Starbound Beta Thread - Begins December 4th!

Played a bit last night, started a new character. Got past the first boss and bought my first teleporter. Now to start building up a colony.

Loving it all over again though, it's fantastic.

Yeah I just restarted like 2-3 days ago. I love the pacing now and the progression even jumped a bit better with the last update with the whole upgrade pieces rather than hunting down random ores.

I remember playing it back at launch, without Quests and all that stuff and it felt like Terraria - which was totally okay, but now it's got this really lovely progression and clearer direction for new characters (and particularly new players).

Been great watching it evolve.

If anyone was on the server in the last, I dunno, hour or so, looks like they pushed another update. Server is updated, so if you can't seem to get on, you might have to update your client.

With the weapon tweaks turrets aren't that spectacular in killing all mobs.

Try to get guard colonists, they do a pretty good job clearing things out and they respawn. Add a few turrets on top of it all then you got a veritable fortress of a colony lol.

On one of the Chucklefish streams they used Glitch weapon-racks, and armored statues to spawn a glitch guard, don't really know about the other races.

Building a colony has been pretty fun.

I figured out that using lunar base lockers got me lunar mining guards, or at least I assume they are guards since they carry guns.

Yeah, I had a colonist get cornered by a critter last night so I added some hovering drones to the outdoor areas and I don't think anything is getting in now.

I have not played for months and had a nice play session last night. They improved the game a fuck ton. I did not expect quests, villages and npc vendors. My only complaint right now: tooltips on hover need to be improved greatly and need an autoloot keybind for chests.

Stayed up to about 3am playing Starbound and watching MGS V streams. Had some great fun.

Yep, it's a good game now. I'm personally not playing until launch, I don't want to ruin the "1.0" experience for me, so I'm waiting. I listen to the OST a lot though and I play for a bit now and then just for a little bit of fun.

Looking very forward to when it's complete!

I was going to jump back in whenever the new stable was secure, but reading that they're working on combat next makes me want to wait.

Racial "combat" related stuff gets you guards of that race. Also if you use say very good beds/doors like impervium then the guards will spawn with gear of that type.

So right now I got impervium equipped floran guards at my colony. Everything dies!

Spent last night exploring a few Eccentric Star systems. Want to settle my Floran on one of those gorgeous Tropical worlds.

Is there any issue with getting Colonies/NPC's to spawn on these worlds, considering they're Radioactive?

Worth trying but I am guessing yeah. If they do die, they just respawn anyway and you can recover the deed to use again if necessary. If you pick up a deed they warp away but it is nice to try and mess around til you get the tenant you want if you are aiming for something specific like a guard.

I think my home world is probably the most wire intensive on the server.

Turrets, switches, some crazy elaborate setups like my ocean plug and now added safe corridor for my npcs

Glad you guys are having fun with the latest update!

For those that haven't played yet, Starbound is 15% off on Steam for the next 48 hours!

My npcs are a tad weird...

One likes to jump into the ocean.

One guard likes to sleep in another npcs bed

The npc who's bed gets stolen by said guard tends to be wandering very far from its room

One npc tends to get hurt by fire somehow

The other npcs are somewhat normal

NPC AI is kind of crazy right now. Going to the Outpost is rather distracting :lol

Is anyone else experiencing massive slowdowns since the last update? Randomly my frame rate will drop to 15-20 fps even in my spaceship. I was problem-free before this. Awesome update otherwise though.

Yup, have you tried running the 64-bit OpenGL experimental version? That runs a lot better for me. The stock modes are horrible though.

No char wipe or planet wipes this patch so people shouldn't lose anything.

Safest way is to have both a planet and ship that is fully decked out. If a char wipe occurs the planet is still around and vice versa. It's really rare for a double char and planet wipe

I should have worded better, by lost I mean it's not marked on the star chart anymore and I remember being a teleport option to your homeworld but it's gone too.

They replaced the direct teleport to home world option with bookmarks and teleporters a few updates ago. What you can do is go to your Starbound saves directory, in the Universe directory, and find the .world files with the biggest sizes. The bigger sized files are that way because they have the most changes from the originally generated world. The first two sets of numbers in the file name will correspond to the planet's coordinates. Hopefully that helps.

I thought they just didn't do character wipes at all anymore?

It seems crazy to me that a 970 and 4790K can't run this thing at 1440p@60fps. New update seems cool but the occasionally choppy performance at 1080p is kinda putting me off of this.

Try 64 bit becuase I get over 60 with a GTX670 and ab I7 3770k. Not 1440p. but I am streaming it lol.

I'll have to look at it later. I had bookmarked my planet, but all my bookmarks are gone.

zomg, Dirt Trap Doors look exactly like dirt o.O

And hunting pressure plates just make my live easier in saving while making wire stuff. A 3d printed pressure plate goes a long long way

Sorry the server was down a few hours. I changed out some hardware on my PC. It is now quieter and cooler. Woohoo.

Server back up.

To my understanding this has always been a post 1.0 PC release thing so while the game is in Early-Access there is little point expecting a release on any other platform.

Back at E3, Starbound was one of the games they announced for the Win10/XBone Game Preview program (ie their Early Access program)

I'm getting a 700+ MB Starbound patch today with no patch notes in the News section.

If any Chucklefish people are reading this, pretty please drop something in the patch notes section when you update and I will be super happy. :D

After only trying it when beta first came out, I started to play again. I've had the game BSOD/freeze my computer several times already. Any one else having these issues with Windows 10? It keeps erasing my bookmarks which totally fucking sucks.
