Starbound Beta Thread - Begins December 4th!

So far I think my biggest gripe about the game is that digging isn't fun. I'm not sure what to pinpoint exactly, but when you get to the lower depths, even with a diamond pickaxe, it takes a long time to go through some of the stones. Sand and dirt is fun because you can just do one poke and explore what you want. I wish there were some holdover potions from Terraria, like being able to see ore around you, etc. After going through a lot of planets, there doesn't seem to be enough cool secret dungeons underground or things to see like in Terraria. Digging is pretty much finding ores and that's it.

That's what bugs me the most about the character wipe: I don't really want to go through all that digging again to progress.

From the sound of things it seems like they are trying to make the further you go down more rewarding, hopefully that means more interesting places and loot, besides just more ore.

Sad about the wipe but not upset since I knew it could happen at any time during this phase of the beta. I guess I'll just wait until whenever the next update hits to play again.

Awww a character wipe, but I just found a sweet cape =(

Just wondering, even though I'm sure it's been gone over, our starting planets right now won't reset at all or will we get new ones?

Actually, if the planets are assigned when you make your character, and characters go bye bye, then I suppose you won't see the same one.

That being said, it would be really cool if through all the wipes, it kept everything you are building in the beta, so you might have the chance of finding one of your old structures.

Since there's a tech and sci-fi gear, have the devs said anything about high-tech digging gear like laser drills or something like that.

And I hope we eventually make proper fuel for our ship. Coal and wood are fine for now, but those materials are not space ship fuel

Will that work? I would assume everything would get wiped. I forgot my SP though, could just write down another planets coordinates though and store it there.

I didn't even think about storing stuff on a planet to try to keep it through wipes. Wonder if that'll work.

During one of the streams, the devs mentioned that they'd always be warning us when the expect a wipe to be coming, that way we can take measures to protect our precious things.

If a character wipe is coming: Move all your stuff to a planet (SP preferably). Your character (and ship) will be gone, but as long as you saved all your things, the only real drawback to a wipe is that you have to redo quests. If you already have good gear, the quests will be fairly easy to breeze through.

If a universe wipe is coming: Move everything you have to your ship. The only drawback to this is you lose your precious structures/build projects.

Not this wipe, its only a character wipe, not a universe wipe. As a precaution, write down the coordinates to the planet you hid your loot on, in case you do start on a different planet, all you would need to do is just gather enough fuel and warp to the correct planet.

just find a random planet and store everything you want in a chest then leave chest on the planet
char wipe only affects characters
good thing too i was bout to enter the beta sector =(

It's worth a shot I guess. Nothing to lose since we probably already will lose everything.

Do I have to remember the co-ordinates of my planet or will it be the same one when I teleport down after the wipe?

someone mod the drills into Gurren Laggan shit if we get them
hell i fully expect gundams at some point in this game via mods

The devs didnt mention, but I think it would be safer to not only remember the coordinates, but to make sure you drop your loot off on a fairly low level planet, if in case you do have to travel to the planet, you don't want to actually die when you get there.

Link to a clarification saying this? Because, seriously. It makes no sense to wipe characters but not universe when the changes affect... universe and not characters.

No idea about the high tech digging gear, that would be awesome though.

As for the second, you can find
Uranium and Plutonium
later on.

Your character will be gone. All new characters begin at a random forest threat level 1 planet. You will need to remember your coordinates.

Though, the more I think about this, the more it sounds like it's going to be a total wipe, not just a character wipe. They're doing major rebalancing of the game, including changing how leveling works with the worlds. This is not something where they can take advantage of the fact that planets you've been to can be kept as they were, while planets you go to in the future will be the ones that are updated. They're completely changing universe progression.

Store your things on a single player world if you want, but DO NOT be surprised if all your shit is gone after the update. Expect it, and be pleasantly surprised if you're able to keep stuff. They told us this would probably happen.

The GAF server has officially made it to space and landed on a unknown meteoroid!!! I finished the staircase to space. What are you waiting for? Go kill some enemies on the unknown meteoroid in space. lol P.S. Watch out for falling enemies!

Whoever originally started the staircase please let me know so credit can be given. All the purple dirt blocks are the blocks that I placed. I spent several hours finishing the staircase. I'll be replacing my "CHARLIE" name from the staircase with NeoGAF related stuff shortly. Enjoy it before the server wipes!

I think it's being far more likely that he's being imprecise than extra-precise. After all, the changes on character side are just obsoleted gear (worse case, it gets deleted and you're stuck somewhere naked and have to sneak your way to some coal) while the changes on universe side involve major changes to how worlds are treated.

Edit: Honestly, I'd also be surprised if current coordinates carry over. I suppose they could if system generation is isolated from world generation.

For this wipe should I move my stuff to SP or leave it on my planet that is on the MP GAF server?
If there's no universe wipe, it won't affect SP or the GAF server. I'd prefer the SP world so that I could access it whenever I wanted, if it's there. HaRyu may need time to do server type things after the update.
regardless of what happens im going Florian next update
humans are too boring
I like human, but I think I'll try something else too. There will probably be another wipe after this one anyway. Just need to decide what I'd go with.

Saw this on the Steam discussions, reposted from the Starbound forums. In response to all the ridiculous trolls:

Why Starbound is a blatant rip off of Terraria
1. They both have the letters "r" and "a" in their names. - KirasiN
2. They both are 2D.
3. They both have grass.
4. There are humans in both games and you have to be a human to play both games. - Angry Muffin
5. Terraria has fallen stars. Star is in the name of Starbound. Coincidence? I think not.
6. Terraria does have zombies whereas Starbound doesn't ! This is a trick to make us think it is not a ripoff! - Klemar
7. They both have rocks. - Creepwolf
8. They both have spears, guns, and swords. The only shields in Terraria are passive, which is to make us think it's not a ripoff. - The Demon Of Borders
9. In both games you can chop down trees with a chainsaw. - Star and Moon
10. Both games have fish. Starbound has more fish though, meaning it rips it off more then once! - The Demon Of Borders
11. HOW CAN THERE BE MORE THAN ONE COMPUTER GAME AND ONE 2D GAME IN THE ENTIRE WORLD! AND HOW DARE OTHER GAMES USE GRASS, ITS OUTRAGEOUS I TELL YOU! AND NO OTHER GAME IN HISTORY HAS HAD AN R IN ITS NAME BEFORE LIKE DOUBLEYOUTEEEFF! I SUGGEST WE FIND EVERY OTHER GAME OUT THERE THAT MATCHES THESE DESCRIPTIONS AND BURN 'EM, SMASH 'EM, STOP 'EM WHATEVER! THIS IS MAKING ME RAGE ON SO MANY LEVELS IT'S NOT EVEN FUNNY! ARGH SERIOUSLY LET'S SUE ALL GAMING COMPANIES FOR PLAGIARISM OR SOMETHING - Crazy Lady
12. Starbound will come out after Terraria. Coincidence?
13. The artist from Starbound even copied the artist from Terraria's name and life!
14. Have you ever seen Terraria and Starbound in the same room?
15. Both games ripped off another game! (Terraria=Minecraft). As if there wasn't enough scum and deceivery, now they're stealing stealing too!
16. They both ripped off Hello Kitty because of the cats. - Suika Ibuki who is awesome for his/her name
17. They both ripped off Super Mario with the jumping system.
18. Both games were made entirely by people from planet Earth.

19. They released at the SAME PRICEDFS!!FEF! $15? Try me!!!

I decided to go to one of the systems near the center, at alpha 16,9. The trees are made of ice, they drop no wood!

Do they at least drop ice?

Yes, the trees drop ice at least. I looks like if you go far enough, there are some normal trees, but I was annoyed still.

Worst has been rainbow wood. Collected a ton of it, can't use it as fuel! At least it is pretty.

Since I have no clue when this update is coming down, I took a picture of my man. Dr Zapper, you will be missed!

So it actually looks like we are losing everything with the wipe since.

The character is the center of the universe. I don't know how this works in MP but this means in SP its like deleting everything and starting over.

Managed to get to the "end" of the beta. No new ores and armor to go after.

Not really liking how easy/repetitive it is to get the next tier of gear when you unlock a new sector. Every armor tier requires the exact same mats, just different ore variants. I kinda wish it took a bit more work than a bit of pixels and 12-20-35 of a bar variant ( the later tiers in the beta don't even require pixels. Just the bars ).

It just makes it this boring and repetitive process to upgrade you armor. All you have to do to get the best tier of armor is to just walk along the surface of planets and search for the ore you need.

I hope this is due to the beta currently only covering the first 40% of the sectors. And the later parts of the armor tiers, that we can't access yet require a bit more effort to craft. Because wouldn't make a lot of sense if all we needed to craft some crazy high tech gear, was simply ore being smelted to a bar.

I'm also not really a fan of how moons and going up to meteorites in the atmosphere doesn't require some special space gear to survive on. Only enviromental Hazard in the game seems to be cold. But I think we can all agree that to go to the moon or in orbit around earth, we need more than just some warm clothes to survive.

So I hope that some things will be changed/added. To give the game a more "realistic" space and sci-fi feel.

What I'm really hoping is that they expand on monster drops for armor and weapon crafting. I mean, at the moment they only seem to drop steaks and leather (even birds!) when they could do so much more with it. Maybe even use boss drops for crafting rare weapons and armor.

Super easy with the leather armor, but they're going to nerf that and rebalance everything instead. At the moment it just takes a lot of time.

I wanted to rope down from the gaf space staircase but the ropes aren't long enough. I tried to rappel down it by jumping and shooting another rope but on my third rope shot I missed and died :(

I beat him by hitting him 4 times with a far too powerful weapon that only stabs while having a friend help distract him long enough for me to do the full swing animation.

I beat it by painstakingly pricking it with arrows several hundred times. :<

At least I had to good sense to summon it far far away from my home.

I really don't wanna lose my pulse jump out of everything.
Only tech I found in my 22 hours of play.

I was playing with my brother earlier, and we were in my world. He ran to the chest and looted the pulse jump schematic and wouldn't give it to me lol
