How much do you think Sony will sell theirs for? Can it really be significantly cheaper and offer a comparable experience?

In this price bracket is $499 really that much cheaper than $599?

At $399 I'd begin to question the hardware in the device.

Anything below $299 and I doubt it would be any better than those Samsung Android phone VR headsets.
I just mean the actual pricepoint of 599 U.S. Dollars is poisoned for them.

If it comes with two Move controllers, a PS Camera, the headset and the box thingy it plugs into - it could very well be 400-500.

I just don't expect Sony VR to be worth much given how poor the PS4's hardware is. Magic interpolation can only go so far.

Can I sell my DK2 for 1000 dollars? I'll do that happily, lol.

It's literally the PS3 all over again.

Yeah that's what I think too, I am far more skeptical that they can pull off a real VR experience with the hardware they have. VR is a big investment, so I don't see why someone would go with PSVR if they had a choice.

I still see PSVR at least this gen just being the new Move for them. It'll have support, but will move easily ignored as well since it won't Have anything to really interest those on the fence.

People already waiting for another Sony hero moment heh

I wish my old hard drive hadn't crashed.

Back when PS3 launched, there were so many scalpers on Ebay that Ebay ended up changing policy requiring people to post their pictures with the PS3, yadda yadda yadda..

So, I started archiving the worst of them. I had categories: PS3s with Half Naked women, Piles of PS3s, SOB Story PS3s, Fund My Retirement PS3s, etc.

The hope is that PSVR will either officially or unofficially have PC support, which will make it the best VR option for us thrifty folks. So even if it's not given its full due on the PS4 it might have a long life on the PC

Does the Rift Ship from the EU to the EU, or do they ship it from America or somehwere else outside of EU? In case of the latter, that could add another 20% to the price.

Whichever headset brings Metal Gear AC!D 3 to the table will be the victor.

I don't suspect PSVR will be much cheaper, considering it comes with a processing box of some sort that generates enough heat to warrant a cooling fan. Whatever's in there can't be just a few cables and some magic sparks, which means additional markup for the end user. GearVR, a few lenses and some plastic housing, goes for $100 by itself. Once you start adding actual hardware, the price skyrockets.

I don't know if I see Sony being crazy enough to launch it above what the PS4 retails for, and it'll probably be the cheapest full-package VR set, but it's still gonna be a major investment.

The people that backed the rift got the better end of the deal.

I don't see it being less than $400. Hell it might be the same price all things considering. Maybe more considering what the hell is in that box.

It does come with the least features among the rest so I can safely see it being priced the lowest. How low is that though, one can only speculate for now!

Also iI hope Sony are aware if they price an accessory headset more than their console which it is used for would be the equivalent of shooting themselves.

PC support would be the one thing to help it out a lot. People will go a long way with cheaper, even if it's lower specs.

For you.

Depends on what kind of support you mean. Yeah, there won't be many AAA offerings that use it. Indie games though? There will be a crapload of support, since it's relatively easy to port the VR compability from the PC versions.

I'm glad I don't care about early VR and am more than willing to let others be lab rats for VR until it's at a more manageable price

The question is though will the PS4 but up to the task of performance for VR.

While $600 is expensive, I'm also not sure what a lot of people were expecting. I doubt Sony's solution will be significantly cheaper, either (dependent on how good their technology is and how much money they need to make off of each unit, of course).

Decent VR is going to be expensive for the next few years.

Gaf spent all of 2015 trying to convince us that VR would be mainstream in 2016. A $600 price tag just makes it ask the more obvious that isn't happening, so the dissonance is crippling.

It's kind of interesting that this seems to be the prevailing thought. I don't think VR needs to be at a mass-market price just yet to eventually be successful.

Considering the technology behind it, our price expectations are kind of weird. Like, we don't have these conversations about most television sets, which most of us probably spent around 600 dollars or more on. And TVs are technologically much simpler than a VR headset solution.

Not to defend Facebook, Rift, or even VR, though. If I would ever be interested in this stuff it would most likely be HTC/Valve's implementation.

HDtv went mainstream at the $300-$400 price point, and that was a purchase most households have no intention of replacing. Every attempt by the tv industry to convince the public they need to upgrade to fancier new tech beyond that has failed miserably.

Work 3 jobs so you can buy a headset and play a farming simulator.

The future.

So true.

Yup, if PSVR can be used on PC games I'll probably get one of those in the future (since Sony has some official presence here, unlike every other VR manufacturer)

well they're using some smoothing techniques as well as packing in an additional processor with the PSVR so they're trying to make it work. That said, most VR experiences have been pretty lo-fi so far so it's not as if there's some sort of crysis-like killer app that is pushing VR hardware as is

I just don't imagine there's a whole lot of headroom when porting from PC to add VR. It depends on the game though. Like isn't ARK, and those 2 new Crytek VR games supposed to be on PSVR? I mean ARK barely runs on high end PC's. I'd like to see what happens, it would be cool if they made it work somehow.

I like the idea of VR but I'm not sold yet on it being the future of gaming. I don't think I would want to spend a lot of time with a headset strapped to my head. I don't plan on being an early adopter for sure. I'll wait and see.

People also say (said) mobile is the future of gaming. All that means is that it's where a lot of money will be made. Normal games will continue to exist.

Are the people who are surprised at this price surprised at the price of something like high end GSync monitors like the ROG Swift or whatever? VR devices are basically high end monitors.

That's a similar price I'd be looking at if I wanted a premium monitor. I actually think I paid $500 AUD for my Acer G24 back in 2008.

Which is the bigger point of why it won't be mainstream. *Maybe* a device that's $600 complete could be competitive. Most people aren't going to buy $2k in tech for VR. Not now, not ever.

The return of the arcade? Maybe.

This is the ground floor. The tech will get cheaper.
