And as a note, I didn't actively engage in combat when I made the switch over to Team Roller. The idea is to avoid combat and just paint the fuck out of everything, especially since killing the opposite team doesn't actually help you win that much. Slows the enemy down and allows you to keep painting if you're the one alive, but as a Roller you just want to keep on Rolling.

I feel like this would work better if there was only one Roller per team, and the game was about supporting your Roller or killing the opponents Roller. Would provide a nice rolling objective to centralize combat and force more combat encounters.

I really don't see the need of voice chat in this. Everyone knows what to do at all times.

As I expected things are way to crazy and move to fast voice chat to even be that useful. Looking at the map makes it very clear what area needs to be painted, or recaptured or checked on. The game is built on the visual. There are actual pings in the game too with the d-pad. Had actually forgotten they were there at first.

This is so integral to the gameplay, its absolutely the best feature for this game.

I never figured out how. I noticed my teammates kept teleporting to me because I had my roller so far up the enemies rectum, but I saw no button promt for it.

I loved the roller ult though. Shooting from higher ground just made them an easier target for it.

No, there is gyro/tilt aiming and yea, it's not the same.

He obviously didn't read the next line in my post where I said I was using the gyro...

Gryo is still better than dual analog, but it's more of a chore to use. It's slower and less precise than the remote and takes more energy and movement, so for all the extra work you end up with worse results.

This game is finally the signal that Nintendo has abandoned the remote permanently (outside of sideways-remote multiplayer use). If they didn't bother to support IR aiming here, the probably never will again.

The more sluggish gyro controls almost seem appropriate for firing the paint, though. It matches the goofy and chaotic nature of the game. The remote would almost feel too serious and sharp for something as imprecise as splattering paint all over.

Really good game. The gamepad tilt controls are terrible though. Was very happy when I saw the option to change them.

Anyway, very fun game.

btw anyone get a little mad when the 2-3 rollers on your team go in the same direction in the beginning of a match? Come on guys. You can coordinate without mics to know one does left other goes right for maximum effectiveness

I have to say it was pretty fun.

- Connection and performance was really smooth (which once again makes me wonder why smash is unplayable for me).

- Levels are OK, it's only 2 here so I don't know how the rest will be but I was left feeling like they could have looked a bit more unique (felt very similar in terms of visuals). But the level design was pretty good

- I guess it will take people learning how to counter it but the roller felt incredibly OP. For me it felt like the most effective weapon for both killing and painting. I actually think I ended first every time I used the roller (never scored less than 1000 points with it).

-THANK GOD you can disable motion controls, would have been a deal breaker.

Overall pretty fun but I doubt it will make me drop other shooters to play this. Garden Warfare gave me the same cartoony shooter feeling and I have more friends playing it (with it having been free on Ps4 and all that.... not to mention almost no one has a WiiU).
For me it would have been a sure purchase after a price drop. I hope Nintendo doesn't have to Nintendo and this goes below $60 in the next 5 years

Surprised at how much fun that was.

With everyone being new...roller felt OP, but that won't last. Sniper was either way too difficult to learn in an hour, or underpowered, probably the first.

Maps were great. I preferred the warehouse though.

Gyro controls are going to take some getting used to. It was starting to feel more natural at the end of the first hour.

Sniper defenitely has a learning curve i was really good with it after 7 matches

Squid mode came in handy a lot when it came to being stealthy. If they don't notice you, just duck into the paint and pop out with a surprise attack (only worked like twice though as they usually saw me hide).

Yeah, I think that's gonna be my favorite thing to do in the game. Don't like being smashed by the rollers when I'm trying to regain ink though.

My thoughts on the demo:

  • [*]Motion controls are shit, disable immediately forever.
    [*]Paint Rollers seem unbalanced.

  • -You'll be gimping yourself by disabling the gyro aiming. You should try to get accustomed to them. This isn't mouse+keyboard, but it's certainly more accurate and much quicker regular stick controls.

-Paint roller's not as OP as some would think. It's great for gaining a ton of ground, but you'll get destroyed in the open, against ranged weapons. A team full of rollers will get destroyed by a team with a mix of weapons.

I barely looked down at the gamepad and only used it for superjumping, so I think that pro coller support should be added in future updates.

Also did not like motion controls.

I think the greatest thing about Splatoon is that it encourages many different play-styles.

You can do the frontal assault charge and paint up the middle or go for the sneak attack, painting the sides of the map, and then quickly squid-form away.

Or if you're on a death streak and just not feeling it, you can re-gather yourself by painting a quiet corner and still help out your team.

Some quick thoughts:

  • Yeah, motion controls are the worst. Didn't get to try normal.
  • The Roller seems way over-powered in that mode.
  • After 3 matches I was already kind of bored. Nothing to really mix things up from match to match.
  • Art style is dope as fuck. Love how colors change each match.
  • Really wondering if this is worth the asking price. I hope the let us try the other modes.

so everyone who was saying this game needed voice chat have seen the light, right?
No, there is absolutely no reason for an online multiplayer game to not have voice chat in 2015. Even if it's not completely essential to win the game, it's a bone headed choice to not have the option in the game at all. I honestly can't believe people are defending not having voice chat, especially when you could just turn it off if you don't want to use it.
No they are not
What? They work fine. At the beginning of the rolling animation it flicks out a bunch of paint and if you're standing near a wall it covers about as much as it would when I was using a gun to paint the same area. It's just a slower animation to get essentially the same results.

My thoughts on the demo:

  • Motion controls are shit, disable immediately forever.
  • Paint Rollers seem unbalanced.
  • Grenades felt huuuge and I'd clip the edges of basically every surface with them. Had weird as fuck throwing arcs as well.
  • Lack of real interaction with opponents to progress the match, combined with no voice chat with my team felt like I was playing alone 75% of the time.
  • Visuals are fucking outstanding.
  • Combat felts awesome as hell when two opponents are shooting each other, strafing, and using ink to move around. Just didn't happen enough or seem to matter at all.
  • Lack of class switching in the middle of a match makes it pretty boring. There is no rock-paper-scissors or adjusting going on by the teams. This is something I despise in modern shooters that lock users to load outs or classes.
  • Wish I could super jump without the touch screen. Having to switch screen focus in an action game blows.
For the most part I wasn't really impressed. I was going to buy this day one initially for streaming, but now I kinda don't care. Game is going to have some really rough balance and options problems with this being Nintendo's first stab at an online shooter. The lack of voice chat still blows my mind.

I couldn't disagree more.

Real fucking talk:

Demo made me cancel my Witcher 3 preorder for Splatoon instead

keep in mind, I have a parent-bias and always look for more stuff to play with my boys in the room :)

You would deny your boys the pleasure of having sexy time with Yennifer? Worst parent ever

I think I might try some sniping tomorrow. No one seemed to use the vertical space in my games so it was easy to pick off wandering inklings.

I'll admit, voice chat would be nice to have in friend team matches. I'm not convinced random teammates would suddenly come to my aid if I started asking

Splatoon is trending topic worldwide on twitter <3. What can I say, that was insanely fun! A bit messy at times were I was just shooting randomly but oh wow so impressed in how well it controls. Day oneeeeeeeee

My thoughts on the demo:

  • Motion controls are shit, disable immediately forever.
  • Paint Rollers seem unbalanced.

I had the opposite reaction to these two. Paint Rollers are just easy to use, and everyone had only been playing for under an hour total, so the relative power cannot be worked out right now. I was able to destroy rollers with the other three guns if they weren't basically being ninjas and sneaking around.

Gyro aiming took a little getting used to, but was great for fine tuning aim after using the sticks for broad motions. IR is still the most precise console aiming I've seen, but Gyro + Stick is definitely number two.

Yeah charge/sniper seems to be if your going for kills mostly, if you can get a team with a dedicated sniper/charge to pick off say the rollers while atleast 2 others concentrate on covering ground then it can be a pretty devastating team.
There seem to be sneaky climbing areas where a sniper can get up high and dominate a large area in relative safety (you can always paint the wall and go get them, but that takes time away from painting turf). Saw a few doing this quite well.

-You'll be gimping yourself by disabling the gyro aiming. You should try to get accustomed to them. This isn't mouse+keyboard, but it's certainly more accurate and much quicker regular stick controls.

Motion controls suck for snipers tho

Being unable to switch classes except by quitting out and reentering matchmaking is unfortunate.

I'm the jerk who always chided my team in TF2 if we had more than 2 Snipers or Spies and had no Medics, so that felt wrong to be stuck in a class for the whole match

Played for the full hour and had a pretty enjoyable time. Just some quick thoughts about the game.

Positives
Swimming and climbing as the squid feels great.
Easy game to pick up and play.
No lag or communication problems once I could get in
Good weapon variety

Negatives
Gameplay is far too repetitive. Only having one mode certainly doesn't help.
Controls are poor. Why can't you look up and down with the right stick?
Both maps were very plain with nothing going on.

Overall I enjoyed it, but doubt I'll go back for another demo and certainly not enough to consider spending money on it. It's a game for the Nintendo die-hard with far better multiplayer shooters out there for everyone else.

I hate the gyro controls. I could see if Nintendo hadn't released an enormous bulky controller, but asking me to use that thing in any other manner then laying flat in my lap is annoying as hell.

I enjoyed the game other then that.

so everyone who was saying this game needed voice chat have seen the light, right?
Yeah. I see that I was right. Game would have been a Day One with voice chat. As of right now it's a "meh, I'll get it at somepoint." Casuals are too stupid for this game to not have voice chat. The lack of understanding that Turf War isn't Deathmatch, combined with my idiot teammates following me tells me voice chat would have been useful.
