Stellaris |OT| Imperium Universalis

Grabbed a quick snap of the relevant game creation screen,

So basically you can set how many of the non-fallen empires reached ftl tech a little before you and most of the others did. Nice, I had not noticed that option before but I like it.

I think I'll go with no advanced starts.

I want to see how much of a difference Ethos + Traits had on each empires expansion when I first meet them. I know it will be difficult though as its as much down to luck on what's around you as what your build is.

When do reviews go up? Not that it matters since I already bought it but I'd like to hear opinions on it..

What's a fallen empire?
These are once-glorious empires that for unknown reasons have stagnated and often fallen to infighting or crippling apathy. That which once covered hundreds of systems have shrunk to a fraction, barely held on to by superior technology and what little remains of a once glorious fleet. Fallen Empires are isolationist and will look at newer species with disinterest or outright contempt. Diplomatic attempts are futile and they will most likely attack any unknown ships entering one of their remaining systems.
Stellaris Dev Diary #15 - Fallen Empires

What's a fallen empire?

They are a race of technology advanced aliens who had there golden age thousands of years ago and have long since slipped into decline and stagnation.

In game terms, they're AI empires who are incredibly powerful but also rather uninterested in what's going into the galaxy - assuming you don't piss them off, in which case they'll wreck you.

Yep and you can piss them off in ways that may not be direct conflict initially such as pursuing certain research they deem "unsafe" or "unholy", etc.

Anyone here making a bunch of races to be part of your game alongside your playable empire or will you be leaving it completely random?

I think I may sandbox a few in that I was planning on playing in different playthroughs and see how they do with the AI.

I haven't decided which of the 2 races I've thought of I want to play yet, so I'm going to make them both and the one that doesn't win will be my rival. I could make stupid species until the cows come home but I'll let the AI do that for my first run.

I was going to, but then decided just to let them accrue over time and playthroughs. If I play a race that's particularly memorable I'll leave them in the pool, or if I run across allies or enemies that are then I'll reconstruct them as a custom species and let them be out there to show up again in the future. I figure that's my best chance at forming long term rivalries or friendships across multiple playthroughs like how you might always befriend the Dutch in Civ or something. Maybe some race of fanatic purifiers will become my Ghandi after a couple encounters.

Watching the Paradox release stream right now. Around five hours left until release!
Had to change my plans for today a little. After waiting one and a half hour in the city office and had to wait an estimated one and a half hour more to get my new ID card, I said screw it, where I am going the ID card is useless anyway. So I just picked up my new glasses, grabbed some food and something to drink and headed home to watch the stream.

I think I might write up how my Empire manages in a journal form or something on here. It might be fun to share our race's conquests and defeats with others.

Watching Scott Manley play in his small ring game is looking like a nice way to start.

I must be particularly anal about stuff because he's not finishing scouting systems or developing resources and it's making me frustrated lol.

Yeah I've also been getting frustrated watching other peoples streams over the weekend. Move over amateur, let me take control and lead the empire to glory!

I'm going into this more or less blind. Only flipped through a few of Quill18 videos.
My first playthrough is gonna be one hell of time for my poor people.
Finishing up the last of my schoolwork and I'm free until Thursday, my body is ready!

I have read everything from 18:00 CEST to 20:00 CEST in this thread, so I just stay at work until I read here that it's unlocked haha

The 20:00 CEST time came from a conversion mistake. Paradox said 18:00 (CEST) and some people thought it was GMT.

Going in blind. I thought EU4 was decent.. but I absolutely adore CK2. I have sunk tons of hours into that game.

I used to really enjoy space 4x games but burned myself out on GC2. I tried GC3 but didn't feel much different than 2 tbh.

Im just wondering if it's because I'm only watching I notice things they don't, or if I'm just a lunatic who is convinced everyone who's been playing the game for a week is doing it wrong compared to me who's never played!

I tend to be more methodical and slow when playing games anyway so maybe that's why.

Received my key from Paradox.
Also in the email was the following sentence:

PLEASE NOTE: Stellaris will be released 6:00 PM CEST on Monday May 9th 2016. You may activate your Steam Key before then, however you'll not have access to the game till the time of release.

It's definitely easier to sit back and watch someone else play and I try to keep that in mind, but some of the lp's have been absolutely maddening.
I tried to watch Arumba's LP but I had to stop because I was nearly pulling my hair out.

Yep, my key has arrived from paradox as well. Confirmed 18:00 CEST, which means 17:00 in the UK right now as we are on British summer time. I think.

I hate time zones.

UK should be in in BST now, which is UTC+1, while CEST is UTC+2, so yes, 17h for you.

I've been following a couple of Quill videos, but I didn't see anything akin of Trade Ships and such to boost economy. Did he just not develop tech for it / forgot about it or it's just not in?

The way I've been looking at Fallen Empires is that they are the Stellaris equivalent of EU's France basically. They're nearby and if you're not doing something to piss them off or on stuff they don't want you on they're cool with you. If that's not the case though they'll come and slap you down.

Wow, I thought this was scheduled for later this year. Maybe I'll have time to try it later this month once I'm done with the new Uncharted.

This waiting for someone to push the red button is stupid. They have the game, they should launch that sucker as soon as it turns May 9th somewhere on earth! Sheesh!

There's is no trading mechanics like in EU.
Just a pretty basic 1on1 trading agreements system.

I'd imagine releasing on Monday like this works the best for their staff. They can prepare all today, hit the button and then have the remaining working week to sort out any big issues that require hot-fixes.

Want to support paradox directly while giving a big finger to steam..... so buy the game from Paradox which means steam doesn't get their 30% right?
