Yeah Universe got a raw deal, so many fans disapointed that it wasn't more like SG1 and Atlantis. It was a really good show with a lot of potential, and one of the few shows that actually had the brains to deal with the trope of "friendzoned guy" in a mature and realistic way (he just gets over it and finds someone else).
Of course Universe wasn't like SG1 or Atlantis, if they were going to make another show like that I'd rather them have continued Atlantis. But it was where the franchise needed to go, there could only be so many "save the galaxy" plotlines before it started getting old, and Universe solved that problem by making each threat the characters faced small and local to them, but because of their isolated existence: just as impactful. Universe also came with the promise of finally finding a bit more about the wider world of Stargate and the Ancients, which had been kept suuuuuper vague through the 15 seasons of the first two shows. And the way they left it off was super promising as well (the idea of jumping forward in time due to the cryosleep)...man, could've been so good, I'm still pissed they didn't continue it.
Oh well, still my favorite sci-fi ever, so I guess I'll take that reboot now.
