Starbound Beta Thread - Begins December 4th!

This game is really awful with updates. I think it downloaded 3 480mb patches today. They really need to get their stuff together. At this point I have to guess we are downloading the full .exe each time? Still runs poorly too.

1 Update and 1 Hotfix. Its not the full game you're downloading.

After the 1st update, the game ran worse, which is the reason why we got the hotfix.

If the game is running poorly on your end, make sure you report it.

I'm assuming you mean play only in SP then, since you'd be locked out of any MP servers. (Or vice versa, you update and host a server, most people wouldn't be able to get onto your server)

In any case, your Starbound game in Steam is set to DO NOT UPDATE AUTOMATICALLY, but it updated anyway?
Right, used to "DO NOT UPDATE AUTOMATICALLY" just meant "If you try to play a game and there's an update, you will then be forced to download the update before you can play anyway." And yeah, not interested in general MP servers for the most part. I'm partly interested from a Starbound perspective, but definitely interested from a general Steam perspective.

Starbound was one of the first where I noticed a popup that let you say something like "Download update" or "Play without updating", and I think I even made a thread on it, I was so happy. :P Now it's back to the old behavior.

Here, I found it. It seems to be my most recently created thread. http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=732706

My starting world has a mixture of a variety of rain and meteor showers. I beat the first boss so I can get out whenever I want. Just need to find a suitable planet to settle on.

Found 2 avian swords which allows me to plow through anything right now. Now to find copper to get my gear for the UFO battle even though I probably won't need it lol

Why is this updating again? It isnt gonna wipe my character again is it?

If you mean, the hotfix that was released about 4 hours ago, its to fix any performance issues/crashing that the original update that kicked in this morning caused.
And no, it wont wipe your character.

Anyone else get 5 molten cores for beating the ufo once.

Also get 5 processors for defeating the robot. I gather they want to make it so you can create multiple robot crafting tables and Metal-labs for your ship and home. It does have the bonus effect of making it easier to move friends through tiers without having to fight the bosses over and over.

I'm still kind of surprised there's no way to delete characters from the game. But anyway, super stoked to really get into it now.

There must be something going on in your end, I believe you didn't get the option either back in dec. I got a prompt for both the update and the hotfix, if I wanted to update or play without updating.

You can try this, to "force" steam to not update. Go to Settings/Downloads and under download restrictions, Limit auto-updating schedule and pick an hour you know your computer is off like 5am-6am. That way even if you try to manually update the game, it wont let you.

Anything new with the distress beacon in this patch? It doesn't seem to do anything when I activate it now, it just keeps spinning. I have completed that quest on previous runs before the wipe no problem.

That's odd, did you try picking it up and placing it somewhere else before activating it?

I did, but only a bit further on the same planet, on a hill. Thought my elaborate platforms were too intimidating for the visitors to land, but moving away from them still didn't help. Maybe I'll try again on another planet.

Made the mistake of going to beta sector underprepared :(

Monsters are killing me in 1-2 hits and I don't have enough pixels right now to upgrade the bits I that would currently help me the most.

I'm still scared to play in case they require another world wipe.

World wipes might still happen but character wipes aren't. So just keep everything on the ship and char and it's ok. Even if the planets get cleared out there shouldn't be much of an issue, you'll keep most of your stuff and just lose what you built on a planet if you built anything.

Back to the addiction...

Renting a small server and playing/building with friends is so good.

Thanks for the response, I know it -used- to work on my Steam and I'm pretty sure I haven't even opted into any betas. I'll double check the beta and download settings later.

Got about 10 hours played now and I'm confused as to what the goal is.

Got some decent armor and weapons, I've beat the first boss and I've amassed a good bit of metal and other stuff.

I now find myself wondering the galaxy, visiting planets and exploring, but mostly mining.

Is this pretty much it? I've seen mention of dungeons but haven't come across anything.

The main storyline stops after the Alpha sector, in the final release it will take you all the way to the end of the game.

There are 4 bosses last I checked. Look at what new items are available to craft.

The "dungeons" are essentially any large structure (or set of structures) you run into.

This can be anything from NPC bases, jails, temples, labs, even towns.

Also, we don't have the full game. The way they have it setup now, there's only the initial set of quests to get us started. Even the progression of the items that we can get/build, that's not even correct, since they've said they've only given us access to all this stuff so that we can test them out. Later on when they figure out the quest lines, they'll rearrange item progression.

Oh right, makes sense. Keep forgetting it's still an early beta.

Just felt like I was missing something considering some of the time i've seen some people log in the game.

Thanks

Still no luck, both Starbound and another game I set to do not update started updating as soon as I right clicked play game, when they said an update was required. Thanks anyway. Nothing in settings seems to explain it either. =(

My esteemed colleague, Doctor DiscoShark and I conducted a cursory of the Alpha Lambda Cet Majoris system at 1212, 0 (Alpha), otherwise known as the GAF system. For some reason, planets no longer have letter designation (such as a, b, c, etc.), so I'm just listing the biomes.

Majoris I is a gas planet, as is Majoris V.

Majoris II (Small forest) has an Avian Airship, left of spawn. The other planets in this orbit were unremarkable.

Majoris III (large arid) was home to TWO USMC bases. This seemed like a very interesting planet without any visible impact sites. Lots of acid at the surface level, but since it's arid we don't think it would rain much.

Majoris IV (large forest) was already marked with a GAF flag, but looked largely unexplored. Lots of strange, ruined libraries and two glitch villages. No signs of impact sites either. This would be a good homeworld. There were two asteroid fields within orbit of this planet, but at this point Discoshark retired for the evening and I didn't have the equipment needed to explore them.

Will have to check Majoris VI tomorrow, it appears to have a large ice planet and a small arid moon.

Man, having a character pre-wipe achieve full Impervium armor has absolutely killed my desire to do any of it again. I probably won't be returning until they add a significant amount of new content. As it stands; Beta or not, Starbound is super light when it comes to mechanics.

This seems to be crashing on the initial loading scree, mac version here, anybody has this problem?

Seems like I won't be back to this today, back to HeartStone..

Oh wow, I left the server's starting planet because it was very barren, but the one I found now had a lot of chests and a huge Glitch village. Looting time :p

did they change how coordinates work? i'm trying to get a gun and when i put in coords that people have shown have gun merchants, it doesn't take me to the same place.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UKuS0sYrUbg is what im trying to use. it's an old video.

There are three new universe seeds, based on what operating system the game (single player) or server (multiplayer) is on. (Windows, Mac, or Linux) I have found over on Reddit they are now marking coordinate posts with the OS so you can use that to find some nice planets.

It's still quite light on content. Unless I'm wrong there is basically no quests after you make the distress beacon. I made it past the second boss again. I think the only differences so far are they added codex into the game. I don't remember finding some before.

It still randomly start to stutter. I wish they would start optimizing it soon. I mean, the way the game looks it shouldn't run so poorly on many machines.

Another day another 500mb patches. I think they are going to break the record set by Dungeon Defenders.

cotdam. at least 60 inferior brains later I finally got myself a superior brain. They really need to increase the drop rate or add a x inferior brains -> superior brain schematic deal.

Same. I just don't feel any motivation to farm those items again. I'll probably start playing again when the game reaches phase 2 of beta.

Drop rates feel way off right now, the weapons I craft have been far and away the best I've come across. Would be nice to see some more rare drops, had to use turrets to kill the fourth boss cause my weapons and armor weren't good enough and nothing better dropped.

I found the dragon to be crazy easy. I've had 2h gun that does 57dps and just sat under him and shot him to death, didn't take a single hit of damage from him.

Ore deposits are crazy high too, well except for coal which is still low in supply but more than enough to travel at will, I have hundreds of everything and I've never ventured down below the initial topsoil really. All the planets have had structures so far, though lots of repeats and I haven't run across a number of structures though, namely air ships. But I've found 3 prisons, several Apex facilities, two of them being those crazy electric mazes for nice tech, yay Butterfly thing, a couple towns and Avian temples.

Since I'm flush with crazy amounts of ores and other resources I guess I'll build a new home base with a mega farm and what not.
