Square Enix Undergoes Mass Layoffs As It Reorganizes to Consolidate Development in Japan

Then let me clarify: I do not give a fuck about, and have not played, a single game they were responsible for since 2016. I'd rather SE bring back Parasite Eve, Chrono Trigger, Vagrant Story, Brave Fencer Musashi, or Bushido Blade and spend whatever's left on a thousand zipper-laden wardrobes for Tetsuya Nomura.

The Square Enix Europe Catalog from 2016 On:
Deus Ex: Mankind - 2016 < - This is the one I played.
The Turing Test - 2016
Life Is Strange: Before the Storm - 2017
The Awesome Adventures of Captain Spirit - 2018
Shadow of the Tomb Raider - 2018
Life Is Strange 2 - 2018
Just Cause 4 - 2018
Battalion 1944 - 2019
Marvel's Avengers - 2020
Outriders - 2021
Life Is Strange: True Colors - 2021
Circuit Superstars - October 2021
Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy - 2021
Life Is Strange Remastered Collection - 2022 Deck Nine Games SE External Studios [153]
Hitman Sniper: The Shadows - 2022
Arena Battle Champions - 2022
PowerWash Simulator - 2022
Little Goody Two Shoes - October 2023
Life Is Strange: Double Exposure - 2024

I still can't believe they spent $100+ million on Forspoken.

It didn't happen in Japan. They laid off a bunch of westerners who likely provided little to no value in recent years.

Like, did the US people get Square in touch with Sweet Baby to add a bunch of worthless crap to Dragon Quest? Lmao… bye!

I look forward to a leaner, more focused SE going forward.
"They" is still a Japanese company

You look forward to more Ai Slop sir lol

I'm okay with this. Western influences on Japanese companies have been a disaster.
Yeah, it sucks that people lost their jobs like with any layoffs but if anybody at Square needed to lose them I feel like this is the best route.

I can't really think of many instances where western influences have really done much good for Japanese studios.

Edit: For context I mean personnel wise. The westernization of PlayStation being an example.

I meant more personal matter than subject matter. PlayStation is a perfect example.

19 games, & 5 of them are life is strange titles. that is an impressive amount of mediocrity in less than 10 years...

The company's main issue is the Japan branch's (More specifically, the Square part of Square Enix) failure to execute and deliver strong tentpole games on time. Square Enix Europe or US aren't to blame for that at all.
Just to illustrate this, this is a former Square Enix exec's thread on what's going wrong with the company.. This management team is just completely unprepared for what's happening in the gaming industry and needs to be shot out of a cannon.

The Xbox effect is already turning them profitable. 🔥

Clearly says in your cap that sales are down YOY.

They got the increased profits by cancelling projects and reducing costs, the real test starts soon. I would be shocked if Kiryu's tenure lasts for more than 5 years.

their woke trash Western executives are gone. GOOD RIDDANCE!! :messenger_smiling_horns:

I know that Square's NA headquarters has been in California for a long time, but now it is more of a liability than a strength. People out there don't know anything about what folks in the rest of the US market actually wants.

Add to that the constant recycling of folks who get laid off from one gaming firm and then hired by another... it's just an expensive mess and it doesn't have to be. It's time to get out.

Sucks for people jobs at risk. I guess they're going in on being a FF factory from now on. And Dragon Quest to a lesser extent.

On the brighter side hopefully they can turn the ship around. They've been kind of floundering the last several years (or decade) with even their best IP's. More focus in making new outstanding FF's would be start.

in this recent 5 years this are the titles that i bought at full day 1 launch price :

Romancing Saga 2 Remake becos of its fanservice and also the developer is the same as Trials of Mana 2020

FFVII Rebirth and Intergrade Twin Pack as they did not axe/cut away the costa del sol scene as my mindset is to buy the whole trilogy once it ends in 2027 for the series 30th anniversary

some other games i do not feel like giving my money due to catering to modern audiences

Edit : i hope Mr Takashi Kiryu will do a good job as similar to Kazuma Kiryu

DQ12
NieR 3
KH4
FF7R Finale

It would be great to hear more about these 4 games soon, as well as the FF9 Remake.

I would wager FF17 is in pre-production too.

BINGO

The gameplay was fine.

The mistake was allowing woke devs to make the main character for "modern audiences" and then making her completely unlikable on top of that.
LOL they even brought in "BIPOC consultants" to make sure they portrayed her "authentically" or whatever.

This may come as a shock to some, but if you have to bring in consultants to tell you the politically correct way to design your character, 99% chance it's going to be a shitty character that nobody wants to play as.

Black Girl Gamers was the name of the consultancy group SE brought in for Forspoken.

I mean they basically sold off their European operations and IP to Embracer a few years ago. Not much reason to keep more than a skeleton crew around for regional support and distribution.

Which is funny, because I know a decent number of young black women, and none of them say "fuck" every other word like the protagonist did.

All those consultants did was ghettoize the character.
