Star Fox Assault Hype Thread

I don't have the game or anything, but I have the suspicion that whoever rented it might not be aware that the L/R buttons on the GCN controller are analog.

It would make sense that if you pressed the L button in only slightly, the Arwing would tilt slightly and be held there, and pushing it in further will tilt it further until you 'click' the button and cause the Arwing to barrel roll completely. But that's just if I made the game. :)

Me too, in fact it's what I wrote in my E3 impressions:
One big change in the controls is that the shoulder buttons no longer let you tip the Arwing on its right or left axis. Instead, the R-trigger is brake, while the L-trigger is roll attack (barrel roll). Don't like it. I'd have preferred they moved brake to the X button (what's up with this 'land' function anyway?), so that it's near the Y-button boost, and had left the triggers as they were in the N64 game. Then it would be even more intuitive: tapping on the L or R triggers would tip the ship in that direction for flying through narrow spaces and avoiding enemy fire, and yanking them the way down to a digital click would send the Arwing into a barrel role on either side. Makes better sense, no?
But from the GameFAQs thread, it's obvious that the poster had the instruction manual and he even quoting sections of it in response to questions. Tilting simply isn't in the final game. For some reason Nintendo/Namco is going with an inferior control scheme to one regular ol' gamers like you & me could dream up.

If that's the case, then I could use a million crying faces right now. Part of the ace flying was the feeling from having to tilt and brake or tilt and boost! Jeez.

Good news: There is a control option that apparently allows you to tilt.

Bad news: You sacrifice the intuitiveness of the barrel roll for it.

And if the default scheme doesn't even provide for a tilt, the levels probably aren't designed for it anyway. :(

Sounds like there's a fair amount of replay value. If the foot/tank missions are not complete shit, I may have to grab this sooner rather than later.

Didn't Star Fox Adventures use that set-up? I didn't care much for those controls. Then again, those Arwing stages were pathetic, so the controls may not have been the problem.
