Squeenix Announces Code Age (PS2)

Square Enix reveals new project

Code Age currently in development for unannounced platforms; new title is under the creative direction of Yusuke Naora.
TOKYO--On the bonus DVD that accompanied today's release of Dragon Quest VIII, publisher Square Enix unveiled what appears to be a new game. Apparently titled Code Age, Square Enix is calling the title a "new concept brand."

Few details are known about the title except that it's under the direction of Yusuke Naora. Naora has worked on a number of Square Enix titles, including Chrono Trigger, The Bouncer, and Final Fantasy VII, VIII, and X.

Naora gained some notoriety as the character designer for Unlimited Saga, and he recently worked as the art director for Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children.

A peek at Code Age's trailer reveals the title appears to use cell shading, similar to what was featured in Unlimited Saga (and the soon to be released Romancing SaGa: Minstrel Song).

The trailer begins with a scene set at sea, switches to an aerial view, then shows several character shots. The narration in the trailer translates as follows:

Deep, deep into the sea where light cannot reach,

The environment is severe beyond imagination.

One fish evolved its eyes to seek for light.

Another fish evolved its mouth to seek food and to survive.

Mankind escaped from evolution by crawling out of the water and reshaping its environment.

Everyone was dreaming of a bright future,

But that was abandoned by a new world order.

This is a story about people that were once human.

This is a story about people that continued to be human.

Code Age.

[Our] heart was screaming,

Evolve if you want to survive.

[Our] instincts were screaming,

Leave the strongest gene.

Show off your style.

"Deep, deep into the net where rational discussion cannot reach

The defensiveness is severe beyond imagination

One fanboy evolved its eyes to seek for flames.

Another fanboy evolved its mouth to talk shit and to troll.

Gamers escaped from evolution by crawling into the past and extolling a 2D environment.

Everyone was dreaming of rosy nostalgia,

But that was abandoned by a Three-D order.

This is a story about gamers that were once unbiased.

This is a story about gamers that continued to be unbiased.

Gaming Age.

[Our] heart was screaming,

Evolve if you want the new games.

[Our] instincts were screaming,

Be a graphics whore.

My cock is bigger than yours."

And on another note entirely, this sounds interesting. I look forward to seeing screens.

It's a PC game. They were showing stuff on it back at TGS.

Edit: Uhh... maybe I'm wrong. I was confusing this with Crossgate.

Yeah, Code Age they haven't said shit about. If you look it up in the USPTO database, the trademarks cover games and every imaginable spinoff thereof. Personally, I think they're trying to do a Yu-Gi-Oh-style multimedia phenomenon type deal.

No screens?

Already sold by the time time the article mentions Naora. Big fan of his work, can't wait to see this:)

Polymorphism™! Hey, if turning FFVII into a brand works (which it's obviously doing), why not take it to the next level?

It's kind of interesting that they're letting an artist slip into a directing role, but they did the same thing with Nomura (from character artist to the boss of Kingdom Hearts) and that went pretty well. Financially, anyway ^_^

All I could think about when I saw the whole fish rising out of the water and evolving into Humans was... PLEASE let this be an EVO sequel!!

Except Naora's recent work is pretty cool, not so bad that you'd rather suck on assy dingleberry encrusted donkey balls for five hours, like Nomura's.

Nomura sure does seem to polarize opinions.

you were saying?

i think the romasaga minstrel song video playing at TGS is the first game where the characters have actually sparked revulsion in me.

Misleading thread title.

Best thing about the DVD that came with DQ8 was the two back-to-back FFXII videos. The KH2 video was pretty good too. Disappointed by the lack of Dirge of Cerberus video though - did they just forget to put it on the disc?

Square Enix doesn't just make games for Sony anymore. In fact, Square Enix enters into much more publishing agreements with Nintendo, where we see Nintendo publishing Square Enix games.

All GBA and the one GC project have all been published by Nintendo. In comparison, Square Enix stopped letting Sony publish their titles after the first 20 game deal on the Playstation One.

I find it very aggravating that people still perpetuate the myth that Square Enix is only loyal to Sony.

1 PSP (FF VII ARPG) Square Enix project vs at least 4 for the DS (New Secret of Mana, FF Crystal Chronicles, Egg Monster Hero, FF III).

Considering that this Code Age is being advertised with DQ VIII, it's likely it is for PS2, but not necessarily.

This is a rundown of what's on the DVD.

PS2: DQ5 (2:52)
GBA: Slime Mori Mori (1:02)
PS2/Win: FFXI Promathia (1:59)
PS2/Win: Front Mission Project (3:34)
Win: Everquest 2 (11:11)
Win: CrossGate Power Up Kit 3 (2:04)
Win: Fantasy Earth (2:20)
PS2: FFXII (6:13)
PS2: Full Metal Alchemist 2 (2:17)
PS2: DQ & FF in Itadaki Street Special (2:07)
PS2: Radiata Stories (1:54)
PS2/NDS: Hanjuku Hero 4 / Egg Monster Hero (3:52)
PS2: Romancing SaGa Minstrel Song (3:00)
GBA: Kingdom Hearts Chain of Memories (3:02)
PS2: Kingdom Hearts 2 (3:37)
Mobile: Before Crisis - FF7 (2:12)
DVD: FF7 Advent Children (2:27)
???: Code Age (2:01)
---: Square Enix Merchandise (1:32)
---: Young GanGan, new Square Enix comic like Jump (0:32)
---: Full Metal Alchemist Festival (0:37)
---: Full Metal Alchemist movie (0:15)

I'm not gonna rip anything because someone like Gahiggidy will just moan about the rip quality or something :/

Since you aren't going to rip anything, does the Code Age video show anything of the actual game or is it just text with music?

No reason to believe this isn't coming to the PS2. Square saves hack work for the Cube. CC, anyone? Remakes and poor use of licensing. Again -- CC, anyone? Square's flagship franchise is still exclusive to the PS2/P. That's loyalty.

Except for FFI & II on the GBA and FFIII on the DS - no sign of them for PSP yet...
I'm thinking it will either be PC or next-gen. If it were PS2, they'd show us some screenshots and the game should be at least some way down the development road. Lack of screenshots implies a really distant release (like FFVII:CC on the PSP for example). It may even be a Xenon-based game.

Very nice opening. The characters looks nice too. I hope they plaster his art on everything like they do with Nomura and Hyun-tae Kim's. Another game I cant' wait to play, or, at least buy the artbook.

WOw, Kingdom Hearts looks very good also. It needs more Final Fantasy though.

I'd bet on PS2 or PSP.

Why release a cel-shaded game as your first "next-gen" game? I don't think developers will abandon that look, but I think it will be more sophisticated. Also, FFXI was released after the PS2 was released and did extremely well in sales. DQVII was also released after the PS2 for the PSOne.

It's a tremendous time to reap some profit off of a huge userbase.
