Starbound Beta Thread - Begins December 4th!

I know it's Beta, and I've been enjoying my time with Starbound so far, but the game just feels so empty to me, and it doesn't help that progressing to better stuff takes forever.

So glad I made a homebase in my single player game. Using it as a hub for all my chars now. As long as they don't wipe this base and it bazillion lockers/cabinets will hoard EVERYTHING

I'm so torn on whether to jump in and start or wait until the game is more fleshed out. I normally stay away from early access but I loved Terraria.

It's really fun, and mechanically pretty complete (for a beta).

- Gravity now varies from planet to planet

Wicked!

- You can now craft racial flags, to show you've been to a planet

Gotta claim those planets for Big Ape!

I've been building with a friend, and we just finished a third base in time for everything to be wiped. I'll be taking a break for Christmas so maybe I will come back later this patch or the next patch. :P It's been fun either way.

First base, with some decent decoration:

After universe reset, I think it was decided to have a base in beta sector, pretty simplistic (I don't have a full stitched image ready to hand). We had a short top dining level with a little garden capsule off to one side.

For a gamma base, we got more ambitious. This took FAR too long to make, but ended up looking pretty cool. The idea was to have a big glass tower that you can climb, and on leaving, drop all the way down into a pit of water. Please excuse the ugly artifacts due to parallax while stitching the image together.

The lighting continues to be one of the best parts about the game. The little touches like planet backgrounds are nice too.

*edit* Wow, looks like we finished JUST in time before the patch.

That update really screwed up a few things with my char, beyond just losing stuff.

Pretty much have to delete them since it doesn't help that my chars spawn inside dirt, and can't move off the world due to no fuel and the homeworlds are weird.

Oh well, time to find everything again. Which is fun in it's own way. Although I'm going to miss my gun...

SHIT.
We just beat the second boss and got the Robot Workbench... it was in one of our ships.
Oh well, such is Beta.

Just a tip for the future with regards to saving stuff:

You might want to keep the game from auto-updating in Steam. After the update was live, I was able to jump back into the game, go to my ship and basically take everything I really needed and store it on my character. Then after the update, it was all still there ready to be redeployed wherever.

I imagine once the update hits which removes character wipes, this will still be advantageous, unless ALL (planet, ship, etc.) wipes will be removed and even then, you never know.

i think they said the fix will require a full wipe of everything.

I'm so torn on whether to jump in and start or wait until the game is more fleshed out. I normally stay away from early access but I loved Terraria.

I decided after a few patches to wait it out. The game is really awesome, but when I see how much stuff is getting fixed/added on a weekly basis, it makes me realize I could play a much more complete game in a couple months. I bought Terraria on PSN to hold me over haha

I have to admit I'm very tempted to start this game up all the time though.

Even though its optional, I'm going with the full universe wipe again.

Lot more warning this time, everyone has until server maintenance (6pm) EST to recover anything they need off the server.

The teleporter change will make it much easier to put down roots. Now I can set up a huge storage complex for all my loot!

edit: Oh snap I'm a member now!

Okay, screw the warning, looks like I had to update, since the server was borked and wouldn't run without the update.

The universe was wiped, and looks like my ship was wiped. But my actual character (and all the gear he was wearing) is fine. Not a complete loss.

Anyway, server is back up.

EDIT: Also, word of warning, if you're NOT going to create a new character, be aware that while your ship may have been wiped, and your character is safe, you'll be dropped into the last planet you were orbiting.

In other words, if you were in Sector X, you'll be in Sector X.

Without fuel. Or supplies, just the crap on your back.

Luckily, I'm in Sector Beta (but geared up for Sector X)

If you're stuck on a bad planet, maybe the "port to home planet" option would help?

Ah nvm, I just put some fuel in my ship, and it looks like that all my sectors are unlocked too, so I guess you're not totally stranded. I guess the sectors themselves are tied directly to the character, not the ship.

With that being said, you still have to redo all the quests, and the ship itself is wiped, it appears.

I think the worst part about the wipe was losing my instruments. It's insane how much variety there is.

I don't know about you but did the new patch change monster behaviors?

Because I never had packs of 4 or 5 aggressive generated creatures gang rush me at once. Something they are implementing perhaps?

Edit: *Reads patch notes*

- Some new monster behaviours

This must be it.

- add acid rain, meteor showers, water collecting during storms and more
They weren't kidding. Happened on my starter planet. It's quite destructive. Not sure how rare it is, but it happened before I even got to crafting an anvil. You'll want to take precautions if you're building things you care about. Meteors chew through wood structures. Maybe bricks hold up better.

I don't know if it's working in this build of the game, but they've said that destructive events like that won't occur on your home planet to prevent just that kind of thing from happening.

If anyone happens to have destructive crap happen on their home planet (not just their starter planet), I'd bug report it.

Some monsters just don't die, like they flash as if they're gonna die but then they just flash forever. There's a monster grazing right now and it's been flashing for 10 minutes when it should be dying a horrible death instead.

Somehow my plant was wiped along with my ship, so while I have top tier armor, all the techs and some pretty decent weapons, I have very few pixels, no crafting materials and even less building supplies.

I think I'll hang out on the Multiplayer server exclusively for now, since setting up a homeworld seems kind of pointless with another wipe coming.

Building large glass structures would be horrible if meteor showers could happen, so yeah hopefully the home planet thing stops it. :P
The good part of it is that it doesn't destroy what it hits, just turns it back into blocks, so you can easily pick it back up. Would be problematic if you have chests that get hit though. And I found out stone bricks are no more effective than wood. Maybe metal..

So seems like you can warp to asteroid fields, and it seems kind of... broken. You fall faster than individual asteroids can load and the first field I went to, I didn't teleport to an asteroid so I ended up falling and dying from fall damage. Not sure what asteroid fields have to offer over individual planets.

I am a little concerned with them implementing mods this early in the phase. I'm not sure if they're just directly adapting the mod, or using the idea and creating their own implementation of it. I'm glad that they've made the game easily modable and open, I'd just kind of like to see more focus on the roadmap they've laid out for the beta.

According to this discussion at the official Starbound forums, even steel prison cell blocks can be destroyed by meteors.

It seems like they can plow through anything.

Well before the recent patch (Angry Koala), one could build a tower, and if it was high enough you could find asteroids, these contained things like Plutonium and Uranium which are far better fuel sources then what Coal you find on a planet.

So there are differences in what mineral deposits one can find compared to an asteroid over a planet.

Sorry for the double post.

Back to living in a hole under a hill then. Good, I feel safer in a bunker.

Patch is live!

Edit: Ships are wiped with the update. Player inventory is safe.

Oh Shit, I have my ship crammed with all of my best stuff!

I think when I get home I'll quick load up Steam in offline mode and hop into Starbound and place all of my crap in chests on my homeworld, and then let the game update. OR, I could just start over again from scratch, but I don't think I want to do that just yet, what with a character wipe coming up anyway sometime soon.

Maybe it's time I just put Starbound aside until the next character wipe happens. Play other games for the time being. Wait until a later more stable beta phase is reached.

Maybe I'll put it aside AFTER I visit a few worlds with varying gravity first, and see my first meteor shower....

There is no guarantee that will work. I lost all my stuff (including 54,000 pixels) from my ship and lost my home base too. All I have left is what my character was carrying. Thankfully I still have the diamond drill so getting things back up and running isn't too problematic.
