In all 9001 recent star wars threads this series is mentioned at one point or another. Some of us think it's has some of the Best STAR WARS content. Others simply dismiss it as "EU Fanfiction".

With some time before The Force Awakens hits and the Star Wars thirst at an all time high, why not give a chance to this series or give it a rewatch?

In this thread you must mark all spoilers for those who decide to give it a try for the first time.

The Clone Wars was heavily overseen by George Lucas, he wrote almost all of the different stories. With Dave Filoni in charge of giving life to these ideas.

For many. This series truly reachs its highs until season 3 so you might want to check this guide to watch only the best parts of the series and avoid some comedic fillers if they're not your thing.
The Plot
Set between Attack of Clones and Revenge of The Sith the series narrates the various battles of the Clone Wars.

The series starts with Yoda deciding that in order for Anakin to learn detachment from loved ones he should train a padawan who will eventually leave his side. The young girl Ahsoka Tano is chosen to be Skywalkers apprentice.

The series also explores the life of Clone troopers. Giving them faces, character, arcs and some amazing battles.

Cancellation and Legacy
Since George Lucas was pumping almost a million dollars of his own money per episode to get some great quality the clone wars series had to be cancelled when Disney took over as it would be too expensive to make without George. Many unused scripts were later adapted into comics and novels.

In it's place REBELS was created with a lower budget and set between episodes 3 and 4.

With Filoni as the director. Filoni took this as a chance to slowly transform Rebels into a continuation of many of the plots TCW left without resolution. And a way to bridge the PT and OT more tightly.

Discuss!!!
Also I might have a star wars obsession problem going on. But I can quit any time!!!

EDIT: I should mention both series are canon

I've said it in the Star Wars OT a number of times but Clone Wars has some of my favorite Star Wars moments of all time. Particularly the end of season five.

Rebels is turning out nicely too. It's a great time to be a Star Wars fan.

Ezra grew on me by the end of the first season. I'm still not a fan of Zeb though.

Zeb is by far the worst character. Even if Sabine is under utilized I want to learn more about her.

But Zeb fails at being the Chewie of the series. Big. Time. He's humor is really not my thing. Chopper gets the comic relief far better.

Oh thank goodness for this thread, I spent a good 30 minutes last night trying to find something I could bump that wasn't too old.

I just started watching 2008 Clone Wars two weeks ago and I can't believe just how crazy good it is. I'm halfway through season 4 now; I finished the Umbaran arc last night and all I could say is wow, that is some insanely good TV.

Gonna try to power through the rest of the series this weekend. I watched Rebels s1 a few months ago but decided to stop (s1 ending)
since Ahsoka showed up and everyone flipped their shit while I had no idea who she was.
Wish I had watched CW first ;_;

Also, pretty sure this show has made me definitely decide to join the 501st Legion as a CT one day

Regarding Rebels, Kanan is my main man <3

Edited accidental spoiler, really sorry and thanks Fj0823

Are the Tartakovsky Clone Wars still canon? They should be.

They're not. I think some parts of it were cherry picked into canon though. Could be wrong, but I believe the new ultimate guide mentions events similar to the end of the series where Shaak-Ti was charged with protecting the chancellor during the Separatist invasion of Coruscant.

As a fan of Star Wars: Clone Wars ('03), does the art style or CG ever improve? It just looks so ugly. :

Yes. The CG improves tremendously on season 3. When George's perfectionism kicked in and he started to pump his money on the project

The art remains largely the same though.

Also Boogie you should really reaaaally mark that spoiler about "Fulcrum" in rebels.

I hope Sabine gets utilized better this season. I'm looking forward to her spotlight episode
(s?). The mandalorian episodes of Clone Wars have always been some of my favorites.

To be honest. As cool as that arc was. Im not a fan of "memory wipe bye" endings. It was definitely good though.

Yeah I thought was really well done and added to the mythology. But yeah they should have let it ride.

It made the nerds so mad though, boards were hot for weeks afterwards

The only one to have their memory wiped was Anakin regarding the future that he was shown. When everyone woke up, they all retained memories of their adventure, but dismissed it as a hallucination brought on by the force. Anakin mentions this to Yoda during the last arc.

Aw, yeah!

Oh, wait.

Oh.

This is not meant to be a slight against the original CW series, but I'm perplexed as to how the same people that watched the 2D cartoon could find the character designs in TCW to be ugly when the ones in CW looked just as ugly, if not moreso.

Really loved clone wars. I was not a fan of movies but clone wars made me a fan of star wars universe. Rebels on the other hand is alright Nothing special or memorable about it

Already got Tartakovsky posts. *eyeroll*

Going to start rewatching TCW soon. I liked the whole series minus Padme episodes. I even enjoyed the infamous Jar Jar/Droids episodes, but that's probably because I'm crazy. However my favorite arc is probably Obi-Wan and Mandalore. Really opens up his character and Mandalorians are bad ass.

Then you have Hondo. Oh lovable Hondo.

Wish I had watched CW first ;_;

I just finished up Clone Wars a few days ago - pretty much the same situation as you. Watched Rebels because A) heard good things and B) Greg Weisman, saw that ending hook and was like - yup, guess I have to watch Clone Wars now.

SO glad I did; it has a rough start, but man does it get good. A few of my favorite arcs and episodes:

- Ryloth Arc, Season One (Just a really good war story, told from a few different angles. Particularly liked the stuff with the two Clones and the Twi'lek orphan.)
- The Deserter, Season Two (Again, awesome war story. The stuff that plays with the Clones, their individuality and free will, that sort of thing really stuck with me - it's the highest concept that the series plays with, I think.)
- Everything Mandalore (Satine and Obi-Wan, the Death Watch, when Maul gets involved, holy shit, amazing from top to bottom. Definitely some of their strongest work. Their take on Obi-Wan, a loyal Jedi who is just constantly burned by his faithfulness, is tragic in the best way, and absolutely strengthens his characters in the rest of the series.)
- The Citadel Arc, Season Three (Love how brutal this one gets, and I love that they showed off a pre-Empire Tarkin. Shows how a guy like him can be a "hero" just as easily as a "villain" - it all depends on who's in charge.)
- Padawan Lost, Season Three (The best Ahsoka episodes, I think. Putting her through the ringer, showing Anakin's influence for better and for worse.)
- Slaver Arc, Season Four (I love, LOVE any excuse to see Anakin's dark side. He's a decent guy with terrible, terrible baggage, just waiting for an excuse to lash out... the later Clovis episodes do this excellently.)
- Onderon Arc, Season Five (Great war stuff + great Ahsoka stuff = great episodes. I think it really convincingly handles the romantic undertones between all of the characters.)
- Ahsoka Framed Arc, Season Five (I mean, this one goes without saying. That ending... ugh, my heart.)

Looking back, I think Season Five is easily their best work. Except for that dumb frog general arc (which was a fun one-off but really stretched too far), every single episode is in the upper echelon. Some of the best episodes of TV animation in the past few years, and that's saying something.

Currently watching through Season 5, Cad Bane is a badass and was more competent than Grievous, Ventress and Dooku combined.

This is not meant to be a slight against the original CW series, but I'm perplexed as to how the same people that watched the 2D cartoon could find the character designs in TCW to be ugly when the ones in CW looked just as ugly, if not moreso.

The CW series design were OK, they were just drawn in Gendy's style

Love Clone Wars after S4, even if there's still a lot of goofy shit.

Rebels is disappointing. I want to like it so bad but I hate the blue hair kid and pretty much everyone besides Freddie Prinze Jr. and the alien lady. There's also some really egregious rehashing of beats and music from the OT. Just straight up hijacking lines from the Empire Strikes Back and having characters who shouldn't be saying them say them, and then quoting themes from the old scores where they don't fit. Fuck off with that shit.

One of those shows that starts kind of lame and gets way better as it goes.

Ahsoka Tano is the best character added to the Star Wars canon in a long damn time. Was glad when she showed up in Rebels.

They could have skipped all the Jar Jar Binks episodes and that kind of bullshit, though. Especially in the last season. You telling me in the last season of the show before Episode 3 I have to deal with a multiple episode team up between Jar Jar Binks and mace Windu?

What? It's Star Wars.
I absolutely love that series as much as anyone else. It's amazing, but it's not TCW/Rebels and I really get tired of seeing it name dropped for no reason other than people trying to be clever.

I am way overdue for rewatching that cartoon though, but I only own the DVDs. :(

Are you all implying that Dexter Jettster wasn't the best new Star Wars character?

does he actually appear in the clone wars show at all?

I won't lie, when I first learned they were giving Anakin an apprentice I cringed. Going into the series she was the character I cared the absolute least about. By the end it was the complete opposite.

Her character goes through a huge swing over the course of the series. I didn't like her at first either but she changes so much by the end and becomes such a great character.

Oh hey. If you're going to watch Clone Wars, you should know that they did a dumb thing and didn't put the stories out in chronological order. It tends to skip back and forth across the timeline for some reason.

I've always thouvht that although the original 2003 Clone Wars cartoon wasn't "officially" canon that because the actual canon material never conflicted that we could still regard it aa actually happening. Did the later cartoons contradict the original series at all? I would think Filoni would have a bit of reverence for the cartoon considering how amazing it is.

Dexter himself doesn't appear, but a jedi general of the same species appears in one of the series' best arcs during season 4.
