Square on PS3 - "Demo barely scratched the surface (created in 1 1/2 months)

Paraphrased because the sentence was wayyy too long ;) But confirmed that Final Fantasy is already in development and they expect it to look much better than the tech demo.

FFX producer developing PS3 Final Fantasy?

Yoshinori Kitase hints a Final Fantasy title for Sony's next-generation console is in the works, won't confirm if it’s FFXIII.

During E3 last month, Square Enix president Youichi Wata showed off a technical demonstration of how Final Fantasy VII would look if it were remade for the PlayStation 3. He then made a disclaimer that a new version of the game isn't actually being developed for the console, but assured the audience at the presentation that another Final Fantasy title will be coming to the PlayStation 3.

In the latest issue of Dengeki PlayStation, the magazine featured an interview with Final Fantasy X producer Yoshinori Kitase, who is currently working on PlayStation 2's Dirge of Cerberus: Final Fantasy VII. One of the questions raised in the interview was whether the PlayStation 3 game will be Final Fantasy XIII. As expected, Kitase declined to give an answer, saying "I can only officially state that we are making a Final Fantasy for the PS3."

However, he also suggested that he is involved as a core staff in the game’s development, stating, "As a hint, one thing I can say is that the FFVII technical PS3 demo was supervised by me, and created by Toriyama and his team staff. I'll leave it to you, but you can imagine that development [of the PS3 FF] is happening via a similar process." Motomu Toriyama was one of the directors that worked with Kitase on Final Fantasy X, and the main director for Final Fantasy X-2.

Kitase also revealed the Final Fantasy VII technical PS3 demo was actually a rush job, created in just a month and a half. “We created right before E3. I didn’t think we could do it at first, but I called Sugimoto (Koji Sugimoto, FFX’s main programmer), and we somehow made it. I believe that if we had more time, we could have made it in a higher quality. In that sense, that demo didn’t really take much advantage of the PS3’s hardware specs. But still, we were able to make something that looked that good.”

When asked if there were any more Final Fantasy VII spin-offs planned in the future, Kitase laughed, commenting, “Well, we’ll have to see. There are still characters that might be alive [From the original FFVII]”.

Oh my god............... they barely scratched the surface......with a 3d DEMO!!!!!.....it cant be, they should already had tapped the whole machine...........WEAK...

Woo Kitase is back!

Where is the "barely scratched the surface" quote?

I said paraphrased above (a bit tongue in cheek for those with no sensibilities for such things).

Read the damn post and if you don't think he's saying the've barely taken advantage of the hardware, that it was a rush job in a month and half, that the quality could have been much better doesn't equate to "barely scratched the surface" then, whatever.

That pretty much means the same thing as "barely scratched the surface".

I hope Kitase isn't making FF PS3.

argh FFX staff working on FF PS3? This is terrible news.

They do need different teams working on different FF if they are gonna get at least 3 out each generation. Don't know why you would be surprised. Especially considering the Final Fantasies made by that division were such big sellers.

What other FF have they made beside FFX and X2?

In any case, it's very, very good to hear some developer commentary regarding the PS3's capabilities with respects to the Square Demo as well as that Final Fantasy is actively being worked on already by Square.

Well Kitase has been responsible for FF7, FF8, and FFX. He also co directed FF6 and Chrono Trigger. So it makes alot of sense as to why Square would want him back in the drivers seat.

Wow that’s amazing. I just hope they don't take out the world map and the airship next time. They also need to tone down on the cut scenes.

Hehe, your right gofreak... i'd be happy with it looking close to that :D

1 1/2 months?! Wtf!...Pixar probably couldn't have made that in 1 1/2 months...I guess they already had all the models and stuff, still thats damn impressive.

I think there was enough backlash against what they did with the world map for them not to try that again. But I wouldn't count on the cutscenes being toned down too much.

I want the world map back. I loved the world map. But the random chance encounters need to go.

They should look to Zelda 2, Adventure of Link for reference of world map > battle encounters...

Zelda 2 had simple iconic sprites representing hard or easy encounters, and they travelled the map randomly. Touching them would send you into battle mode, which occured on a side on action sequence.

I agree, not sure how much more we can expect above and beyond that kind of quality. I'd be very happy with that.

Well, as awesome as Pixar is (They rock), they still haven't matched the quality of what Square produced for the humans in Final Fantasy: Spirits Within. In fact, no one has come close. It's too bad the movie was utter shite and bombed because I'd love to see more Square Films pictures.

The movie was never meant to be a final fantasy... and it shows. Big time.

Well, keep in mind most of the assests for the FF7 demo production were already completed, it was just a mater of touching them up.

\/ Plus that

Some of the models were probably taken from Advent Children.

Not a Kitase fan, but the FF7 demo has me dying to play RPGs with graphics of that quality. Finish FF12 first please :P

Can you define touching them up? It's not like they just added a few more textures to the existing character and vehicle models... oh do you mean Advent Children assets?

Nice to see some headroom for PS4 ;)

You can actually see polygon edges around Cloud's sleeveless shoulder in the PS3 demo..it's certainly not "CGI" perfect. /nitpick

Still beautiful though, obviously!

So actual FF games will look better than this? :)

Well, I'd hope they'd display more characters on screen at a time, for a start... (just like the PS2 FF tech demo, in fact...)

wow, when you see them side to side, all the imperfections in the ff7 demo start to show... all of a sudden the hair doesnt look as hairy and the shirt doesnt look as shirty

The CG Creations of FF7 contained models and textures and such from the original game FMV's. Howver, I neglected to think of the Advent Children models that were ripe for the picking. Combine the original FMV Data with the updated models and it should have been a bit easier to put together.

the hair in the cg is much better also...

its getting harder and harder to tell the difference (yay!)

Oh for sure, there's plenty more. The hair, the skin, the clothing all looks much better in the CG.

Certainly getting closer, yeah. Again, in-game, I'd be ecstatic with graphics of the quality in the ps3 demo. Transition from any CG to in-game should be far far less jarring this gen.

Have a look at the original FF7 intro again.

You'll see this tech demo is in the order of several magnitudes better looking. At least in terms of the character models.

I've seen people explain this to you like a dozen times in the past, yet you insist on bashing Kitase every time his name is brought up. No offense, but you're either really dense or extremely forgetful. :D
