[The Verge] Microsoft starts rolling out Xbox age verification in the UK

In this century's "Choose your dystopian overlord" we have: corporate in America, bureaucracy in Europe and both in Asia.

Just kidding: you can't choose.

I laugh at people having a pop at the UK, when I was on holidays in Florida, I had to prove my age to have a drink of beer and also prove my age to play bloody Pool in Calfornina and I'm in my 40's for crying out loud
Also, thanks to the USA age ratings in video games after all the nonsense with Night Trap. I remember having to prove my age in Virgin Megastore to buy Draclua Unleased on Mega-CD thanks to UK then having a rating system LOL

I don't see the need for this mind as all consoles have age verification on them and have done for years. Which is why I never had time for the people who cry when their child builds up a huge bill on the consoles or when Keith 'I like to bum young boys' Vaz would bring up GTA 5 in the House.

Parents can happly stop their kids playing games they are not meant to on consoles, very easily these days. Not that any of this is going to make any difference

This would only affect F2P accounts right? Paid accounts would already have card details.
No, that isn't how this works. This law is extensive; you have to keep records and have a plan in place and describe how you will protect children. It's a full on red tape legal department law that a simple credit card check isn't going to satisfy.

Mod sites are going to be crushed by this.

Understood, but it's a bit odd aa a credit card is a permanent record that someone is over 18 whereas the photo ID's are removed after a few days and replaced by a marker that you've done it. It'd be far better to hold the permanent record on file so it could be checked in the future surely?

Just the usual mess of legalisation I guess.
