StarCraft: Ghost for GameCube cancelled

Not really much of a surprise, at this point.

Starcraft: Ghost not beaming onto GameCube
Blizzard confirms the Warcraft maker's first console game won't be released for Nintendo's current-gen console.

When it showed off Starcraft: Ghost to the crowd at Blizzcon last weekend, Blizzard Entertainment did not mention any specific platform the game was being released for. Many assumed that was because those attending the event were familiar with the long story behind the publisher's first foray into the console market. Announced in 2002, Starcraft: Ghost has seen its fair share of woes, with its original developer, Nihilistic Software (Vampire: The Masquerade - Redemption ), being replaced by Swingin' Ape (Metal Arms: Glitch in the System) in the summer of 2004 for undisclosed reasons.

Despite switching developers, Starcraft: Ghost's consoles have always been consistent--until this week, anyway. Speaking to GameSpot, a Blizzard staffer confirmed that the game is now only being released for the Xbox and PlayStation 2, meaning the previously announced GameCube edition has been canceled. The staffer did not give a reason why it had been scrapped.

Luckily, a moderator on the forums of Battle.net, the official Starcraft and Warcraft Web site, did lay out the official motivation behind shelving Ghost for the GameCube. "In order to provide the game envisioned by the console team, a set and readily available online solution was needed," said the moderator. "Unfortunately the GameCube has no online service and since so much work is going in to the online portion, it would be additional work to release only part of the intended game."

That said, the moderator was quick to point out that the cancellation was not due to Blizzard being biased against the Mario factory. "Nintendo systems certainly aren't something that we are against supporting," he said. "The GameCube and Revolution will still be considered for future products."

I wonder what the future projects will be.

Diablo 3 on PC, PS3, X360 and Revolution?

(StarCraft DS, Diablo 2 PSP)

thats what i was thinking , they started out on console and have made quite a few, how can you forget the lost vikings HOW!

Yeah, even though this game was looking shitty in recent screenshots, many seem to forget that screenshots aren't among the important aspects of quality gaming.. things such as gameplay and control certainly are, though. :lol But anyways, I was looking forward to picking this up for the Cube. Ah well.

At this point, release it for sure on the current gen. It was envisioned on the current gen and Blizzard isn't made of money. It will probably be good and then let them start envisioning StarCraft Ghost 2 from scratch with the power of the next gen systems in mind.

Well, since I won an Xbox 360 in the Pepsi contest, I want an Xbox360 version!!

Still, I just hope that the Xbox version ships with compatibility for the X360. Otherwise, I'll just pick up the PS2 version and play it on my PS3.

No, no, she's right, it's not important.

For other consoles, cancelled games are bad things, but for Nintendo's, it's ok.

Keep the blinders straight and the procession forward.

Even Nintendo fans have sold or thrown out their Gamecubes at this point, so I don't see this news as coming as any sort of disappointment.

lol, a canned game isnt "okay" :lol, but why is it important? Are we supposed to make a thread about EVERY cancelled game for a console? GC was going to get the shaft anyway, whatever version it ended up with.

I'm disappointed, but not too suprised. GC is pretty much dead at this point so I can see why they canceled it. Am I the only one that thinks the "No Online" for GC is just an excuse third parties tell people as to why they cancel games? Either way, I really enjoyed Metal Arms, I hope this game gets the credit it deserves. No Cube version still sucks though.

When there are so few coming, esp high profile ones coming from Blizzard its important.

Hell losing Barbie Horse Breeding would be important at this point in the Cube Story.

If any Cube-only owners are really disappointed, buy a second console already :P Xbox and PS2 are both cheap now so you can finally play all those exclusives and non Cube multiplatform games that you have been calling shit for the last 3-4 years ;)

why do so many poeple on this board hate Nintendo fans and make fun of them?

well Online play was one of the bigger aspects of the game

Will soon be simply be StarCraft: Ghost cancelled

A lot of people thought Ghost would be cancelled as it wasn't turning out, but they bought Swingin Ape and dumped Nihilistic from creating it, if I remember right. Apparently, Blizzard decided to spend money to make a good game out of it instead of dropping the idea as a whole.

Well, considering how many times it showed up on "games coming out for GC" lists, I always assumed it was a key title for many of the N-hive.

Aside from being more irrational than "normal" fans that prefer Sony or MS (and I feel this can be objectively proven), neither a SonyPony nor an Xbot have brought down GAF because they felt their console of choice was being insulted too much.

So which side are you on? You cant stay in the middle :)

Yes you can, just think that both sides are full of shit and try to ignore them as best as you can.

It's better than saying "no one owns a GameCube, and the few people that do don't buy multiplatform games unless a Nintendo mascot is thrown in."

I find the lack of Bootsguy disturbing..
