to mute a racist asshole every other match.
basically every match if they know i'm black -_-
Option for friends should have been available though

Oh okay, so I won't have to adjust the angle of the gamepad to look up/down like on the last page was showing?

Nope. It's just right stick aiming like other shooters.

My biggest complaint is that playing with the Gyro off is horrible. I don't know what it is (acceleration?), but I couldn't hit anybody when I needed to. No reason why it should be that way. I got used to the gyro so it's not a problem anymore, but I think the option for proper dual analog play should be there.

This game has no auto-aiming/snapping unlike most other console shooters. Couple that with wide spread on some of the guns and I can see a lot of people complaining about the "inaccurate" aiming. I don't think they should include auto-aim. I'm gonna test it out in the next session.

This times one thousand.

Now that I've played the demo I'm so excited for the 29th.
Can't wait to play the full game, and to wear my Splatoon T-shirt! :)

Well, I'll say this at least, the test nailed a few vitally important things for me in this kind of game:

- Character movement feels damn good. Responsive, elastic, and tactile.

- Shooting feels great, as does the feedback from both hitting other characters and splatting surfaces with ink.

- Netcode was surprisingly solid and lag free, it just feels great and the characters look solid - no jittering around, no teleporting, no sensation of a bunch of boxes sliding around and mechanically pivoting when they turn.

The team at Nintendo deserves a lot of credit for nailing these aspects right out of the gate; things that more experienced developers (in the TPS/FPS genre) often fail at.

That said, I'm unsure about content with lack of maps early on however the maps do seem large and there's a lot of potential depth here. A lot of strategy to learn in trying to cover and hold territory, since this is about much more than just team fragging or holding a few capture points. I may also wait for impressions on the single player campaign before jumping in. One thing I'm disappointed by, having played the testfire, is that there will be no AI matches for the versus gameplay. It would be great to run around and gain experience on the maps and test movement strategies. And the problem with the gyro controls for me is that they don't work quite like gyro is usually implemented - the right stick should not be locked to rotating the character only. Gyro controls work great when they are only for fine tuning aiming within a conventional twin stick control scheme.

Also seeing it running at 60fps in person makes the character design and art direction all come together. This is one of the most striking and fresh games Nintendo has achieved in a long time.

We need a Delfino Plaza map down the road that has mario come in with fludd every now and then to clean away the ink and piss everyone off. Team scores at the end of a match will be 4.1% to 3.6%.

Bowser Jr. should also appear as Shadow Mario and randomly attack people. Each person killed will explode the opposite team's colors. You just never know who will win it's so random!

I don't mean in that way, like the reticle just felt sluggish. I had the sensitivity up really high and still felt that aiming was dreadfully slow. I don't think it needs auto aim either, but the actual process of aiming itself with the analog sticks is bad.

Because it goes against hundreds or thousands of hours of muscle memory associated with traditional controls. Besides, the range of motion is Splatoon is a lot more limited than an FPS. I don't see the motion controls offering any sort of significant advantage or disadvantage.
Agreed

You know what would be interesting is if there was another mode where there was a third team (maybe could have less than 4 people for balance) that had the goal of washing away all of the ink a la Sunshine. They probably couldn't turn into squids because they'd be eliminating ink, but maybe they would have a faster run speed/ some other adjustment to make up for that limitation. It would be intriguing to see how a mode like that would play out, at least as a novelty for a weekend or something, haha.

I see. Yeah it would suck if it feels too sluggish. I should probably bump it up to the highest sensitivity than.

I would too, give me a controller that doesn't hurt my hands after 20 minutes. I would aim just as well and could make on screen selections faster than looking down at the gamepad.

In Smash Bros you can play online, in teams no less, with any controller you want. It's the players choice if they want to use a Gamecube or be "disadvantaged" with the horizontal Wii Remote.

I can't believe I'm teetering on buying a game or not based off whether I wanot to deal with the controller.

Lol, if I was on a team like that and one of the other teams was blue, I'd avoid washing away the blue ink as it's my favourite colour.

I'm sure I'm worse than a lot of people with or without gyro.
But in a situation where you're facing similarly skilled opponents, you may mot fare as well.
Unless you go into all the big PC shooters or games like Sin & Punishment and dominate with a pad, in which case, maybe you're just that much better than everyone else.

Mind blowing fact:

Some people play better with gyro, some don't.

Some people play better with traditional aiming, some don't.

The more you know!

This! I think I'm gonna master the controls with the gyro. The lack of auto aim certainly affects when you have gyro off, especially in such a fast paced game like this. With gyro it feels more natural it's just a matter of practice a few rounds with it and you will be good to go.

Yeah. It was horrifying for me when I was younger, but unfortunately you grow used to it...

Exactly. More options are never bad things. I fully understand that things would need to be reworked if the Pro Controller were to be an actual alternative to playing this game, but anything would sure beat having to use the Gamepad. It's unsettling that people are against this.

Wow! People are different after all!

Wasn´t it confirmed that you can go online with two players, one using the Gamepad and another using the U Pro Controller? If that is the case, I don´t see why you shouldn´t be able to go online with just the Pro.

I don't know why people are even trying to argue against choice in controllers. I like how this plays with GamePad and gyro so I would be unpleased if I didn't have that choice. Adversely I can understand why someone would be upset when they can't play the game with Wiimote+Nunchuk or Pro Controller. There's really no reason they couldn't make it work. Maybe it won't be as competitive (and this point is arguable as has ben shown) but honestly shouldn't the choice still be left to the end user?

Gyro controls are great. Lie the gamepad on your lap and lightly tilt it to get some precise aim. Consistently got me 5+ kills a map. It feels great in a way that most dual analog shooters don't.

So what are the general impressions? I downloaded the beta last night but missed all the hours it was playing at.

Watched the direct though, looks really fun with a lot of depth looks like.

I tried to hook up my pvr after having it unplugged for some time and realized all 12 of my sockets are used up... What to unplug...
There's always that one plug that isn't being used.

I've had a pencil sharpener plugged in for at least 3 years and only recently realized that I've never had to sharpen a pencil in at least 4 years, lol.
