He experienced far worse back in 70s and 80s in Ural and Siberia. He worked on several constructions sites as overseer and had to endure bad housing, lack of water... even got arrested once, because somebody accused them for being western spies.

Fucking bullshit. There's ample documented written, photographic and video evidence of anti-gay hate crimes, and either ambivalence or encouragement from Russian police. As for the law? Again, fucking bullshit. What the fuck even is gay propaganda, and how can that law be in any way ok when it's aim to dehumanize gays is clear, and to associate homosexuality with pedophilia? Grenada, and I said I was there for 10 months, do you really think that was a vacation? 10 months in "rich 1st world accommodations"? I stayed in student-level housing, and I traveled to various parts of the island.

And I feel like I have to reiterate this very important point that you seem intent on glossing over, at no point during my stay did Grenada receive a direct infusion of over 50 billion US dollars. Which would have gone pretty damn far since a single US dollar is worth 2.67 Grenadian EC dollars.

So you studied abroad as a 1st worlder at a tiny island for 10 months. Yes, not trying to rattle the cage, but honestly that does sound like a vacation.

Again, have you ever been to Russia? I don't see how your experience is comparable to Sochi, but maybe that's just me.

Sure. I'm not defending the endemic corruption at every level of society. I just haven't seen anything coming out of Sochi that would be shamed by any third world country I've been to (or most of the rest of Russia).

Looks like you guys have a much different idea of what "rare" is than I do. :p Didn't mean to ruffle any feathers and was merely going by my own experience, the experiences of my black friends, etc. Basically my point was racism here is not comparible to how it is in Russia and some other parts of Europe and it kinda annoys me when people say "well it's just as bad in the US" because in the vast majority of places here it is not. I find that people who aren't from the US seem to think we are more racist than we actually are.

I apologize to anyone who's been a victim of racism (or any kind of discrimination) because even if it happens just once in your life, it's bound to stick with you. My intention definitely wasn't to downplay your own experience with racism.
