Hmmm, I think I may just buy whichever game I choose straight from the Steam store and try my hand at key trading sometime when I have a little more money to spare. I know you guys are saying that it's pretty foolproof, but it's making me stressed just thinking about the process! Or maybe I'll buy the keys throught the market. Ahhhh I don't know! I know you guys are saying that it's pretty foolproof, but it's making me stressed just thinking about the process! Thanks for all the advice though! I've never really hung around SteamGAF before, but you guys are alright.

Oh yeah, and what do you guys do with Steam trading cards? Just sell em? Or try to get the whole set?

if you want to avoid all the key trading stuff check out the buy/sell/trade thread and just look for one of the steam traders there. They are trustworthy and generally only add a small profit margin, so you'll be saving trouble and money.

Edit: Steam trading cards are good to boost your steam wallet in preparation for a sale, so I always sell them... unless I'm feeling crazy then I craft a worthless badge and stare at my 20% off pixeljunk coupons

The former, mostly, the exception being that if I'm looking to max out a cheap badge and the game in question still has drops to offer, I'll use those up first before buying the rest of the cards from the market.

Unless you really want to craft that badge (some badges are really cool) or level up. then I suggest sell it.

I personally got a Witcher 2 Foil Badge so I'm happy.

As long as you double check the trade contents and watch out for possible region locks (game-specific, just ask here) really nothing can go wrong with buying keys from the market, and it'll still be quite a bit cheaper than from the store.

Sell that shit unless I really like the game.

Been idling for most of the weekend while playing some Diablo III.

Finally got up enough Steam wallet funds to buy Shadowgate as soon as it's available.

So I'd just try to find someone in that thread willing to trade keys for whichever game I want? That sounds way easier than using those 3rd party sites.

It depends on a lot of factors, really. Generally the process for me goes:


  1. Do I enjoy the game?
  2. Does it have a visually appealing badge?
  3. Does this game have cards that sell for a relatively high price? More importantly, are they anime cards? (Those sell for a lot)
  4. If I like the game and it has cards that sell for a high price, is it likely to get bundled, allowing me to buy cheaper cards in the future?
  5. How much are the backgrounds and emotes going for? Are they selling high enough for me to take a shot at getting drops via a badge? Are they anime backgrounds? (Once again, they tend to sell for a good bit of money)

If I want to craft a badge, and the drops aren't worth that much, I've decided to wait for a sale event to see if Valve has another metagame where crafting badges gives you special card drops. If the drops are selling for a high price, i.e. Trails in the Sky backgrounds, and I want to craft the badge, I'll craft the badge for money.

Definitely sell. Since Steam Trading Cards came out, I've made $377.56 selling all of my trading cards. It's almost like a rebate system where you get money back in your Steam wallet.

So something weird just happened. I'm checking my CSGO inventory ingame and suddenly I get a new CSGO card. It's been over a year since I got all the CSGO card drops.

Every $9 spent in-game earns you another drop, just like F2P games. DLC purchases also count as far as pay-to-play games in particular are concerned, although obviously this doesn't apply to CS:GO on the count of it having none.

I have 1500 games on Steam and I've never bought anything from the key trading market. I've only bought one game through a trader, and it was a gift for a friend (Deadpool, after it was removed from Steam). The Movies is the only thing that would make me use the key market if I had to.

I sell about 80-90% of what I get. If I REALLY LOVE the game, I try to get the badge. If not, I sell the cards and check to see if there are any emotes or backgrounds I want, and if so, buy those.

I sit on them until closer to a sale event that uses cards/crafting, then either sell or craft. For crafting, you normally get an emote, a background, and a coupon, but during events the coupon is replaced by event-specific rewards (usually a card, last sale had team points which lead to even more cards). For selling, I just assume that there'll be more demand for cards during an event (because there's better motivation to craft).

Just had my first ever CS:GO match with gaffers. Pretty fun but I realized something. Unlike Left4Dead2 - where every map is fun - in CS there were maps I liked and others I detested.
Obviously I sucked hard but Shadow, cHinzo and others helped. I thought maneil99 would be there, too. Wonder who that one guy with the funny voice is here on Gaf.

And here I thought my 7 € were of significance.... treat yourself to some great stuff jman, you deserve it! Far Cry 4 would be my pick.
You know, you should add an option to set up idlemaster so that one card every 100 cards gets automatically send to you. I'd use it. Use it for ES or iM or any future greatness.

I think I've made a little over $240, though I've put back about $60 in bought cards and keys!

I've found I've bought games with credit that I probably wouldn't have with real cash until they hit a bundle. It's very unlikely I would have bought Ghost Control Inc. with real cash at $7.49, but I have no problem paying credit for it. I'm not sure what that says about the current indie game bundle culture but I'm far more likely to take risks with steam card credit. It's a great game by the way!

Just a lot of games, really. I've completely idled 435 games so far, so that's on average of about $0.86 per game. There were a few crazy games I got cards for back in the beta days - for example I got almost $9 out of my Gun Monkeys card drops (after buying the game for $7.99). I've had probably a dozen or so foil cards drop, nothing too crazy though. And of course my market total includes cards I've sold from booster packs (of which I've probably also gotten about a dozen).

It really doesn't take much to make a lot of money on cards if you have over 2,200 games on Steam. :)

CS:GO Night was fun with GAF, although those hostage maps were really boring. Prefer playing the normal ones, but it was still a fun night. :d I gotta say. That Chawlie guy was pretty good and I'm impressed with the general skill of the guys who were playing tonight (altho some were of course more skilled and experienced than others). The ping was alright too. Better than those times we queue'd up for a casual match in lobby. Gotta work a bit more on my AWP. :D

Shame, for the full mod experience Episode 1 and 2 are required. Only have the base game so far.
The city especially looks much more realistic now. Very outstanding work.

Do you guys think that the Redux upgrade is worth it for both Metro 2033 and Last Light? It seems like there isn't much being improved upon in Last Light, not really sure if it's worth the $12.50.

Holy shit. I was about to play HL2 all the way through for the first time, so glad I saw this first. Anyone know how easy this is to install?

Dispenser's bots almost entirely automate the trading process and there are instructions on the trade listing pages, so it's quite easy to use.

Dota 2 keys are going away period. There is little reason to buy them at all anymore.
