I wish we had had more time to play the demo though... I want to try the gyro controls again. I originally turned them off and the camera just felt a little awkward, but never did attempt it again.
 
Played 10-15 rounds and I must absolutely applaud the game development team for making something that isn't grim dark military shooter or some variant thereof.

In fact, I love that the whole point of the match is actually paint the world to win instead of shoot the other player to win. It's fantastic.

Right? It would have been so easy to do what every other developer is doing.
Taking someone out certainly helps but it doesn't win any rounds. it only takes 15 seconds at most to get back to the middle of the map after you've been taken out and it doesn't contribute to the team's score at all.
 
Oh, Christ. "Real" controls?

One of my favorite things about this game so far is how bespoke the control scheme is. It feels like the team started with a blank slate and created a unique control setup that works for this game, not something based on shooter lineage or longstanding tropes.

I love the Wii Remote IR setup for shooters as much as (or more than) the next guy, but the GamePad works beautifully for this game. Being able to perform subtle and accurate aiming based on a minute tilt -- whilst doing just about anything else, which was a limitation of the Wii Remote due to its relative lack of buttons -- is extremely practical and fluid. Additionally, I don't want to imagine the game without a real-time updated ink map and touch-to-fast-travel option -- those are both essential to the gameplay.

Anyway, I know it's half-pointless to engage the trolling, but I more wanted to express how much I love this game's controls.

This is why the gamepad is indispensible. Looking down and finding empty or claimed areas to retake is more important than even being able to talk to a teammate. The time it takes you to point out something wrong, is time you could/should've been doing it yourself. If I had a mic, I'd just be yelling, "Look at your map!" constantly.

One thing I like, is I found myself pairing up with a teammate and just following them til they ran out of ink, then spraying ahead of them so they can still move forward, then alternating back while reloading. This game is gonna be amazing.
 
Gyro controls were perfect, I actually turned them off for one match, and although I would have got used to them eventually, I found them I would often instinctively jilt the gamepad when in a skirmish. In the end I used the right stick 99% of the time but slightly moved the gamepad when I need to adjust a shot a bit and it works well. And like people said, there were options to disable motion all together if needs be so sucks to be them if they missed the options.

It takes a bit of getting used to at first, but it works so simply, so intuitively, and so well, that it dumbfounds me that anyone is having a problem with it, let alone prefers to go without it.

Hm, didn't see anything about a discount. I pre-ordered it through the game after a couple matches; it definitely charged full price for it.
 
To use the Gyro well you need to combine it with using Y to reset the camera and using the right analog stick for movement.

I only ever really used Y to reset the position when I was at the respawn. I didn't really need it as much in actually battle because I used broad strokes with the right analog for position and movement while I used gyro for fine tuning for kills. It felt really natural for me.
 
Same here. I stuck with splattershot, splattershot jr., and the roller. Roller was especially fun for me because I could sneak around and flank while they're trying to attack my buddies. The last few games today I really improved my roller game. Didn't matter if the team won or lost, I had an amazing time just playing around and finding new techniques.
I did the same thing too. In the last 10 mins of the event, I stayed with the Splattershot to improve on the "Splatterhopping" tech.

This is why it pays to get adjusted to the gyro controls. This isn't possible I feel or extremely hard with it turned off. I've watched several videos of people turning off motion controls and it's painful to watch them play the game because how how they're controlling the camera or not controlling really. The motion controls make looking up and down, once used to them, someone you don't really have to think about. It's just something you do allowing you to focus more on strafing, moving in and out of the ink, putting down ink, looking at the map, etc.

I get now why Nintendo put it on by default and had you do the tutorial first. To make you get used to them right away because there is a learning curve. I think people can unless you go into the game expecting to hate the gyro aiming and not willing to give a shot which is the attitude I noticed from some videos or stream archives.

Now if you still don't like them while giving them a shot that's okay. I think one should at least try though. I think the single player might very well help more on this front if given a chance.
I tried playing with the motion controls off, and it just felt very clunky to me. I'm surprise how well they work. It really is hard to do this without the gyro aiming.
 
So last night and for maybe 20 minutes today I was really kind of annoyed that they had no onscreen indication of how much ink you had left. Then I randomly look at my character and see the tank on its back and think "Heh, that is pretty cool. I wish they had pointed it out so my dumb ass would have noticed it sooner".

Anybody get over 1200 in score?



I hope Nintendo figures out something to do about disconnects. At one point I was the only person on my side during a match. I think that was the 14% one.

That's the issue with only 4 v 4. One disconnect creates huge balancing issues. Also three minute rounds prevent adding a new player into an already running game like in COD.

I got a few times over 1200 with 11 kills and (almost) no deaths. Splattershot Jr too stronk.
 
Sounds like you're doing gyro controls wrong.

You use the right stick for sweeping camera movements, you use the gyro for very precise aiming.

The gamepad should be in your lap and you gently tilt it around.

3 being where it's actually comfortable to play a game using the bulky Wii U gamepad. I'd be more inclined to give it a pass if what appears to be some misguided game designer hadn't disabled the vertical axis on the right analog stick when using gyro controls. Hopefully that was a bug and the stick will work normally on release.
 
every game i constantly got 1000+ using gyro and the splattershot jr so the gyro works really well, this is just gonna be another case or wiimote or pro controller with call of duty on wii some people cant play with wiimote controls to save there life were as oters are god like with them doesnt mean its a bad control scheme.

They could have just put the minimap coverage on-screen like most games do. Just because this game does it different doesn't make it the right way and neither does other games doing the minimap different make that the right way. However, having to look down at my lap to find out where areas are during a potentially action-intense moment is ridiculous. If I had a mic I'd be yelling behind you, or where to angle the wail, grenades, etc etc.

This game was fun. I enjoyed it. However, a lot of the decisions the company made are pointless - they just wanted to shoehorn the gamepad in. The respawn screen? They could easily have made the joystick toggle you through available superjumps.

I also hate the lack of momentum conserved when jumping in squid form - its like Smash 4. Going from full speed to half speed when jumping is jarring, despite the extra foot you get from jumping in that mode.

Nobody tries to play like this, some people are just completely incapable of understanding that some people might have control preferences. Then again, I'm the crazy guy that played Pikmin 3 with analog controls so who knows.

More often it's best to aim a bit higher than normal if you're trying to cover the place ink. Placing grenades all over the place can lyre people into corners for you to snipe. It's all about mind games.
I was confident that the Splat Charger would work with more stable aiming than provided by the default controls, and this video really does seem to reinforce that.
 
I'll be trying to learn the gyro controls since it offers the best precision and speed.

What is the best angle to hold it in neutral? Vertical? Horizontal?

When I tried in the demo, I don't think I could turn right or left with it, just aim slightly to the left or right. So for gyro, you'll still have to use the right stick for turning?

The issue I have is that I can only use the control stick to control horizontally, and using the GamePad for anything but vertical movement is uncomfortable to me. So the result for me, and probably many others, is that you're using your hands to aim vertically and the control stick to aim horizontally. It's weird. It's not intuitive. And most importantly, my brain doesn't work like that. I'm not wired to use my hands to aim vertically and my right thumb to aim horizontally. I mean, I can aim with it but it's just a lot easier for me if everything is on my right thumb instead of splitting it up like that.

The lack of something (as long as it's made optionnal) is never something to be happy about ! For everyone not wanting to have voice chat in the game, they could simply have made it so you need to check a box in the options to allow both speaking and hearing other players who activated it too.

That's not being in favor or against voice chat, it's simply the most logical solution, that makes everyone happy.

It's amazing that I can't communicate with my team? I don't talk with randoms unless they initiate it, I would be talking with my team in a lobby. A mute option would solve both parties problems for pubs.
 
Can't wait for this to come out, the demo was really fun. Gyro controls clicked for me during my second session, no problems with the controls now.

The game feels well-balanced to me. The charge-shot kind of sucks in my opinion, if you miss you're fucked and it doesn't seem like it can cover a lot of ground quickly, but the splattershots and roller are fine.

It's funny seeing so many people calling the roller OP yesterday. The roller
1) Doesn't shoot ahead, so you can't do stuff like shoot down a hall, quickly squid down it, and repeat to move around quickly
2) sucks against anything ranged
3) Doesn't let you take advantage of higher ground

That said the roller is extremely fun to use. Killing other rollers with the slam attack is really satisfying, and this is fun to do with all the weapons but especially with the roller it's great to hide under ink in an area that's mostly your color, wait for someone to come claim in and sneak up behind them and roll them.

Can not wait to check out more weapons, maps, and modes. I was turned off the game a lot the last time I saw a video of single player because it didn't look so hot, but I couldn't give a shit less about single-player after playing the demo.

I would not want voice chat in Splatoon tbh. The matches I played today would be a mess with voice chat. It's too frantic. However, it would be great when playing with friends to call out a strategy or route to take. It'll definitely be missed opportunity to not have voice chat when the friends mode gets released. For these random shuffled matches however, it's for the better to not have it there. Especially with how world-wide the players were. One server had ppl from every region, I'm sure you saw a bunch of JPN names even playing from US or EU.

I agree. Voice chat in a random room with cross-region players creates a negative atmosphere where people from other countries make for "bad" allies because you cannot coordinate with them.

I've always preferred the nuances of voiceless communication, and the ability to analyse the movements of players to guess at their strategy so you can support it.
That said, the lack of voice-chat within 4v4 friends is annoying. You can work around it, but it would have been better if it were an option within the game.

I found it very useful and used it a number of times myself when I was alone defending some big spot...and it worked awesomely, most times a teammate came in by surprise and helped me clear the opposition. I hope they add more commands like "fall back", "spread", or something, this way you could easily communicate with people from all around the world in an easy, fast manner.

This just feels like backwards game design. The wii u has the tools for a great new experience and yetyou wanna utilize old stagnate game design that battlefield had already proven to be dated. Being able to simply touch is partly why mobile gaming has a more diverse audience, they don't have to use extra menus to placate archaic design,allowing anyone to hop in and join on a mutual skill floor.
 
The Charger became so fun for the third session. I would consistently get a high score with it. It's really good for area control and disrupting enemy advances in your area. I'm not as accurate or mobile as the guy in the video, especially since I tend to take the high ground as often as possible, but I still hold my own really well. Can't wait for launch. =)
