Staying positive: little things that get you through the day?

So to get straight to the point, things in my world have gone very wrong lately, and I'm under an immense amount of pressure to keep my life and my family from falling apart. I’m exhausted, frustrated, and am beginning to feel very depressed, but I’ve got too many people counting on me to be strong, and I know I can’t let myself sink into full on depression. I need help staying positive, and I think a good way to do that is to start living life in smaller chunks, setting more attainable milestones, and appreciating the small pleasures that life has to offer.

So what are some little things that help you get through your day? Do you read a web comic every morning? Do you have a regular time to sit down and have a cup of coffee? Do you jerk it every hour, on the hour? :) What helps you relax?

I’m willing to try anything, but what I don’t have a lot of is time and money. Any ideas?

Take a walk in the woods, listen to some music (not at the same time, mind you)...

Outside of that, I can't really think of much.

Usually what I do when I want to relax is turn on my computer, some music, turn out the light and jut lay down for a half hour.

1) Get a new avatar! One that isn't depressing!

2) Go exercise or something to work out frustration and keep your body engaged and let the mind rest.

3) Nothing will get better unless you make it get better. Sitting and hoping whatever is bothering you will suddenly go away on its own will only prolong your depression.

I take long showers in the morning and at night. I still get depressed most of the time, but it helps for a little while.

We are definetly being very proactive. We are seeing all speciallists and drawing a lot of support from family and friends. It's just that progress is slow and there is little light at the end of the tunnel. I just want to make sure my mood doesn't add to the problem, and I can't let certain people down.

And I'll look for a new avatar. :)

The best release I've ever found: exercise.... You wouldn't believe how good it makes you feel once you're done. I've heard (i'm no expert on the subject) not only does it make you feel like you accomplished something good for yourself, but it actually releases chemicals in your body that act as a type of anti-depressant, making you feel better for a short while. Joining a gym will 1) give you a place to exercise 2) Make you want to go exercise (because if you didn't you'd be wasting money) 3) Give you a place to go and get away 4) If you schedule a time to go a few times a week, it will give you more structure, keeping you busy from thinking about how you think your "life sucks".

For short term, running or taking walks are good.

I read that somewhere too, something about the different kinds of stress. When you accomplish something you get a dose of some sort of "good" stress. I notice it when I finish mowing the lawn sometimes.

And even i am moderately surprised
Drugs help just as much as exercise, and it cuts out that nasty sweating and shit....

Actually, exercise is the best. Saying that, my job is pretty stressful, and the times i feel the best is when i realise "oh fuck it, i'm going to quit in this next meeting..." once you seriously believe you'll do it, it makes the whole time fun!

Some of my "nice things":

- Starting the day with a trip to the gym. It IS very effective!
- Going home again, and spend a while making a really good breakfast. You know, putting effort into it. Just to give myself something nice. Good, home-made food is a must!
- Playing Animal Crossing a bit. Doing the usual chores, and running around to see if anything out of the ordinary is happening. Or doing a round of Donkey Konga.
- The insanely hot girl working in a nearby store. I mean... she's perfect.
- Good books. I'm always in the process of reading 2-4 books. Great literature does wonders for the mind. Right now, I'm reading one called "Dictionary Of The Khazars" by Milorad Pavic. One of the strangest, densest and most clever books I've ever read.
- Music... preferably something positive. I listen a lot to older jazz now.
- I also try to watch at least one good film a week. Lately, I've seen most of Charlie Chaplin's greatest films. Fantastic stuff :)
- Unexpected visits from a couple of parrots. I don't know why or where they come from, but two parrots have popped by a couple of times lately. They fool around on my veranda, eat my herbs, and try to get in. I live in cold western Norway, and you won't usually find parrots outside here at all, so this is very weird indeed! But I like it.
- Trying to be nice, creating a positive atmosphere. I find others do the same when I do it.

I don't have time to hit the gym every day, but I suppose I could start a morning run or something. God knows I could use some exersize.

That would be great if I worked at the GAP, but given that I work in the software industry I think that might not be such a good idea. :)

the turds of Optimus Prime
Get a mountain bike and go up a hill then go down it real fast shouting "WHEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!"
Get a drawing pad and just draw/doodle away.
Play Tempest 3000 on the NUON.
Learn to play an instrument.
Get a international band radio and on a night listen to radio stations from other countries.
Go dancing with your friends at the local clubs' 70s night.
Put on womens clothing and hang around in bars.

This is a pretty cool thread. I've recently gotten really bored of my routine and my music. I don't have a TV, so I've been getting seasons of TV shows to watch in the corner of my monitor while I'm working with Painter 9. The extra noise really helps and the shows are funny. I've been getting Penn & Teller's Bullshit, Aqua Teen Hunger Force, Monty Python's Flying Circus, and Mystery Science Theater 3000. I've also been buying lots of really cheap DVDs, like old B horror films. I've been a lot more productive and I've enjoyed painting a lot more. Sometimes I'll head outside and just run a few blocks, too. They're right about the exercise thing.

I usually just try to have fun however I can. At work, it usually means getting into arguments with customers (the other day I told some Naruto fan that Sakura was better than Sasuke and we bickered for an hour, it was great), or I move things around or just keep myself busy.

At home I sometimes play games, but usually talking with one or two of my friends does the trick to snap me out of a funk. This week is a rare exception, as I've been in a pretty pissy mood, but that's not their fault imo.

Feel good about the fact that you're actually solving your problems and doing something instead of avioding them with work, booze, or self-pleasuring. Relax, sit back and have a drink and think about how you're on the right track for long run success.

Edit:Actually, I grind the hell out of my teeth at night. It might work for you.

I prefer the sugar-free Red Bull. And on the rare occassion that I find it, a good ol' can of Whoop Ass.

Heh, you guys make it sound like the world's problems can be solved with caffiene. I was hoping for some ideas of activities that might be theraputic, rather just snorting pixie sticks and shotgunning cans of Mountain Dew. :)

I am probably in the same boat...

1 year old, beautiful, baby girl... 3 year marriage that has been rough to say the least... two strong headed people... work sucks to say the least (computer, phone support)... I haven't been playing basketball (so I feel like shit)...

Life is tough... you just have to try laughing a lot during the day. The wife and I had to say "that's it, no more BS, this bad attitude has to stop"

You def. need personal time... if it is playing a game or playing sports or working out...

I wasn't suggesting that you drink energy drinks to solve your problems. I was just pointing out that my energy drinks are better.

Anyways, the other people are right when they say exercising/working out really helps.

Look at all the people who are worse off than you, and try to appreciate the good things in your life. Family, health, all the stuff that money can't buy. Listen to music that inspires you - I find that classical pieces calm me down significantly when I'm wound up tight. Close your eyes, lie down somewhere and just let the notes wash over you for an hour.

Do something nice for someone you care about. It doesn't have to be huge, just unexpected.

Find pleasure in your job, if you can. Like this little fella.

goddamit, Griese!
the only thing that gets me through weekdays(besides reading OT all day) is the fact that once I get home I don't have to be back here for 16 hours. Or in the case of today, about 60 hours.

that, and alcohol.

These are things that works for me. They sound really weird, but they work. For me.

1.) Go outside, take a walk... but don't look at people and don't go to crowded areas... but don't go to woodsy areas where you can brood either. Just maybe take a stroll in a park. Think about trees and how their growth and construction is utterly amazing. Think about the wind and how the wind makes a tree sway. Visualize the movement of the wind.

2.) Tinker with something you have not dealt with for a long time. For example, I used to play the violin. I'd dig that out and play a few songs. If you don't have a hobby like that, then just take some Legos and start building. Or take toys and put them in weird ass positions.

3.) Dig out a photo album. Graduation. Weddings. Parties. Memories.

4.) Play with a child. They have an infinite amount of energy that will rub off on you. but.. uh... avoid those really spoiled/bratty ones. They suck.

5.) Blast poppish music that you enjoy and dance around your room. Dance in the most foolish positions or whatever the fuck. It doesn't matter. Remember, nobody can see you.

6.) Long & warm shower.

Good luck...

Getting all nostalgic is the last thing I need when I'm feeling depressed...

I carry a few pictures of my daughter and when I feel down (as I often do being in sales) I look at her picture.

I realize this only helps people with children but it's what gets me through the day.

I have pictures of both my daughter and my son plastered all over my cubical. That's actually my daughter in my avatar. She's 3 now, and that picture was taken a year ago on my son's birthdate.
