Starbound Beta Thread - Begins December 4th!

Looking at the Wiki, it looks like you craft it at the Sewing Machine (Upgraded Spinning wheel), but... that doesn't seem right, so possibly a bug?

Ugh, upgraded? I need titanium for that, and I need watering can to grow cotton for better gear.

Seems like a mistake.

Many workbenches have tabs of the different kinds of things you can craft on them. Dyes are on a little colored bottle on the Spinning Wheel workbench.

Its been forever, but with 1.0 around the corner, I feel I can finally sit down and play this game proper with all the changes. Only 12 days to go.

Yep, I've been waiting for 1.0 to play again for so long now. I mean I already have over 77 hours played just in the betas, but NOW I'll really be able to sink my teeth into the game!

LOL

Same here, I got a lot of playtime just in the betas.
Stop playing waiting for this.

I volunteered to do the Official Thread 3 years ago (!), I'll will create it on the day of release, as per the official rules on OTs.
HA, congrats on finally being able to get it going. Also, add some of those biomes you created in the OT. They look fantastic.

There's always the wooden one, though if you're focused on agriculture that's probably too slow. For what it's worth, you can upgrade your manipulator to collect water and as long as there's a background tile to "click against" you can dump water directly onto your tilled soil to water it (just make sure it has somewhere to run off). That should work until you get sprinklers (produced at the upgraded Foraging table)

Oh, I know, I was just saying that's what the wiki page says; "CRAFTED AT: Sewing Machine." That's all.

I can't wait to read your OT. I'm even more excited about it than the game release itself. :D

It won't be as good as the GW2 one, but I have some ideas. I want to avoid anything too graphic-intense since people will need to visit it for Discord / Server info. Probably just outline the basics and go from there.

I'd honestly like to have a gallery of stuff people made, but without some way of automating it I know I'd forget it exists and it wouldn't get updated.

So no one else with FPS issues then? :P

Edit: The Chucklefish logo continues to scare the fuck out of me. That laugh is creepy when it sneaks up on you :lol. Also there's definitely some vsync going on here, tons of mouselag in unstable, none in stable. So how on earth did double-buffered vsync get
enabled?

Edit #2: Well, I fixed it by setting "Vsync always off" for Starbound Unstable, FPS still tops out at 60, but it's a constant 60 now at least :). Liking the changes made to the UI a lot, even if they take a bit getting used to.

I'm playing the unstable version and have no idea what the objective is once I've landed on the planet. It's asking me to find some source of power, but giving me no guidelines what that means. I just spent an hour digging to the center of the planet looking for anything and got killed by random lava in an instant, losing all my items. I don't want to do that again, unless I need to.

IIRC the quest message has a compass that points to where this energy source is.

If there is, I'm not seeing it. I also can't figure out how to see a map either so maybe there's something I'm missing.

Edit: I think I found it now. The compass is pretty vague. From the direction it's pointing, it looked like it was an indicator to click on the quest box. Thanks!

So what do I have to do to try the nightlies?

It seens the 1.0 version is already on the unstable branch. Not sure how "final" the version is, but its pretty bug free for me, and has all the new additions like the intro missions, and quest structure so far.

So apparently me messing with vsync had nothing to do with anything :lol. I just get perfect framerates in full screen, it's all over the place in windowed, but mostly rests at 30. It's so damn good though, hype for some 1.0 multi with y'all once it lands.

Wish I could figure out how to make it run at 60 in full screen too. Also is there a way to make the hud bigger?

Edit: Ah, the vsync weirdness is fixable in the config file :).

I'm getting a weird issue in full screen where my cursor hits invisible walls inside a small section of the screen.

Just got the pixel printer... time to start my house.

Also, the whole scan system... just so good. I used to item whore the hell out of this game. My old character had a building with like 10 of those high capacity containers just maxed out with furniture. This system is so much better for me. Less inventory to manage = much better.

Not wanting to deter people from playing... but for those of you who are suddenly playing it again (or for the first time), wouldn't it be better to wait for 1.0 to actually hit?

Haha, I've been playing it on and off again since I bought it :P. Wouldn't bother me personally if I have to wipe again once 1.0 hits for real, especially since you can just skip the intro mission entirely. But yeah others should totally hold off and wait for the stable release, for sure. It's unstable for a reason.

I'm playing, but only to get a feel for how the progression system works now so I can explain it in the OT =p

Right click the unstable build in steam, properties, there is a tab for betas, and a drop down menu to opt in.

If it's more complicated than that, I dunno. I haven't tried opting into the nightly updates but that seems to be how.

It's not there.

Finished the single player. Man, it's a pretty solid single player. Definitely much better than Terraria's. Well Terraria doesn't really have any.

There are two different watering cans. Just make the basic wooden one. They do they same thing afaik, or at least both get the job done.

Yeah I noticed the wood one right after I made the one that needed dye. I'm blind.

How "complete" the single player experience feels all around? Im on the
Scan Hyotl clues
Mission so far.

i remember when they said the game will be out for the end of year 2013 (or was 2014) even when everyone knew that was a lie

Honestly, its been so long that I no longer care about playing the game anymore, even when it does hit 1.0. The time of me getting hype for Starbound has long since passed. It's why I dont really like getting EA games that go into long period of development anymore. Eventually you just get tired of waiting and move on, especially if you've sunk a number of hours into the game before it finally gets out of EA.

Its’ just the opposite for me, I’ve been waiting for so long and now that it’s finally here I’m super excited to actually be able to play for real at last. I’m going to sink a lot of hours into this game.

So wait will characters from unstable carry over to stable or will they be wiped?

Unknown. All we know is a character wipe is coming with 1.0, and I haven't seen any Chucklefish folks answer anywhere. Supernorn does post here, maybe he can give us an answer.

I'm not playing Unstable any more than I need to to test the waters, I figure it's only a week and change at this point after years of waiting. I'm not even upset if my giant builds are lost (though I have backed them up), I'm always happy to improve them.

There is no chance of this still coming to Vita, is it? I already have it on Steam, but I really enjoyed Terraria on the intimacy of my Vita.

I wonder if it would even run, Starbound has a lot more going on than Terraria did.

Here's the latest on handheld ports from the most recent AMA:
Q: any plans for handheld platforms? i would love to be able to take this game with me everywhere i go!

A: it's something we'll be examining after console ports. The game has so much going on under the hood that I'm not sure how handheld consoles would manage it from a RAM perspective. The 3DS has so little RAM :(

Does this have a pretty solid tutorial these days? I remember firing this up when the earliest builds were released and just being overwhelmed even as a veteran Terreria player.
