Splinter Cell Co-Op Blows...

Man, me and my roommate have been playing it for the last week or so. It's pretty horrible.

We play it on Expert (never tried the easier settings, never do) and we don't save mid-level. So if we screw up in a mission, we start over, you don't get more than one life in real life.

So anyways, at first we were going slowly through the level and we'd die inexplicably. And we were so entranced in the nice looks and cool team-play aspects that we overlooked how godawful the actual game is.

Here are a couple of HUGE problems:

- The AI doesn't have to shoot at you to hit you. We've gotten shot at through walls, trucks, and multiple headshots when the guy isn't even facing us. They have homing bullets. And it's not that there is a hidden guy, we end up going through each level (well, we're only on the third, it's hard) about 20-30 times, so we know where the men are (although there is some randomness in location). They also absorb bullets like crazy, and you must get a headshot in order to kill them. Shoot them 15 times in the gut, and they still move unfazed. Retarded.
- The sound. The game sounds good on the exterior, but once you get into it more you realize how horrible it is. For one, the ambient noise means nothing. In the second level, there is a raid going on and you're forced to make your way down the side of a building (climb down pole, slide down a power line, or repel down). Even though there is gunfire all around you the men who are firing can still hear you. That's ridiculous...Same thing at the beginning of the same level, the first enemy you see is crouched shooting at nothing and if you walk behind him, you hear him say "What was that?" WHILE he is shooting.

Which brings me to the voices. I have come to the conclusion that you're not actually hearing what they are saying, rather what they are THINKING. They have an inner monologue running through their heads that, get this, continues running even if they're dead. You've got an empty room, and you can hear a guy (perfectly clear) on the other side of the room. You make a slight noise, he hears you and starts babbling about something (they're all pussies, too, saying "I'm a dead man" and stupid stuff like this). Anyways, you kill him and you can still hear him talking. Check around the level and there is no one else, os it's obviously him still talking.

Anyways, overall, I'm very dissapointed with this mode. I have yet to try the single player, so I can't comment on that. I'm sure it's standard SC issue, so pretty solid. At least, I would hope so as the Co-Op is terrible.

Keep in mind that we're still playing through it simply because we HAVE to beat it...for ourselves.

Is that in the Seoul level? There is a guy behind a closed door you can only kill by going through a hole in the ceiling. Really weird, I never understood what was the point with this guy.

First level it happened all the time, but it happened in the second level, too.

{EDIT}
But even if it was a guy somewhere else, why does it SOUND LIKE he is right behind us? That's bad.

That, or less them cowardly talking down to themselves. I don't think every single soldier would do that in a war. It's pathetic.

Maybe if they let Crytek develop the next game then we'll have truly free-flowing environments AND badass guards ;)

I was under the impression he's a "back-up" in case you nail the officer outside -- can you get the Jong info from his computer? I can't remember.

I haven't experienced any of these problems.. no homing bullets when I play. :P

And if you shoot an enemy 15 times in the gut and he did not die, then you missed 13 times.

I've experienced none of those problems. Co-Op in Chaos Theory is probably the best part of the game. You are playing the Xbox version correct?

I'd have to agree. And yes, on Expert.

I couldn't stand either of the previous two Splinter Cells, but I absolutely love Chaos Theory's coop. Been having a blast doing the coop campaign with a friend on xbox live.

Played through 3 of the 4 co-op levels so far over LIVE and have never run into any of those problems. Even played through 2 of them via split-screen too and never had a problem.

Absorbing bullets: You do realize that it gets harder to aim as you keep the trigger pulled, right? Try using a sticky shocker as its a one-hit move.

Hearing dead men talk: No idea. Never had this happen to me.

Headshots when not facing you: Never had this happen either. They turn around and shoot fairly quickly though. Plus if you miss, their rifles are much more powerful than yours. Shootouts are not advised.

Use stealth and tag-team tactics more. And use the knife. Have one guy hide and have the other guy draw out the enemy. When the enemy is all focused on one guy, the buddy can hop out and knife him before he knows what's happening. Maybe you're just not good at the game? I dunno.

WTF are you people on? I swear 90% of people in here waste $50 to look for the negatives in a game.

I didn't pay $50, I paid $7 to rent it. I ended up spending less than four total hours with it: 2 in same-box co-op and 2 in single play. All of the gameplay changes they made really just serve to emphasize the unrealistic parts of the first. I hated it.

I'd like to see how Live Co-Op is doing for anyone, because I was coordinating everything with my brother ON THE SAME COUCH and we were still fucking strangling each other every two minutes for the other's inexplicable dying. I'd say half the time we'd get a mission failed and never actually find out whose fault it was.

I can only imagine that in the case of Live (where yelling into your headset means guards can hear you even more easily) what Co-Op would be like. Yuck.

The whole game just feels like a disaster to me. I'm invisible in the shadows, but if I fire one pistol shot with no one looking in my direction, why the hell does every guard know my exact coordinate and somehow never miss when shooting at me? I wind up just constantly on edge until I find a medkit (and once I do, I just kill everyone and then run right back to the medkit in-between opponents to get a full recharge).

God, the game's a disgrace compared to MGS3. At least that one knows it isn't a perfect tactical espionage simulator and can laugh at itself. I feel like I'm not supposed to be having fun with SC:CT. It's like the developer is trying to send me a message that according to Chaos Theory, every fucking thing that happens to you is the result of seeming randomness (unrealistic combat) but with some true unknown pattern behind it (a linear path for each mission).

He's got it.

Our tactics are fine, my roommate is the best gamer I've ever met (he's in videogame design...not that that means anything). And he is a military nut and knows a boatload on stealth and tactics and all that jazz.

We play very seriously, like never stand up, use stealth at all times (unless we HAVE to shoot).

And we have been shot from a guard that IS NOT facing us, it's not them spinning fast, it's them shooting in one direction and us dying.

I think I've found your problem....you looking at this from one of those nerdy/survivalist’s perspective.

Just go back to reading Soldier of Fortune and buying swords off QVC.

It's a video game, it would be virtually impossible to replicate accurate human-like AI is this type of game.
MGS is even more laughable and ridiculous when it comes to stealth.

MGS atleast has a solid story with awesome characters, superb cut-scenes & sound...

More like stupid story with lame characters (read Raiden) and good looking cut scenes that leave you wanting to play the game instead of just watching it. MGS2 was a travesty IMO.

And I didn't have any of the problems the first poster had. In fact, besides the two disconnects I got early on, it's been great.
