Steam now requires age verification in the UK for mature game pages

Or is it just one of Phil's balls in my throat?
Steam is rolling out the requirement for all users in the UK to verify their age in order to access store pages for games with mature content.

The restriction seemingly went into effect on Friday, after social media users spotted reference to the requirement on Steam's FAQ.

Thankfully, the process to verify your age is straightforward: UK users need only to add a credit card to their account, and those who already have one registered will face no restrictions.

The age verification requirement comes ahead of the enforcement of a new online safety act in the UK, which makes online platforms responsible for their users' safety.

Platforms will be required to prevent children from accessing harmful and age-inappropriate content and provide parents and children with "clear and accessible ways" to report problems.

Other gaming platforms, such as Xbox and Discord, began encouraging users to verify their age in order to access certain content earlier this year.

Starting early next year, age verification will be required for players in the UK to retain full access to social features on Xbox, including voice and text communication, and game invites.

"As this age verification process rolls out across the UK, we'll continue to evaluate how we can keep players around the world safe and learn from the UK process," Xbox said. "We expect to roll out age verification processes to more regions in the future."

I still have to verify my age on Steam multiple times a week even though my Steam account is old enough to buy mature games, let alone me.

If I had to enter in my ID or whatever to stop this pop up from happening ever again I would do it lol.

What does this achieve exactly? Why does the government need to know that I want to purchase Big Titty Housewife 4? None of their business.

Under the UK Online Safety Act, Valve is required to verify that you are 18 or older before accessing mature sexual content. If you wish to do so, please add a valid UK credit card to your account and afterwards update the Mature Content Preferences.

Add a credit card to this account

Well, if you're logged into your account and have a credit card attached, it shouldn't be an issue. But if you try to access a store page on a web browser you'd have to log in to your Steam account just to see it.

Important to note that government-imposed age verification for mature games is prohibited by the First Amendment in the United States.

Can anyone make the case that the UK has gotten better since they stopped being a true monarchy? You guys gotta at least consider going back, the voting thing doesn't seem to be working out anywhere, and at least there you've still got an option.

I think the Brits will be seeking asylum in Afghanistan by 2030.

This is why I specifically said in another thread that if your account was at least 15 years old somewhere you should be exempted from this nonsense because even if you had your account created for you when you where 5 (ignoring the fact that doing that would be weird and most places require you to be 13 to create an account) by the time this law when up you would obviously be over 18.

that freaking sucks, any other adult here that never have a credit card in their life because they never have to?

I'm not gonna create a credit card just to play my damn games

If it's just adding a credit card, it's nothing. If it's some ID bullshit, that's insane.
It's not as bad, but I wouldn't say it's nothing. You're still giving away your vulnerable data and your cc data may be stolen if Steam gets hacked. It is possible to remain 'anonymous' on Steam if you rely on gift cards or quick money transfers (available in select markets).

Given that I had to show a Government ID to buy a beer at Disney World in my thirties and my wife was refused as she didn't have hers, I am not buying that the US is a libertarian utopia.

I can view 18 rated games like CoD and Borderlands 4 etc but an anime pair of titties I'm fuck outta luck...

That's not unusual practice, lots of businesses require IDs to verify your age if you don't very obviously look older.

Well I don't use credit cards so this means my Steam Deck is going to become a brick?

The age thing is more to do with mapping citizens online activity than it is with actually looking for age verification. The age part of this process is the Trojan horse.

Given the amount of civil unrest in the UK right now they are clearly trying to get ontop of things before actual chaos kicks into full effect. Looking at what's happening over at Indonesia right now. Clearly those in control at UK don't want same things happening when the next big currency print happens OR starts showing effect on those folks already struggling to cover costs of living and needing to go into debt to cover energy and food costs.
