I've never played a game with mandatory ship customization.

Not sure what you mean with the second point?

I just feel that if you have set hull weights and interior systems, you limit the way the game can play with ship designs. Every ship has to follow the template and all you can play around with are weapons and defenses. I want to be able to have a race where their ships are basically kamikaze bombs, one that shoot parasites to take over other ships, or maybe a massive Homeworld Mothership that churns out other ships. But most of the time all the different races just have similar ships with different skins.

It's just my opinion though.

Yea I'm wondering this gonna guess fall this year (though summer would be nice) as really interested in this.

I'm guessing September/early October.
However, it could very well be early 2017 (after everything they have shown and promised I wouldn't be surprised one bit).

Interesting that they had to delay the “War, Peace, Influence and Claims” Dev Diary for this week due to "secret" reasons.

That's kind of a matter of having sufficiently interesting section/components, yeah? Take SotS. Lot of weird components and weapons there.

Sounds like mods will be necessary at some point.
Any hints on a release date/window?

@RikardAslund @StellarisGame You're still aiming for a 2016 release?

@bjaelke @StellarisGame I can't comment on the release date but I will give you a wink smiley ;-)

Is there a date for Hearts of Iron IV yet? Feels like that's going to come out first and I can't imagine Stellaris being less than a month or two after that. I think they've been out there saying they don't like putting things out too too early, so I think it'll be 2016 for sure, maybe just summer or early fall.

Only "2016".
Hence why I believe Stellaris won't be out soon.

There's no reason to believe it won't. what with the devs themselves saying they intentionally revealed it at a much later state than they normally would have because they didn't want a East vs. West repeat.
Unless you don't consider somewhere in 2016 to be 'soon' I guess.

I'm getting hearts of iron vibes for combat customization. It's more than just those three types of weapons. Gonna be more complicated than RPS. Yipeee.

I think this is the first time something has explicitly been mentioned as still being worked on, lol.

Anyway, it looks good. The interestingness of ship design is probably going to rest on component variety (as mentioned, stuff that falls outside of the basic "beam, driver, missile" archetype) and those combat computers. Sophisticated behaviors pls.

edit: Also, the way they describe the lasers/shields and drivers/armor relationships is interesting. Makes me think that there's definitely something more going on than rock paper scissors, like... shields prevent damage, period, until used up, while armor offers a flat reduction; lasers do little damage but pierce through or bypass armor extremely effectively, so they struggle against shields, and drivers are terrible at piercing through armor but are otherwise high-damage and as such will strip shields very quickly. And then you get missiles and point defense... no hard counters if true, very exciting.

New interview that goes a little more in depth on some of the things that have been discusses in some of the previous dev diaries:
http://explorminate.net/2016/01/25/stellaris-qa/

Question: So, let’s talk about the various “players” in Stellaris. So far, I have seen the numbers of 32 and 32+1 featured a lot. The game is being developed with MP in mind, but does that mean that you won’t be able to have 100 “players” in a single game?

Answer: We only guarantee that the game runs well with 32 human players. That number is completely arbitrary though – there is no such limitation in the engine code or anything like that – but we simply do not use more players in our quality assurance process. As for AI-controlled empires, there is no real limit apart from how many you can reasonably squeeze into the galaxy. We are still working on the default settings and getting that balance right.

it'd cool to experiment on pre space age humans while playing as some kind of reptilian aliens. I hope we'll be able to do some really messed up stuff to them.. like cutting of their limbs and sewing them back on or impregnating them with half alien babies.

I wonder if we'll be able to help aliens reach the space age by leaving some kind of monolith. I mean, I know we'll be able to uplift them by changing their dna or giving them tech, but that's not really the same.

I just want to campaign as Half-Life's Combine. I will conquer race after race, incorporating them into my hegemony as I go, until eventually losing to scrappy, pre-warp rabble somehow.

It will be glorious.

It'd be so cool to have the Imperium be kicking around as a Fallen Empire...

Or maybe the Eldar.

Or both!
Man, a random giant fallen empire would be cool. Imagine starting a game where half of the map is already taken by a Fallen Empire. The players could be the xenos, the abnormality that eat away from it until it totally collapses.

Also all players starting as parts of a big, weak empire and have them rebel, cecede or overtake it.

Smells like a new gametype :D

I need this game in my life.

Guys, we should have a GAF-game of Stellaris. Only rule is you can't play as humanity.

We already have a GAF Europa Universalis IV multiplayer group, I'd bet that we will also be playing Stellaris when it launced/after the first patch. You're welcome to join.

I love EU and will love Stellaris, no doubt, but I find MP too much of a commitment. It's like raiding in WoW all over again - hours and hours at a time! A shame really.

Is there a group for CK2? I never managed to put enough time into EU4 to understand it.

Stellaris Dev Diary #19 - Diplomacy & Trade
We’ve also added another vital diplomatic action to ensure that we can realistically model the complicated diplomatic interactions going on between advanced nations; the insult. Make sure to clearly express your feelings towards your enemy by insulting them, instantly lowering the opinion between your Empires greatly.

I missed this part from a recent interview:
PCI: Any ideas when we can expect the game?

HF: It’s going to be released sometime this year. When, I can’t really say. I can mention though that we’ve taken in some beta testers, so that might be an indication of how far along the process we are.

PCI: So you’re hitting the last 10% or something like that?

HF: We see the finishing line.

This game has some really amazing concept art

I feel like the guys/girls at Paradox are really outdoing themselves with this

looks like the most cookie-cutter generic sci-fi imaginable to me. im ok with that though. if the game is good and fun to play I'll pick it up.
