Anywaaaay....

It's INSANE that 10 years went by already WHAT THE FUCK MAN

What the fuck is happening with time?!

It speeds up as you get older. Or your perception of it does. It's a well known thing. Time will seem to go by faster and faster the older you get until you die. Have a nice day.

I was about 10 years old when he died. His death definitely shook me when I heard the news. I honestly didn't have that same feeling of shock again until Micheal Jackson died as well.

I'm gonna jab my thumb up it's ass, that'll really piss it off!

The public memorial service for Steve Irwin was exceedingly touching. It was broadcast live throughout Australia, the United States, the UK, Germany, and Asia, and was seen by over 300 million people. The Discovery channel basically preempted an entire day of programing dedicated to it. It was held at the Australia Zoo's 5,500-seat "Crocoseum" and had speeches by both celebrities and close family and friends.

This speech by Bindi was sweet and heartbreaking. I'm tearing up just watching these clips.

During the entire service they had his trademark white truck parked in the center and at the end his friends packed it up one last time and drove it off while his favorite song "True Blue" was played live by Australian music star John Williamson.

The whole ceremony is on YouTube if you want to watch it. I bought the DVD back when it came out because all proceeds went to his charity, Wildlife Warriors.

RIP, he was one of my all time favorite TV personalities and whether you watched for the animals or for him, he broadcasted appreciation for nature and conservation of our planet and its inhabitants on a regular basis to the masses. Something I feel is sorely lacking today.

The day he died, my friend called me to let me know he did. Pretty big bummer and the first time I cared about a celebrity passing. We were both 12 at the time and like a lot of us growing up, I think the reason why we loved him so much that he had as much enthusiasm as a kid when we watched him work with nature. There's no one who's been able to match him since.
When it comes to teaching the world about animals I prefer the Attenborough approach rather than the wrestling animals to the ground approach.
I will NEVER understand the love for this man's voice over work. Dude puts me to sleep every time. Certainly wasn't why Planet Earth ruled. I'd rather have Christian Slater.

Remember when Bill Maher went as Steve Irwin with a stingray stuck to him the next Halloween? So edgy!

Yeah that was horrible. For good Steve Irwin death humor, Norm Macdonald's appearance on The Daily Show was legendary. Only Norm could do that though.

I can't believe it's been ten years already. His is one of those celebrity deaths that has always felt like it was just a few years ago, don't know why. I loved his show and he seemed like such a good guy with a good heart. RIP.

I remember watching Crocodile Hunter epps like everyday that summer for some reason, routinely. Then summer ended and he died.

Childhood = done.

I think the think I can't believe is that no one has even TRIED to take his place. It just seems that when he died the amount of Nature shows on TV plummeted.

There was that guy Jeff Corwin or whatever his name was. His show was on for a while. He was a pretty likable and charismatic guy, but not like Irwin.

Steve was amazing. There's literally no one like him. Watching him for the first time was mesmerizing. He was just driving around in the wild, talking and then all of a sudden he spots something in a tree. "CRIKEY!" He veers the jeep over, hops out and then climbs the fucking tree...then hops down with his animal. "Isn't she gorgeous??"

I was 10 as well when Steve died. Similar to you, but the last feeling of shock I had was with Robin Williams.

Steve was truly one of a kind.

I was undergoing my studies in Australia when the news broke live.
Was sitting in class when one guy, viewing his computer, broke out that Irwin had died.
A lot of misplaced laughter in the class. Teacher and everyone took a few minutes out to check out the headlines.

I remember some Aussies (student friends) thinking it was a bit awkward that he was the ultimate diplomat/image for the country but I believe most appreciated his work.

I had the great pleasure of briefly meeting Steve Irwin and his daughter Bindi on Christmas Eve 2003, shortly after his son had been born.

My family had been stationed over at Kadena Air Base on Okinawa for several years and were gearing up to be moved back to the States in Summer 2004, so my parents wanted to use Winter Break as our last opportunity to make a trip over to Australia. We visited three different parts of the continent over the trip, but the first stop was near the Australia Zoo that the Irwin family runs.

Now Steve and Terri hadn't announced that they'd had another child yet publicly, so my family was kinda surprised when the bus driver who was taking us to the zoo mentioned that the Irwins had just had another kid and were keeping a low profile about it.

Strangely enough, when we got to the zoo, it turned out that they were in the process of opening up a new elephant exhibit and Steve himself was showing the new elephants to everyone there. We briefly got to see the tail-end of the presentation at the dome and then went our merry way and explored the zoo.

Eventually we came across this small little set of rides in a clearing at the zoo- stuff like a Merry Go Round and some other basic rides. So me and my sister head over to the Merry Go Round first, but all of a sudden my sister gets stolen away from me by a smaller little girl and the two of them ride on a different part of the ride together.

That little girl turned out to be none other than Bindi Irwin.

So for the following thirty minutes or so, Bindi and my sister play together on the various small rides in that clearing and having fun. Then all of a sudden, the zoo employees shout over to Bindi, "Oi, Bindi, look! It's your dad!"

Sure enough, here comes Steve Irwin riding on top of one of the elephants from earlier, all jovial and laughing like a little kid. Bindi turns to look at her dad for a second, shrugs and then goes back to playing with my sis. My dad and I, on the other hand, flip out and rush over to the side of Steve's elephant. I think I managed to get one photo, but the thing I remember most of all was this exchange between my dad and Mr. Irwin:

My Dad: We love your work!
Steve Irwin: (look down at us and smiles all big) So do I!

I'm never going to forget that experience. It really feels like one of those "Too Good to be True" stories, but it actually did happen. I'll always cherish that experience and feel awful that the man died so young.

RIP Steve Irwin.

Great anecdote. I can picture his face lighting up in response to your dad.

There are only a few celebrity deaths that have effected me and this was one of them. He was so alive, it seemed impossible that he could die. He was literally as vital a human being as you could find on television.

There was that guy Jeff Corwin or whatever his name was. His show was on for a while. He was a pretty likable and charismatic guy, but not like Irwin.

Jeff viewing was around plenty while Steve was around and he still is doing his thing.

I was reading through the thread just now where his death was first made public. Holy shit what a mistake. Vile humor in there. Gaf has improved quite a bit over the years.

Sucked. I mean the guy was always risking his life, but it's always incredibly sad when someone who is so passionate about something loses their lives early. =\

Just seeing the excitement in his face was the best part of any episode.

still too soon

Lol as offensive as that seemed I guess I saw it as a kind of an homage back then. Just think about how many douchebags actually went out for Halloween in that type of outfit. In a way it was more of a joke about people who need to have the edgiest costume possible at the given time than it was about his death. In terms of making fun of Irwin's death it was actually pretty innocent by South Park standards because all it's implying is that Irwin would be the type to immediately enjoy himself(go to a party) even in the afterlife.

They've been far more mean-spirited to others both dead and alive.
