I didn't think I'd go for Splatoon, but this Testfire has me convinced. The game was extremely fun, and felt quite a bit more lighthearted than your typical online shooter. Squid movement feels great.

Preordered the Amiibo-less version right away, but now I'm wondering whether I should go for the Amiibo bundle. I hate physical clutter, but... extra content in game...

Basically was in the same boat. Thought Splatoon looked cool from the get go but didn't think it was necessarily for me... Testfire changed that. Tried the game, and then watched the most recent Direct and now I am hyped! Preordered the game and Inkling Girl amiibo.

The thing I was most impressed by while playing was the smoothness of everything... there were people from japan in nearly every match and god knows from where else, yet it practically felt like a LAN situation... unreal. Both MK8 and Smash, fun as they are online, display clear lag from time to time.

So, gaf, did servers hold?

It was fine other than the very uncommon disconnections during play that I was hit with. Happened only a few times when I played. Also there were moments where it wouldn't connect when wanting to form teams. Otherwise it was fine. Nintendo will most likely work on these problems before release.

On the subject of servers and online, you guys think it's worth buying an ethernet adapter for the Wii U? I want to minimize any possible lag and disconnects.
anyone ripped more music from testfire yet?
There is nothing Splatoon-related on ffshrine yet. That is the only site I check for vgm rips.

I'd always say it's worth it, but admittedly I'm pretty distrusting of wireless. I'm sure it can be perfectly stable in modern times.

That said, they did officially "recommend" it for Smash too, so...

I was using wifi and it seemed fine on my end, very smooth when there were no errors. This is assuming all problems were on their end though lol.

Thanks for the replies, guys. Sounds like Slatoon will be perfectly playable by launch then.

Yes, it is. The good news it, every wii eth adapter would also work with the wiiU.

Playing all three hours of the demo reaffirmed my opinion of the game. It's awesome. I can't wait to play it again.

Someone has to turn this part into a gif as a reaction to the gyro control misunderstandings :D

I think this would be better, with the actual game and gamepad shown: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PjpcbDmDSEA&feature=youtu.be&t=20m13s

I got up and down right but for side to side I was tilting. The tutorial should illustrate the movement so there's no confusion. With how other players were aiming during the testfire I think a lot of people were doing it wrong.

Guys, so I've heard that you will be able to at least join your friend's rooms like in Mario kart, you just won't always be in the same team. Is this true?

Cause if so I'm going to have to add a lot of gaf splatoon players till august lol

That is correct.

That's the situation before August update which adds a separate mode allowing you to be in the same team with your friend every match.

Here's a youtube playlist containing all the Turf War matches I played during session two, half Saltspray, half Walleye (720/60fps footage):

Splat

I had so much fun that I dipped back in during the final session, even though I was already running late for a night out! I've kept a close eye on the game ever since it was first announced, and I couldn't be happier with how it looks and plays. It practically drips with summery gaming vibes that are forever linked to the Dreamcast era for me, which may explain why I was grinning ear to ear the whole time I was playing. 29th May can't come soon enough.

Ok thanks. I will buy one ASAP :D

I was a bit confused because in a different thread, people were posting unsatisfactory impressions of ethernet adapters, but then again the thread is almost 3 years old.

Thanks for the vids!

Your description of the game being summery is perfect.. I also felt that way and it couldn't be released at a better time considering that! Bring on the summer of splats 2015 I say. :D

I've been offline for the better part of a few days while moving. Is there a consensus on GAF generally about how the game is?
Everyone in this thread seems to love it. There is another thread up at the moment about the lack of voice chat that people are being debbie downers in, so I guess that's something if that matters to you.

Check out the Splatoon Direct. It mentions this and a ton of other things.

The majority of impressions have been extremely positive, sprinkled with complaints of gyro controls, Rollers being OP (they aren't), and lack of content/voice-chat/matchmaking.

Personally, I think I have finally found my replacement for the last of us factions multiplayer.

Is there a video that shows how to move the gamepad for gyro controls? Just want to make sure I was doing it right.

It's fun. I wasn't interested in it before, but after playing the demo I'm considering buying it.

It helps that the servers worked pretty damn well for me. Had only one disconnect (never in a match) and almost no noticeable lag (only 3 quick instances that I could notice). Considering I have a shitty brazilian internet, this is quite a feat.

I have a US Wii U but playing from Istanbul with a wired connection. I had a couple of "failed to connect to partner's device" while trying to start a game, but no problems once in a match. Not even any noticeable lag, which I get sometimes in Smash probably from the opponent's connection.

Because of work and my time zone I was only able to play for the last demo period, but it was a blast. I mainly used the roller, and it seems OP between beginners, but it will probably level out when people get better at picking rollers off before they get in range. Many times an opposing roller and I took each other out, but there's some strategy to try to get around and hit them without getting hit.

I'm broke, have a backlog, and very little time, but I still really want Splatoon. If I only get one full retail-priced game this year it will have to be Xenoblade X, but if I'm able to swing one more this an extremely strong candidate. But I'm also really interested to see what Star Fox has to offer...and Mario Maker looks amazing...

Finally saw the JP testfire stream recording. Good stuff.

ed: Arrgh, watching the blonde guy was embarrassing!

I got a few questions and figured I'd ask in here. If this is the wrong thread then sorry!

1) Do we know if the game will allow for multiple character saves?

Like if I want to do my own create a character can my kids each create their own too for when they play?

2) Do we know if the game will allow for 2 player split screen ONLINE MP?

Like can 2 people play online together from the same console?

I thought Wii U saves were inherently tied to the selected Mii user?

I've heard no mention of it. The only 2-player split mode looks like one specifically designed for the lack of map which suggests it won't transfer to online play.

Yeah I was hoping we could just boot up the game, and then pass the controller around between each of us to play matches. Then when we pass the controller just go back to the menu and select our personally created Squid.

Ok. Do you have one of those? I will see if I can buy it.

I used to have one, it never failed me.

I just use Wifi now as I never have latency issues, I have a nice ass router though. I would use a wired connection but with how everything is placed here I would actually have to do some wiring work.
