The same thing didn't happen 10-20 years ago?

Did it? Probably. As much? Probably not. The reality however is that we live in a much more violent world than it was 10-20 years ago. It sounds cliche but you really could leave your door unlocked in many neighborhoods 'back in the day' that you can't now. More parents really did raise their kids and 'look out' for the neighborhood kids back in the day too. I know, I know, it sounds cliche... but it's true. And the deterioration of the family unit is one of the main things contributing to the rise in youth violence IMO.

DarienA, you're going to learn Problems are Problems are Problems.

Chances are, problems that exist today existed 20 years ago. Sure, the frequency and/or importance of such problems might be greater, but they were still there. What you're missing from this equation is problems that existed back then maybe no longer exist now or the frequency and/or importance may be significantly lower.

Life is problematic, yo.

Willco... did you forget that I'm already an old man?(34) ;), I've already learned this stuff. I didn't say these types of crimes didn't exist when I was growing up, what I said was the frequence has increased, and this has been proven through various statistics. We also know that the family unit in many cities IS less strong than it use to be. There ARE more single parent families, there ARE less after school activities, etc... all of these and more have contributed to many kids growing up today NOT having respect and doing things that a smaller # did back in the 70's, 80's.

Of course we've made progress in other areas... technology, medically, etc... but that doesn't change today's problems.... increased crime, increased poverty, etc.

I never understand muggers - usually they end up getting away with nothing or very little. If your going to do crime, think big payoff not stealing some womans purse with $5 dollars in.

Wow, 1st and 7th is right down in the Warehouse district. Thats probably a good reason why I catch a cab that late at night instead of the bus.
