Starhawk (Closed) Beta Testing thread of impressions and questions.

Mini-map really needs Poles (NEWS) on it so I can tell team mates which region of the map I'm fortifying.

It needs poles and it needs to be zoomed out a lot. It's really annoying having to hit select everytime you want to know what going on around you.


I really hope they implement a rudimentary clan system in the beta. So sick of playing with dumb as posts COD people.

Carry the enemy flag back to our base, nobody bothers retrieving our flag. I offer to drive out and take people with me to retrieve flag. No takers. Enemy swarms. I drop flag. Morons on my team allow it to be returned before I can respawn as is usual with "team" games, I need to be able to respond quicker so I can keep all the f*cking plates spinning.

If I could get bunched up with like minded players this experience would be less of a hassle.

Online gaming, reiterating that you can lead a horse to water; but you can't make it drink. And the horse will call you a n****r and/or f****t in the process. :|

You have to remember it's a beta, and besides being new a lot of players don't really care about the objectives. When you're on a team that does, that's great, but otherwise you're just making things frustrating by trying to carry the them on your back. But that's the great thing about Warhawk/Starhawk, there's lots to do besides chase the objectives. Practice weapons and vehicles, build an outpost, or just harness the other team with bombing runs.

Is there a way to view the score board / player list like in Warhawk? I need to see who is sitting around with their thumbs up their asses and quitting on my team.

Yeah, press start to bring up the menu with the settings and option to respawn, and above all that is a big white rectangle, you can click the rectangle to show scores mid-game.
 
Anyone else unable to connect to the Gaf server? It just hangs on the loading screen without putting me in the game.

Had that problem yesterday all evening. I just kept trying till it connected (after 1 minute of loading, just leave the game and try again). After that there was no problem. I see alot of rooms open with players so the problem can't be for all.

Going to jump into the GAF server naoo.

EDIT: Yeah, seems like i have also the connection problems again -_- '(still loading gaf room for 2 minutes).

I give up for now (tried it for like 10 times, different servers etc.). I guess it will work a little later like yesterday.

Edit2:Tried another room 15/16 ppl and it connected immediately. Maybe it has to do with the host.
 
Had a hectic weekend, only got to play a game or two (joined a gaf server, but host left shortly thereafter).

I just messed with the building aspect, going out to an unoccupied spot on the map were their are energy barrels, and setting up shop there is great. I made a corridor between the two sets of barrels, and then walled in one side using a mountain to help hide the beacon...it was brilliant fun to just see this huge base pop up, and then see my team use it as a resource. I had 2 hawk platforms, a bunker, a sniper tower, a large defense gun and a 'jeep' maker thingy-ma-bob.

I just want them to back the camera out a little while driving, or using a jet pack.

Im really digging the game, can't wait for them to roll out bigger maps too, and the 32 player rooms to test them out.

They should be implementing them later on, but I'm hearing stuff about how the Mech is the new Tank. God I hope not...

NeoGAF server is back up, if no one visits I'll shut it down. PS3 has been on for 36 straight hours now...

There is also a missing building on the wheel so that is probably the tank.

just got kicked out with server error and got "patch 1.0.8" changelog oO. now loading, server error again and got the 1.0.5 patch note oO. that's it for today. Some nice battles with frankman (why did you suicide with the hawk one time?), also Chryz good play with the jeep. Only way on this map (or everybody with jetpacks) to get the flag .

Today's 1.0.9 update for the Starhawk Private BETA was deployed durring the server maintenance at 4pm Central and contained the following changes:

All vehicle construction times are reduced to 3 seconds.
Moved flag position to the centers of each base in the small Space map.
Fixed bug that prevented CTF games from properly triggering the "Flags Revealed" state.
Fixed ladder exploit in small Space map.
Fixed pre-game CTF exploit.

Here are a few more details regarding the Starhawk Private BETA 1.0.9 Update:

Much Faster Vehicle Construction Times:
This change is intended to greatly increase the usage of Razorback 4x4s, JetPacks and Hawks as well as help players construct new vehicles without feeling compelled to build entire structures just for the default vehicle that it spawns. As a point of reference, the Hawk construction time used to be 30 seconds and now it is only 3 seconds. It should also be noted that, at least for now, all vehicles have the same 3 second construction time.

New Flag Position in Small Space Map:
Players had been using defensive building strategies to protect the flag that relied on the non-buildable railing just behind the flag base. This resulted in layouts that were awkward for troops to traverse. To fix this, we have moved the flags to the centers of each of the team's bases to help minimize awkward defensive layouts.

Bug Fix for "Flags Revealed" State in CTF:
After both flags have been in-play for 120 seconds, the flags are fully displayed on the map. Furthermore, returning you team's flag can be achieved by killing the flag carrier and simply touching your team's flag rather than having to camp by it until it is returned. There was a bug that sometimes resulted in this state not being triggered in CTF games.

Fixed Two Exploits:
Due to the great work of our Starhawk BETA Testers, we were able to get video of 2 unsavory exploits. Both of which are fixed in the 1.0.9 Update!

Didn't really noticed that the vehicles took so long to spawn.
Still no melee nerf ? just remove the charge. It's always a little dance who is in the right distance. Also i think the Assault rifle is pretty useless because of the regen health. Only in close combat it's maybe useful but then i use melee or the shotty/rockets.

You're crazy... Assault rifle is perfect for taking out Jeeps and warhawks lol

Its soo sad... Guy jumped out to grab the flag.. i was far away and started shooting the jeep... It blew up the second he jumped back into it. I estimate it took 7-10 seconds of Rifle fire from only me.

I'm gonna play some Warhawk to compare. There are some thigns I can appreciate that are changed in Starhawk, and then there are things that shouldn't have been changed.

I hope they're working on the Air Missile Lock time, it's getting a lot of attention on the forums.

its plenty fast, especially since you can get to anywhere on your area of the map... no spawn points!

if it was faster it would be impossible to take the flag due to this new anywhere spawn ability.... looks cool when you drop from the pod too.
 
Two people shooting can take out a razorback hella fast.

i don't mind the damage to razorbacks and hawks, because they don't regenerate but i can't really kill someone middistance even with short burst. so we both start running at each other for the melee/granate dance.
I also really like the assault rifle sound.

Sorry, that was a heavy dose of sarcasm. I meant weapons behavior and aiming as a ground troop.

It irks me to no end that they made the ground combat more bland shooting game style (I do not like aiming with a pad), but they're adding so many nerfs to the aircraft for morons.


yeah, first game i got into was with newbies so i thought it was easy to pickup shooting, then i got owned on some server, heavily, so not really :-).

So a bit more of assist seems like ok thing... and less melee.

but those are really things they can easily change.

whole experience was... fun. and i would even say hectic, with 32 ppl inside it will definitively be hectic, just like wowhawk...
 
Rocket launchers seem to behave a bit better too, meaning the rockets will track out and more ably follow a target rather than just taking a straight line and smack into an obstacle. That said, I'm not a fan of the two button operation to aquire a lock of the rocket launcher here.

Not sure what you're taking about here. There's an option in the settings for "hold to lock-on" that I checked early on, so I don't have any idea what the two button operation to lock-on is.

I'd like to see them ditch the run button, just put that all on the analogue thumb stick, and add a combat roll (sans the super awesome knife toss at the end) for getting the F out of the way of the Razorbacks.

Combat roll would be super sweet!

I was looking around the game and something clicked with me. You know what all the combat and the turrets remind me of?

Bioshock

yep, planting turrets and destroying them. Regenerating health. Decreasing MG accuracy. Rocket launcher appearance, it all reminds me a a much slower-paced Bioshock series.
 
The Acid Sea map could use some more RE barrels near the center of the map. Having two on either side isn't really ideal for fortifying the area. The Space map has much more abundant RE barrel locations which make it easier to get thing built without needing to farm from one location.

Still running into knuckleheads that build walls and no gates around the flag. Had to run around the fortress with the flag knifing dudes tonight until I have enough RE to build a sniper tower to get over the wall and score points. >:O

Then I reclaimed their stupid walls since I can't reclaim the sniper tower.

All items need to be reclaimable. I had some knuckle head last night drop random sentry guns in an area I previously had fortified and because this retard wonder put them willy nilly they perfectly occupied every good defensible position I would drop a supply bunker into. >:O

A tactic I've taken a shine to is not destroying enemy supply bunkers in an area I take over. It is one less item they can build and it poops out guns for me to use just fine. STARTROLLIN'! >:D
 
This is pretty fun, question though, how do i get a plane? I got a hawk, but it was just that robot mech thing, does that turn into a plane somehow?

Nice games last night, not on Neogaf server since I can't seem to find it.
Agree with barrels available in the middle of the Acid Sea map.
Got lots of mine kills lately, I always leave a mine near where you pick up mines and it always work hehehe.

TTOB - I dont' seem to recall any time where I couldn't reclaim a wall or something else.
 
How do I reclaim a building structure? I was running around my base last night but I never received a prompt for walls. Is it only structures that I have built?

So, how is this game turning out?

I loved Warhawk until I didn't have time to play for a while, then first 2 expansions came out, and when I came back I felt completely overwhelmed by everything.

This will probably happen again, but at the core of this game, are you able to just jump in and actually have fun? I usually don't dedicate myself to a MP game, but if there is a chance of it happening again, Starhawk would be the one.
 
Keep checking in! People leave during rotations... BTW if you have a mic I'm the one screaming like a banshee. :P

EDIT: Jesus, people building a fucking labyrinth around the flag when no more than 4 walls are EVER needed. JESUS..
