Star Wars: KOTOR - need GAF opinion

Still haven't touched KOTOR for some odd reason (probably because I hate Star Wars and because of that ignored a [superb] game), it gets a neat average score of 95% on GameRankings: http://www.gamerankings.com/htmlpages2/556553.asp?q=star wars kotor

worth it? overrated?

Since I have nothing to play at this moment (damn Sony! why did you delay SotC) I'm willing to pick up GOTY 2003, but first I'd like to hear the opinion of my fellow gaffers.

What about the battle-system? What about the story? (I heared it has one of the best twists ever seen in a videogame) Music?

It's excellent. The battlesystem is smoth but turnbased which I enjoyed. Story is cool since it takes the Star Wars universe 1000 years into the past. Long load times though on the Xbox. Music is um... forgettable since I can't remember it at all.

The load times aren't so bad. This fucking game is incredible though. You have to buy it.

The story, music, and voices are all great. Buy it as soon as possible. The 2nd one is pretty good, but not as great as the first (Both are must-buys though).

It's definitely worth it.

The game drags during the first planet, but then it really takes off. I enjoyed the battle system for the most part, and the story is top-notch. One thing that really needs to be said is that the voice acting and dialogue are absolutely brilliant.

You have to stick with it for 10 or so hours, after that you'll be lucky if you can put it down before the end, and its a 30 hour + game.

The amount of loading screens that seems to be present in all of Biowares games is maddening. For me it's one of the biggest drawbacks because you literally spend half the game staring at the damn loading screen.

What gets me is that it's not that technically demanding compared to other titles out on the system.

It took me 2 years to get interested in it as well. I finished it in September and once I had gotten into the game a bit (third island I think ) I was hooked.
Excellant game. Loved it.
I can understand how it won game of the year.

It's a great game for a Star Wars fan for sure, but if you "hate Star Wars" as you say, why would you want to play it? The characters, settings, items, etc. are straight out of the Star Wars Universe.

I've been told not to believe your game impressions. :D

Also, I would like to say, this game's story kicks the shit out of Episodes 1, 2 & 3 stories IMO.

though, I have a pretty decent PC I still prefer buying it on xbox

playing with the xbox controller & sitting much more comfortable > shorter loading times.

I am in the same boat. I absoutely hate Star Wars and I am sure that's why I haven't played KOTOR.

Why would we consider playing? Great reviews and great work of mouth. I always assumed that the game isn't great just because of the Star Wars theme and content.

I'm on Manaan now, it is getting a little tedious with all the side-quests and dialogue you have to wade through. At first, it was a blast, and combat still is, but all the routine stuff I have to do upon reaching a new planet is getting old. I only have one planet left after this, am I that far from the end?

Maybe it's the contrast with the DS, games like Castlevania are so easy to pick up and play lately compared to something like KOTOR.

Great light BioWare RPG. Somewhat better than BG1, much worse than BG2, also MUCH better than its sequel (K2).

I'm pretty positive that the huge amount of praise and hype comes from people who never touched a proper PC RPG, but oh well, same goes to Halo.

Anyway:

KOTOR GET!
Manaan planet graphics, music and the overall atmosphere rule. So does Star Forge (spelling?).

I fell for the same hype I see in this thread a year ago. :p

The core of the game is pretty poor, but the stuff on the surface helps you overlook it. :p
The 'dungeons' which make up most of the game are pretty boring. I enjoyed the game more for the superficial stuff (star wars theme, customization, choose-your-path stuff).

It's impossible for you to say anything remotely related to xbox without being an idiot. We get it already. I'm sure the countless reviewers and all of us in the thread have never played another PC rpg or ...shooters? wtf.

btw, to the thread, I don't particularly like Star Wars and still really like it. It stands strong apart from any love of the setting.

As I said earlier, I highly recommend the game, but for me personally, I can't see myself being interested in a game if the core subject matter is not something I have an interest in, even if the reviews are high. For instance, I have no interest in WWE Pro Wrestling, thus I can't see myself wanting to play a wrestling game. The orginal poster stated that he "hated" Star Wars, and I'd just hate to see him waste his time and money on a game that may not appeal to him at all if he hates the core subject matter so much. If that makes sense? :D

All you poeple whining about large amounts of dialogue don't KNOW what really is large amounts of dialogue. Anyone who has played Planescape: Torment would easily say KOTOR is childsplay in that regard.

Well you read a lot quicker then if you had to listen to people say it. Torment would be a disaster with VO in my opinion.

I'm sorry but Xbox destroyed PC gaming as I loved it. I'll never forget it and I'll never forgive it. That's the one and only reason of my irrational and sometimes idiotic hatred for all things Xbox. This will never change and it can only get worse with 360 see id software moving away from the PC.

Feel free to add me to your ignore list or learn to skip my posts. I can't help it.

But let's be honest for a moment, KOTOR isn't the be all end all western RPG some of you are making it.

If the voice actors were top notch then I wouldn't be a problem. But otherwise, yes, that would have been a disaster. It's bad enough the damn aliens speak in KOTOR (even though it adds a touch of realism. I was about ready to throw my Xbox out the window listening to all the Wookies and Twi'leks).

cool game, but grossly overrated. The combat isn't great. It's too linear. You can only level to 20? :lol The maun character has no character. Worth a play though.

The game is not overrated in the least. It was well worth the original $50 and you can get it now for like $20. If you're a fan of RPGs you'd be insane to not try it at that price.

For instance, I have no interest in WWE Pro Wrestling, thus I can't see myself wanting to play a wrestling game.

Ah you're missing out then. I hate, hate, HATE "real" wrestling but totally loved No Mercy and a few of the Raw games. I was stubborn about it, thinking that I couldn't like a game with a subject matter I disliked, but man was I wrong.

In the game's defense KOTOR is a very different experience than a typical Star Wars game or movie. The alien races and philosophies (i.e. The Force) are the same, but it just feels like a very unique sci-fi experience. Although I gotta admit I did lose interest about halfway through. That first planet takes way too long to get through.

I found the game to be a dissapointment. I liked bioware games, I love star wars, I was sure I'd love KOTOR, but there was jsut something off about it. The game lacked.. personality? It felt stale and I just didn't care about things in the game. Plus, I'm use to doing more with my characters in bioware games and KOTOR felt limited in tht way and the battle system isn't smooth. It's not a bad game though.

I loved it until I got to a grassy plain on the first planet and it became unplayable due to slowdown. Must be some computer glitch that wasn't fixed in the patch. It was a lot of fun though.

Dantooine, yeah I had that too

There's an INI fix that you have to do (DisableVertexShaders), and it went right away

Slightly overrated, but still excellent. At the price it's no doubt going for these days you'd be insane not to if you've ever considered picking it up.

QFT.

I have a friend who's a huge RPG fan, but absolutely loathes all SW-related things with a passion. (Her father's an SW geek, which probably has more than a little bit to do with that. :p ) I raved to her about KotOR, but at the time she only owned a PS2 and a Cube. I suggested she rent an Xbox and the game - the PC version was still only a glimmer on the horizon at that point - because it was that good. She took my advice... and enjoyed the game so much, despite the SW theme, that she actually went out and bought an Xbox and a copy of the game so she could finish it at her leisure. (Nowadays, she mainly uses it to play 2D fighters. Go figure.)

So, yeah. KotOR = teh system seller. :D

Its a masterpiece, my favourite game of all time and the best RPG i've ever played. Nothing can touch its brilliance, nothing

The original is probably the second best game this gen behind Metroid Prime. The second had some technical issues and was slow to start, but man does it get really good towards the end. Great branching storyline that had a satisfying conclusion.. really looking forward to an eventual 3rd title.

My personal favorite game of this gen. The haters are people like demi, so that should tell you all that you really need to know. He liked Advent Rising and has webbed feet.

Probably my favorite RPG of the generation.. with that said most of the complaints in this thread are absolutely valid (of the xbox version)

There is slowdown/stuttering
First planet is slow.. it takes a bit to get going (Manaan seemed to drag a bit for me also)
Loading times LONG - this doesn't normally bother me because you don't load that often until you go to play the mini-game :(

If any of those items bothers you a lot then I wouldn't suggest it. Otherwise you should definately go for it. Sadly, while I tried and tried I could never bring myself to play through the 2nd.. :( I kept trying but it would never pull me in.

great game, but a tiny bit overrated.

after a while the quest structure for each section starts to get a bit predictable. the dungeons are weak, and the combat gets sort of boring (still fun, but not as deep as it seems at first).

really good story though, and towards the end it does a great job of making you feel like a super powered jedi.

9.2 for me.

if you ask gaf for game opinions you'll only end up playing 1 or 2 games a year.

And those 1-2 games will suck too.

Anyway, KOTOR is pretty cool. I admittedly lost interest at some point and have found it hard to come back to since I've forgotten a lot of stuff, but it's the first Western RPG that made an impression on me. It's not OMG mindblowing stuff, but it's pretty well done and worth a shot. I'm not even a SW fan myself but found myself easily enjoying the storylines.
